The Kingdom of Fendesar nestled happily between two great mountain ranges was lovely, fertile, and relatively peaceful. There had been many great wars, but time and time again, the brave knights of the Kingdom defended their homeland with great honor. The King and Queen had been traveling when this story begins, so they will not be heard from at first [i.e. No one has volunteered to play them].

The Castle Windsmoore was an ancient estate composed of monolithic gray stones. The emerald vines of ivy etched up along the great walls, contrasting the man made structure with the essence of nature. The moat was filled with all sorts of nasty things, naturally. There was an old, twisted tree, almost as tall as the castle, so great a thing it was, with winding branches and shady leaves. It was mid spring, a time of hope, promise, and once again adventure! No longer confined to the walls of the castle, the people could venture outdoors more frequently.

Now, there was a young woman about 20 years of age. She was trotting down the road with a large tree limb in one hand (She called it a walking stick...) and a flowing robe of patchwork on her back. Her violet colored eyes darted around, drinking in her surroundings. Sunlight rained upon her form as she gazed up at the Castle Windsmoore.

"Well..." She said to herself, "Merle, it's time we got ourselves a JOB!" Merle strutted up as far as she could go before a Moat obscured her path.

"HELLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOO" she yelled, "Can someone lower the bridge! I'm here to ask for a job!!"

Merle waits several moments before she sees the sunlight glint off of the top of a polished silver helmet.

An armored guard on top of one of the castle walls overlooking the moat appears and gazes down at Merle. His gauntleted hand clenches the pike at his side and his weary eyes look Merle over as if searching for signs of a threat.

"The lord of the castle is away, friend!" The guard elevates his tone so as to be completely clear. "Be on your way!"

nearby, a large man was repairing the roof of an elderly couple's cottage. he looks over to see the young woman being roughly brushed off by the castle guards. he slides off the roof and slowly walks over, attempting to not appear menacing. he chuckles inwardly to himself. " kinda hard to not look menacing when you're the biggest man in the kingdom," he said quietly. when he reaches the woman, his warrior instincts take over and he quickly looks over the young woman. she's tiny, compared to him. a large falcon swoops down and lands on his shoulder as he addresses the young woman. "m'lady," he said in an uncharaceristically soft voice, " the lord and lady of the kingdom is away on a diplomatic trip. they should return in a few days. the guards won't let anyone in without them being present." with that, he turns to walk back toward his work.

Merle wrinkled her nose and reached into her robes, she pulled a small handful of powder out of a bag, then raised it to her nose and inhaled. Her vocal chords tingled, and then, she spoke (run on sentence).

"LISTEN MERE MORTALS!" This time as she spoke her voice resounded, five times louder than any human voice should sound. It was a booming, imposing force resonating up and down the castle walls. "I AM THE GREAT, THE POWERFUL MERLE LYNN. I HAVE DESCENDED FROM THE GREATEST LINE OF MAGICIANS AND SORCERERS EVER KNOWN ACROSS THE FARTHEST LANDS! YOU WILL HOLD AUDIENCE TO MY AMAZING ABILITIES... OR, I SHALL TURN YOU ALL INTO FROGS! I MAKE A POWERFUL ALLIE, BUT A FORMIDABLE ENEMY."

With that she coughed, reached into her bag, tossed some dust onto the water of the moat. The water began to boil violently. She waved her hand. "WHAT SAY YOU MEN?" A hint of a playful smile traced over her red lips, as if to indicate she was no threat or wicked person, she just wanted to be heard, and respected.

"Whats happening here, trooper?" Captain Volkmar approached and asked the guard who had attempted to turn the magician away.

"We may have a problem, sir." The guard said calmly as he pointed an armored finger down and at Merle. Both men listened to her booming declaration, but remained stalwort under threat of being frogged.

"Frogs, eh?" Luthor asked, keeping his steely gaze on Merle. "Lower the bridge, but raise it again once I'm out. I'll give our friend her audience if she so wishes." Luthor told the trooper before turning and leaving the castle wall.

Knowing better than to question the order of one of the king's knights, the guard made the signal to lower the bridge.

--------

Gears spuns, chains rattled and metal scraped and whined as the massive drawbridge on the face of the castle lowered and hit the ground with a loud thud. The iron gate behind the bridge then slowly rose, the three men it took to turn the wheel to lift the massive gate working tirelessly, stopping only when they were satisfied that Captain Volkmar had exited the building. As he crossed the bridge, he noted the boiling water and snarled. Accursed sorcery. The gate then came down behind him with an unforgiving crash as the men released the wheel. Once he was across the bridge they began working to raise it as well.

Luthor's armor shifted with his movements, his helmet was tucked under one arm and his war hammer was clenched in his other hand. The captain approached the the young woman and came to a stop roughly a sword's length away. He assessed her closely, never fully trusting one who favored magic over a strong arm and a weapon.

"Well met, stranger. I am Captain Luthor Volkmar of the Blade of Dawn. I am acting Overseer of this castle until the Lord and Lady return from their travels. State your business."

not wanting to be in the way, and not wanting his falcon to be noticed, draven whistled and a little bird landed on the roof he was working on. he looked at the bird and thought that the bird should go see what's going on. and as if the bird understood his thoughts,it flew to a tree near the strange woman and the knight. through the bird, draven could see and hear what's going on without being noticed.

Merle smiled, and coughed, throwing off the spell upon her voice. With a handful of magic dust tossed onto the moat the water ceased and calmed. "Sorry for the rather brash entrance. I just really don't like being brushed aside without a chance to demonstrate at least a fraction of my abilities. Merle Lynn is the name, granddaughter of the Infamous Bongo, a distant relation to the legendary Merlin of Arthur's court. I have traveled far and underwent countless perils to be humbly received as your court magician."

With this she whipped out a shabby looking piece of paper, "Can you read? Most can't, it's a shame. It's a proclamation looking for a new court magician, your own King sent this out. I heard about the untimely demise of your previous magician, Eugene the Unfortunate, even in my land. Bad thing to happen... turning one self into a pie... especially when the largest woman in town devoured him. Miserable, quite miserable..." Here she realized she had gotten onto a tangent.

"So what say you? I would be glad to hold a demonstration of my skills. Their entertainment will delight your lord and lady, I assure you. AND, I am quite clever with things, never hurts to have a crafty hand around to secure the castle."

"Alas, poor Eugene..." Luthor said thoughtfully. "On the eve of his last day of service, too. Such a shame." He then looked at Merle. "But, one never moved forward by looking back." He said, quickly shoving allsentiment aside. "If what you say is true, then I will gather the king's council here for you to display your skills. Know now, however, that you are being watched closely for ill intent. With word of the King and Queen being away, all manner of subversives think to seize the throne for their own. Wait here a moment, if you would." The captain instructed before turning back and heading into the castle once the bridge was lowered and the gate raised.

--------

It hadn't been long before Luthor returned, and when he did he brought with him a number of people from within the castle. The manner in which they all dressed and carried themselves suggested higher ranking officials with whom the King and Queen conferred regularly. Merle could even see a few more armored warriors, officers of the castle guard and men and women under Luthor's direct command, to be exact. Whether the Knight had them attend for the sake of judging if Merle was worthy of employment or if he simply wanted their presence to be felt, Merle could not say, however.

"Well, magician. Have at it." Luthor gestured for Merle to begin her display.

watching everything unfold from his tiny bird friend's eyes, and seeing that everything is in order, draven felt there was no need to use the bird for anything more. wit hthat, the bird flew off. draven pounded in the last of the spikes on the roof. "there," he said "that should fix the leak, sir." the old man offered draven two gold pieces for his work. "now you know i don't take money," he said. "but a slice of the pie and a warm meal would pay your debt." the old man shuffled inside of his tiny shack to tell his wife to prepare draven a plate of food. meanwhile, draven couldn't turn his gaze away from luthor and the strange young woman. "poor girl,"he thought,"surrounded by all those people just so they can see a magic trick." he chuckled as he ducked his head to enter the cottage.

Merle swallowed hard and rolled up her sleeves. "Well, here goes nothing." She pointed at a random guard and flicked her wrist. "Minucci Bebar Humus!" With that the guard's armor dissolved away, leaving him in his undergarments Merle breathed deep and extended her hand, the dissolved ruins of once sturdy metal all floated and gathered in the palm of her hand, as a pile of silver-colored sand. She smirked and as she flicked her hand the pile of silver sand vanished and she was now grasping a brilliant sword.

"A gift for the best warrior in the bunch" She said sticking it in the ground, "Now... for my next trick I will need... a not so lovely lass." Merle rubbed her chin and spotted a haggardly looking woman in the crowd. "Perfect!" Merle walked up to the woman and her husband, "So Sir, I see your wife leaves something to be desired, huh?" The husband nodded sadly, to which the wife smacked him on the back of the head, "MARCUS!" Merle chuckled then with a snap and the pulling out of an ancient scroll she began to read, "Jmeis, Iget, Mnuemonistra pita!" The light seemed to dance over the woman's features, a beaked nose was soon restructured into a smaller, more delicate nose. Her hairy eyebrows that looked like two mangy cats were suddenly perfectly groomed and nice. The woman's body transformed into the slender elegance of a young woman. The husband looked to everyone else, "We MUST have this magician amongst us!"

Merle was now breathing heavily, she was quite taxing herself with her A material, there were a few murmurs of "witch" in the crowd even though there seemed to be several cheers over the beauty-fication of the wife (the cheers seemed to be prominent from the men's side of things).

Merle looked to the village idiot, "And NOW" She said, "I will turn this man into a gentleman. Tuiw Gnemit pretzel!" What happened next was unexpected. There was a bolt of lightning out of no where, and instead of the village idiot there was a chicken, clucking away. "Or... I will just turn him into a chicken... great in times of famine... I guess... eat your friends? Oh boy... I will turn him back, I promise. I err... can I have a cup of water? Oh boy... you've gone and done it now Merle... turning villagers into Chickens."

Luthor couldn't help but chuckle when he witnessed Merle's big finale and, as he made way for the wandering chicken, he barked an order to an attendant to fetch that glass of water.

"Well I must say, the obvious aside, that was most impresive." He complimented. "Perhaps I should rethink my position. You certainly seem to have won the majority of the people over." He said, looking back at the others who spoke among themselves, still impressed by Merle's display.

"Come, we'll talk inside." The captain fianlly said after a few moments more. Without waiting to see if Merle was following, Luthor began walking back into the castle.

draven finished his meal and excused himself from the couple's cottage. "thank you for the wonderful meal, but i really have to run along. i have... things to tend to," he said to the elderly woman. with that, he bid his fare well to the couple and headed back to his home. walking inside, he sets his tools on a shelf next to the door. he motions for his falcon, which lands gracefully on his outstretched arm. he pulls a small cloth pouch out of his bag of tools and opens it. he then pulls a piece of meat from the pouch and gives it to the falcon. when the falcon flys off his arm, draven grabs a sword that was standing against a table and unsheaths it. "it's been nearly a year since i've been called to use this. ever since the last war, things have been handled diplomatically." a slight smile appears across his face. "though it never hurts to be prepared. am i right, tal?" as if replying to draven, the falcon spreads his great wings and squaks at him. draven nods at the falcon and goes out back to train his swordsmanship.

Merle had followed obediently. Wooziness had set in, she was trying too hard with her displays, but it would have to suffice. As they entered the castle Merle was astonished at just how many rows of suits of armor there were, it was quite the cliche decor! Her robes billowed out behind her a touch, her attire wasn't the most fancy nor the best, but it worked. "So this is Windsmoore? Incredible! So Captain Volkmar, do you think the chicken fellow will be alright? I need to work on a few bugs. I will have them all worked out before it really matters. These are peaceful times, which means magic can once more be used to Entertain and delight. It's important to keep people's spirits high. Labor is always abundant if one wishes to eat, and the elements are not always merciful. A few dazzling feats help keep morale up."

She felt like a vendor squawking on the street in an attempt to push some inferior produce, yet she conducted herself as confidently and professionally as possible.

"I ask not much in the way of wages, a place to sleep with some privacy to study scrolls, food, some scraps of clothing. Anything extra would depend on how much I can do the for the kingdom with my magic."

"What you ask is fair enough," Luthor assured Merle as they passed through the castle halls. "I'll see to it that you get what you need and are conpensated duely for your services. Seeing as how you're new to our kingdom, however, you will need a guide." He finally realized.

Pausing for a moment, Luthor thought to himself and then turned to one of the guards. "You there! Fetch trooper Draven and bring him here."

The soldier noded and immediately set off about his task. Luthor then turned to Merle and smiled. "Now, I suppose the first order of business will be finding you a room. Eugene's old room is still unoccupied, so I suppose no harm could be done in letting you stay there." He said, motioning for Merle to follow him.

----------

It hadn't been long before they reached an unassuming wodden door somewhere in the recesses of the castle. Luthor grabbed the door's handle, feeling unseen magical energies dance across its surface as he pushed it open, somewhat cautiously Merle noticed, and stood aside to let her in.

draven finished the physical part of his training and cleaned himself up. then, just as he was about to start his meditation, he heard a loud knock on his door. being the overcautious person thathe is, he grabbed one of his swords and opened the door, ready to strike. before hitting his target, he noticed one of the castle guards standing right in front of him. seeing the poor man obviously scared out of his wits, draven dropped his sword to the floor of his cottage. "you know better than to just knock without announcing yourself," draven said calmly," now would you explain why you're here?" it took the guard a couple moments before any words would form in his throat, but finnaly he replied, "captain volkmar wishes to see you at the castle posthaste. he didn't give me any details, but he told me to fetch you and bring you back." draven nodded to the man and said, " give me a moment and i will prepare myself to go see him. tell captain volkmer i will be there in a few moments." with that, the guard hurried away to inform captain volkmer. draven changed his clothes, called for tal to perch on his shoulder, and headed toward the castle.
