DAY OF SILENCE, April 18, 2007: The Day of Silence is an annual event held to bring attention to anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and discrimination in schools. Students and teachers nationwide will observe the day in silence to echo the silence that LGBT and ally students face everyday. In it's 11th year, the Day of Silence is one of the largest student-led actions in the country.

Support the end of hate crimes. Show everyone how LOUD silence can be. Echo the sound and bring awarness to the silence that haunts kid's world to help end it.

I tried to stay silent, but I did not have the resolve. I did, however, stop the bullying of a student who is made fun of because he is effeminate (though not gay)

My first hour is full of homophobes, no matter how they deny it.

I did it the whole day at school, and brought in something for my teachers.

They were all really supportive. One even said "THAT WAS TODAY?! Aw, if I'd've known I would've shut my mouth!"

My school's on break this week, so we're holding ours next week. It feels strange to not be able to participate in the regular one...

I lacked the resolve, unfortunately.

Its not bad. The point is to show that these kind of problems should never be silenced.

Mainly its silenced because alot of people don't know how to work with them. If I knew the people I did now back in middle school I could have saved myself alot of misary.

The number of participants this year was overwhelming! Students you'd never expect to be involved in this kind of thing were wearing ribbons, and even if they didn't make it through the whole day they tried. We ran out of ribbons before the first bell and one of the teachers involved in keeping together the GSA had to go out to buy more at lunch. Even those without ribbons did it, Heather (someone in our group) going so far as to draw a ribbon on a sticky note then write "I lost my ribbon, but I remain silent" and stick it on her shirt. whee

It actually made first period (can't stand teacher) a lot more bearable, even though at first he wouldn't acknowledge it, then when he finally did he was giving off the feel of not liking it (only teacher the entire day for me who did that, yay!) The silence was broken for most people in the middle of third when the school went into lockdown because of a convicted felon who had escaped from the police station 3 blocks away, but after a bit of a panic I went silent again and only broke it one other time in Chem when I really didn't understand something (I'm an applied learner when it comes to the subject) and had to ask.

But yeah, I think we did pretty good today. sweatdrop

Okay, I'm posting my DoS story here and it just make me squee every time I think about it.

Oh. My. Gosh. It was the awesomest day ever! I started out in my music theory class and got a quirky look from my professor when I was sitting front and center in the class and not singing, then she read my shirt, figured it out, then grinned at me. Then enter my music literature class. I had to put a speaking card on my professor's stand and he wasn't happy about it (the class revolves around the discussion of the scores), but did respect it. Then he took me into his office to discuss my first drraft of my research paper. "You're not going to be able to talk in my office either, are you?!" I shook my head no, but did break down and said a few things about how I felt I could scrape by with a D- in the course. After that, I remained as silent as possible (damn me working in an office where I had to help kids all day, usually on the phone >_<) until my Women's Chorus rehearsal. It makes me sad that I missed re-recording some songs from our concert Monday night, but it was a sacrifice I was willing to make in the face of the abuse/flak I and my family members get. Then I broke my silence a couple hours early because so many people were asking why I was doing this. They'd noticed me being silent all day and I just felt I needed to say it. It was so awesome to see how much support I had and a few people were interested in doing it next year.

My school was out too. I can't do it next week or anything though because I'd honestly get in trouble. My teachers would say "Yeah, too bad, you're going to talk or fail this class" x___x It's homophobe city here -- even most of those who aren't homophobes still just don't care. -_-

TWO DAYS!!! TWO ******** DAYS!!! I'M LATE BY TWO ******** DAYS!!!
I JUST realized today that it was April!!! UGH I am SO PISSED OFF AT MYSELF!!!
Well... Yesterday, I DID wear my Sexy Gay Rainbow Scarf in my hair...
It's this piece of fabric that my friend gave me two years ago. She was in Home Ec. and making herself a pair of rainbow pajama pants, and she knew I loved rainbows (and was an advocate of gay rights), so she saved me a strip just long enough to tie around myself (but it doesn't stay, so I USUALLY don't wear it as a belt). I used to wear it a lot, around my neck. Sometimes I'd try to tie it around my waist. But lately, I've been putting it in my hair.
And last year, the second year I celebrated the Day of Silence, I wore it around my neck along with a home-made sign pinned to my shirt that said "DAY OF SILENCE," and on my hand I wrote "Silence is LOUD."

I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED IT!!! I'M SO, SOOO SORRY!!!

It was interesting.
It was actually kind of theraputic. not having to talk for a day. being able to listen to conversations with out my own input (which made me realize how absolutely STUPID people can be... nnot that i'm not at times wrong or ignorant but people need a serious reality check)
Got a lot of s**t for it. Had some great comebacks for the s**t i got.

*silence*

no. what i really wanted to say... haha
So this guy in my second block got my attention after people stopped freaking out about the DOS... mouthed to me "you're going to hell" and pointed downward.

A: Why on freaking EARTH would I want to go to Heaven and have to live with all the prejudicial ASSHOLES who are supposedly going there? I'd rather be in hell with my friends and people who make actual sense than in boring a** heaven with you.

another guy said " they're just carpet loving dykes...

A: At least i can GET carpet. unlike you.
biggrin

but no. I didn't say a word.
someone brought purple ducktape. it was great.

You. Are. Super. biggrin

I agree with you though. Better to celebrate with sinners than lament with saints, that's my motto.

I mean... my friends and I were thinking about it and... Like the Idea of heaven as people see it... some place with clouds and harps and angels.

It sounds boring to me. stare

My friend told me they really just stopped working hard on the advertising because they only have to be better than hell. xp

I thought it was good.
