Taken from DeathGod.org:
"Variety has confirmed a Sankei Sports report that Hideo Nakata, the director of several Ringu movies including the first, will now direct the Death Note spinoff movie tentatively titled "L." His last completed film was the ghost story Kaidan, and producers are planning the Death Note spinoff for a 2008 release.
Ken'ichi "Matsu-Ken" Matsuyama has already signed on to reprise his role of L, the detective adversary of the Death Note main lead Light. Producer Takahiro Satô announced that the staff is "aiming for a big hit in America with the teamup of Nakata and Matsu-Ken." Production will begin in August, with a teaser trailer set to begin showing in Japanese theaters on April 14."
This movie will, of course, take place before the events of "Death Note." Who else is intrigued?

It's based on the novel. I hope the US gets it. (The story is of when L worked with Naomi Misora)

I hope that if they do make it its not with American voices. We all know how that goes. Why is it that in this great country where we had so many scientific breakthroughs, cures, gov programs etc we can't even put good voices in for anime? Come on its not that hard!!

When I found out I totally freaked. I love L, besides Mello, hes my favourite. And Matsuyama did a fantastic job as L in the 1st 2 DN movies in my opinion. I cant wait ^_^ As long as they dont do english voice overs HO MY GOD i will die. As soon as I get the money Im getting the 2 DN movies for my own...and im watching them in japanese neutral

I am completely unshocked by this. In fact, I could see it coming.
In January, Oricon style did a report on "movie/manga" spin-offs, and L topped the list for (combined) male and female respondents, top for female, and second top choice for male. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-01-08/oricon-fans-want-l-char-aznable-spinoffs http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/confidence/40995/
Japan is just as bad as the US for pumping out sequels and spin-offs if they think they can cash in on they money of the original. :'D

The L Movie, as I just saw in a magazine, is releasing very soon. If not already, I think it will be released before this month is over. However, the bad news is that the L movie had only been released in Japan. Well, as you know, once it is released, the movie should be translated and subbed fairly quickly. Then, all we lovers can grab it for our own. 4laugh
