captincortez` im really intrested in the subject of the chernobyl incident please discuss and explain to others what happend While I was in college in SC I had a Russian Professor who was actually near where this accident took place. She was really quick to say that it was all the governments fault and the accident should have not taken place and that the cover up of the incident was even worse. I am just glad that she was not herself affected by the radiation cause she is a lovely woman. As for what happened and how it happened Wikipediaactually has a good explaination on what went on (as much as I hate using wiki as a resource).

Yeah, I don't know much other than it's the worse nuclear meltdown in history, and that because of it alot of it alot of our fish contain a high Mercury content which makes seafood quite a hazzard to eat in the long run.

Maybe it would help if you posted some information about it yourself and be more specific about the matters you want disscussed.
This is so vauge and not many people know about or are informed about this incident, please edit your post to include such information....or I will eventlually do it for you and perhaps create a discussion you were not looking for.
Thanks
-Catz

When a nuke goes off the radiation is not spread equally like a bomb that goes off...the radiation is directed by the wind so even if you are closer, but away from the wind, you will not be affected as much as if you were further away but the wind is blowing in your direction.

I agree, second worst disaster in history and caused by ignorant people. It is second only IMO to the nuclear bombings in hiroshima and Nagasaki. There was a documentary in either the History or Discovery channels. I'm a dork since I don't watch other channels aside from the news and cartoons. Anyway, it could have been prevented if I remember correctly. There was a pressure build up that was not common and the personel in charge at that time had no idea what to do. It wasn't a big suden explotion like everyone would think, keeping in mind the atomic bombs. Pressure build up, then fires started leading to explotions (there are gas lines and cables), followed by the nuclear meltdown. It was a huge radiation spill. Meaning everything was covered in radiation and it died. This is off the top of my head since I saw and hear from the thing while I was still maybe a sophomore in undergrad.
It happened in some town in the Ukraine not in Russia. Kitten was right on target! The pattern of the winds carried the radioactive fallout everywhere. It eventually got to North America. Kind of the same way that back home in the Caribbean we are able to get sand particles from the Sahara Desert in Africa.
A quick note about radiation that I would like to point out. It can be lethal and induce mutations in your DNA that can potentially induce cancer. Whenever radiologists, technitians or even researchers have to use radioactive compounds or be exposed we have to wear a radiation tracker pin. It tells us what doses of radiation we were exposed to. so in case of any spill or leak we can get the heck outta the place.
Sorry I ramble too much!

My friend Seth is a glowworm (nuke engineer) on a nuclear aircraft carrier and he has to wear one of those when he is on shift.

If i was in the nuclear bombings in hiroshima and Nagasaki I would much rather die than have bad things happen to me like, my eye balls falling out, my skin melting off of my body, etc..!
