Hey, have you ever heard an entirly idiotic idea about abortion? I debate people all the time who have the most absurd reasons for defending abortion. One such example: "well, we could run out of food, the population could become to much, and we'll all starve" come on, i mean, seriously, mabey i'll except that as a VALID point of view when im starvation, but honestly, some things that you'll hear are completly ridiculous. "a fetus is like an acorn..." I wanted to share these few "valid debating points" with you and see if you have heard any better ones. Enjoy.

I've heard the Acorn one alot. Somthgin alonf the lines of an acorn isn't a tree. Its an invalid comparison. The fetus is not the same as an acorn. The acorn is a seed, it carries the tree inside of it, that tree will sprout from the acorn if the right conditions are met. So the acorn would be more like the mother then the fetus.
As for the comparison itself. The fetus is a full human being (person =/= human, human =/= person. I do not beleive in the concept of personhood, so its actualy a moot point when debatign it with me.). The fertalised egg is a full human being. The moment you have a DNA sturcture completly sepearte from the mother and father, that, given there are no complications, WILL grow, you have a human being.
In layman's terms: The acorn is the carryer of the tree, not the tree itself. The fetus is the fetus, not the carryer of the fetus.

that's insane
so what if an acorn has seeds in it. You take that logic and i should have gotten life in prison for cutting down the tree that was leaning on my garage last week
that's really quite dumb.

I've had an argument and I was telling this lady that a baby was alive inside her, and she argued back then that if she scaped of some teeth cells, or brushed her teeth she would be killing a living thing, when my word was alive Pro-life Moms are bitches, pardon my language

"The fetus is a parasite!" Noooo! We should kill all the fetuses before they grow bigger, then move on to the mothers head and suck her brain out!

I heard alot of dumb things. I hate the Row vs. Wade or whatever their names are debate.
It's about a Someone not helping his cousing by not giving him bone marrow, yes it's sad and abit selfish but he himself isn't killing him on purpose, the guy just got cancer some how. Abortion on the other hand are killing a person on purpose, two different things that have nothing to do with each other really (that I can see).
Half of the debates people use don't make sense most of the time.
Also hate the "it's mine body so I can do whatever I want" since when was the fetsu her body? the Fetus(babdy) is a different person/human (whatever you want to call it) with it's own body that just devolping and using her body temperarly.

Two from the pro-life side, since these arguments only make us look bad, or serve to make us get laughed at.
"It could be te next Einstein!"- It just doesn't work. The same logic could state that it could also be the next Hitler, so may as well abort.
"God/Jesus/Spaghetti Monster doesn't like abortion"- Our demographic, the people we are arguing with, are stereotypcially atheists or agnostics. They will not be phased, nor care about a religious argument which has no bearing on their life. Even then, there are oter biblical sources which could be twisted to say anything.
And, for the pro-choice side,
"Well, abortion is legal, so what's the problem?"
-Slavery was legal, murder of "witches" was legal, the holocaust was legal, opression of women was legal. Stoning and crucifiction was legal. Legality does not mean perfection.

This is not exactly from an argument, but I find this quote quite stupid.
"What REALLY worries me is that my peers really do value the life of a fetus over the rights and life of a woman. "
rolleyes Could that possibly be because most people don't buy into the Us vs. Them line of thought about fetuses? I really think the militant pro-choicers here on Gaia are projecting their feelings onto others. They hate fetuses and the thought of being pregnant, therefore all women must feel like that. But it just ain't so. Even most women who have abortions don't do it because they hate babies.

Yeah, how is respecting a life of a fetus more than conveneince of a woman liking the fetus MORE?
That logic is a bit twisted. Basically- "You gave CPR to a guy who got hit by a bus, but you won't drive me to the movies?! WHY do you value that guy more than me?!"

I'm sure I could find a lot in the thread I was recently participating in.
And by "participating" I mean making valid statements and being yelled at by about 8 different pro-choicers who already hate me and thus refuse to see any merit in anything I say.
I don't go into abortion debates to debate, really. Not to change people's minds. But rather to correct misstatements and shoddy logic.

Ya, I know how it is when you're debating pro-choicers who refuse to listen; except, while im refuding all their repetitive talking points, I allways hear, "Just like a pro-life person not to listen to anything say and try to talk over me." coughcough-hypocrits-cough. smile
