I was searching ebay for gothic lolita dresses and one result on the page said "gothic lolita dress" but the outfit actually looked skankier then something a hooker would wear mad ,and yet they called it lolita. neutral Ive seen lots of things like this lately

Things like this upset me as well. Even though this is not about the dresses, but one of my teachers looked at me in a strange way when she saw 'Lolita <3' printed on my binder.
I hate when people jump to conclusions, or sell skanky dresses like that. All it does is give Lolita a bad name.

in response to the comment above, your teacher's reaction was pretty logical. Chances are your teacher has only heard of the book and that kind of lolita would be a bit odd to put on a binder.

killer-rabbit we just need to spread the word that lolita is not what people think. That is by far the worst, most unintelligent thing I've heard. You try to spread the word, and over-commercialized organizations get a hold of the idea of Lolita. They (like hot topic) bring it to the mainstream market, where it falls to the popular culture. What happens there? It gets chopped off to mini-skirt and tube top status. Then someone else will try to "spread the word." Think things through first.

I agree but woah there you dont haveta be so unpleasant about it. Yes I hate when I browse through ebay for Lolita and find this eek what are people smoking? Its disgusting heres the link to the auction http://cgi.ebay.com/French-Maid-Gothic-Lolita-Cosplay-Dress-Outfit-BN-6206_W0QQitemZ320104225313QQihZ011QQcategoryZ19255QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I dont think its possible to be anymore wrong then this person is. The auction item is proclaimed to be "French Maid Gothic Lolita Cosplay dress outfit" eek That doesnt even make sense! Lolita is not French Maid. Lolita is not cosplay. And there is NO way that is an outfit....looks more like sex skank wear to me... sorry but when I saw this I just wanted to impale this person with a parasol stare

It's true that these listings come up on ebay, but its only a small minority of the listings. And when selling anything on ebay you want to put as many key words in there as possible to sell the item. Also, honestly who is going to go out dressed in public like the pic posted above? An average non-lolita could consider lolita cosplay for themselves because they would be wearing something that is not in their usual attire. Its like when people dress up as hippies on halloween.
And to the spreading the word about what lolita is, I think as long as people are being fully informed there is no problem. If people don't have access to the correct information, how will that change their misconceptions about the lolita fashion?

It's understandable. Even in the most modest of aristocratic outfits, you can pull arousal out of many. It saddens me slightly that this idea is a popular understanding of a Gothic Lolita lifestyle, though only the clothing style is to be aplied to the outfit, then it is technically alright in my mind, which is a technicallity on one and a half parts.
And yet, it still disturbs me. D:<

Eh. That's what ******** is for. People word spam their auctions on ebay to get more views and potentially more buyers. It's all about money.
But yeah, lolita is never gonna go away, people are always gonna assume you're talking about the book, not the miniscule fashion from overseas.

I've come up with a term for the other lolita-- "Nabo-loli." this is like, the idea of lolita that most of the U.S has. it comes from Vladimir Nabokov's name, the dude who wrote the book "Lolita," thus giving the name its sexual connoctation. I use it in my head a lot.
it's irritating, how they think anything with lace can be classified as lolita. ):<

I guess I'd like to inform more about the elegantness of the lolita style but as with everything else, people are more concerned about being slutty than following any rules of elegance and beauty. I'm the only loli in this area that I've ever seen (though there are some I've never met) and though I want to meet more lolis, I don't want to see some half-naked person with frills and lace claiming they're loli ><

Its hard to find anything good here in america Ive found some skirts and shirts that would work for the right outfit but they are still ********. for example I was at kohls and they had a ton of the victorian inspired button up top things. they were verry pretty but upon picking them up you discover they are made of MESH. or some other see threw crap! how hard is it to get it right and make it out of cotton, or poplin, or a nice blend? no, here in america we must have everything made out of the sheerest fabric possable so your either forced in to buying tank tops or having your bra/ tatto seen right thew your shirt. I HATE IT!
