Whether you know that or not, today is the Israeli Holocaust Martyrs & Heroes Remembrance Day. I read a reportage about Primo Levi; the reported chosen to open her written work as follows: ...."There is a question that I ask in an early phase of acquaintanceship with someone: if you had been in Europe at the beginning of the 40's, what would happen to you? Will you be alive? Dead? How?"
I would like to know what do you think; do you think you will be able - physically and mentally, when it depends in you – to clutch at your lives? Or maybe the dehumanization and the inhuman situation/a physical defect/chronic disease and so on will defeats you?
Please, make your answer be as honest as you can.

hmm....That's actually a really good question.
Well, I would like to think that I would be alive and still practicing Judaism. I figure I could learn to stand the starvation part, as my metabolism has always been exceptionally adaptive to whatever I eat. And as much as I know it wasn't G-d's fault that the Holocaust happened, I don't know if I would be able to remain a practicing Jew. To go through all of that horror, all of that misery.... I just can't even imagine it. Thus, I honestly can't tell you even what I think I might have done, as I've obviously been fortunate enough to avoid any situation of that extreme a calibur. All I know is that I'd rather die than fight another person for a piece of bread or something, no matter how miserable or sickly I am. I know I would do everything I possibly could to ensure that my family survives, even if it meant sacrificing my own life or food.
I know for certain I would be scarred for life. Physically, I'd probably always appear much older than I am, with the look in my eye of somebody just sick of it all and wanting some peace without commiting suicide. Mentally, I don't know if I could ever relate to anybody else who wasn't in the Holocaust with me. I don't know if I'd be able to look another person in the eye without feeling, "You have no idea how to relate to me." And of course, I'd probably have some kind of perpetual or chronic illness, as those camps were inhuman.
I honestly can't tell you, as I hope to never experience something like that, and I hope nobody else does as well.

Well, let me put it this way... In this book I wrote, the story is pretty much like this (names have been changed to protect copyright):
~Taken Down Because I'm Paranoid~
The reason I brought up my book at all is because it's kind of me spilling my gut out and ranting and having a fit and pretty much answering your question... Maybe it would be better if you read the book sweatdrop

What a hard question to answer, but it is a necessary one. I think my only answer right now is that I don't know. I, of course, would want with all my heart to be strong, but the human spirit can only endure so much before it crumbles. I know myself, and I can imagine that I would be destroyed. I think that more than anything, I would be affected by those around me, rather than my own pain.
Also, I am somewhat sickly, and I don't think that I would have made it. What a scary thought.

I'm both Jewish and interracial. I wouldn't have stood a chance. I would have been one of the first people taken to the work camps or the death camps, dead before anyone even knew there was a problem in Europe.

I guess I'd probably get shot for trying to create a rebellion or something. I'd rather die than try to help Nazis.

Besides, I don't know German.
And what's with the sweatdrop icon?

Freedom is... I don't have a Hebrew font, but the letters I believe are Chet-(Vav?)-Reish-Yud-Nun. Chorin. It could also be cheirut, as in "Z'man Cheiruteinu," the Season of Our Freedom.
