In spite of the warmth of the weather outside, Aurrek wore his usual fur-trimmed velvet garb that looked as though it could make a Viking sweat in the dead of winter. The heat did not seem to bother him, though; on the contrary, his interest was focused pointedly on the sky, and not on the pram he pushed along the sidewalk as he wandered through town. It was interesting to see the reactions he got just walking along and pretending he did not have a baby.
Kelreid was satisfied for the moment without his father's attention, as his father's white crab was currently keeping him occupied. He laughed a little as he fiddled with the creatures antennae, and the crab actually seemed content to wiggle them around and join in the game.

Ah, fresh air! Still getting over weeks of relentless studying, Alek was eager to get out, as was Anala. He limped along cheerfully, carrying Anala in one arm and a stuffed rabbit in the other. He played with her as he moved along, paying little attention to his surroundings. Thankfully, he had yet to crash into anyone, since people saw him coming.

Catching movement at the corner of his eye, Aurrek glanced at the people on the sidewalk just in time to see someone coming right at him and not paying attention. Frowning, he worked to turn the pram to the side to get it out of the inattentive pedestrian's way; the pram responded by demonstrating quite nicely that it was not made for such complex maneuvers as turns, and tipped dangerously to the side.
Eyes widening, Aurrek tried to wrestle the thing upright onto all four wheels again without dumping his child onto the pavement. It would have worked out alright, except just as he shifted the thing, one of the little wheels caught in a hole that had crumbled in the sidewalk.
"Oh, s**t!"
Wow, things were moving! This was exciting! Kelreid giggled and flailed his arms, cheerfully rapping his chubby knuckles on the crab's shell.
The crab knew something was wrong as he felt the pram tipping, but the sudden knocking scrambled his innards, leaving it unable to try to get out. Stupid baby....

Alek, jerked back out of la-la-land, blinked dumbly at the tilting pram in front of him. There was something wrong with this pictu--wait a minute! Alek yelped and dropped the rabbit, grabbing the side of the pram to help keep it upright. He itched to grip it with two arms, but that would involve dropping Anala. She wasn't helping much though, moving around like she was! She wriggled in Alek's slipping hold, trying to reach for the pram as well.

With the stranger's help, Aurrek managed to catch the pram and keep it from dumping his kid onto the pavement. Something underneath made a metallic scraping sound as the god hauled it back onto all four wheels, though, so after flashing the kind stranger a quick smile of thanks, the god leaned down to make sure everything was still attached.
"Thank you, and sorry," the white-skinned man said after a moment, looking up from where he was crouched. He made to get up, then noticed the dropped toy within arm's reach. Aurrek picked up the rabbit, then straightened before offering the plush to the stranger. "This was yours, right?"
The translucent boy in the pram, seemingly unaware of just how close he had come to eating concrete, waved cheerfully to the stranger with both hands before going back to bonking the crab's shell with his hands.
The crab waved its claws around somewhat jerkily, looking like it was trying to fend off the soft-skinned baby hands.

Alek nodded, giving a small smile and fixing his grip on Anala. "Thanks, and no problem," he said, taking the rabbit. "You kinda lost me though; sorry for what?" Alek briefly glanced into the pram--the kid was fine, right?--and looked away. He did a double take at the child's translucent skin, though, raising his eyebrows. Interesting. "I think you might wanna save that crab."
Anala grabbed at the rabbit, holding it close as she looked at Kelreid. She watched him, then looked at her rabbit, evaluating it. Bonking looked like fun, but Rabbit wouldn't be up to it; she was too soft. Alek maybe?

"Sorry for nearly dumping my child onto the pavement right in front of you," he said. It still felt so strange for Aurrek to talk about this kid like it really was his own. The boy was adopted, which Aurrek did suppose was the best he would be able to hope for, child-wise.
... Well, it did kind of look like him in some ways, maybe.
"Oh, and don't worry about the crab." The navy-haired man grinned condescendingly to the shelled creature in the pram. "He's got a shell for a reason." He leaned down and flicked the crab's claw lightly with his fingernail.

Alek blinked, slightly perplexed. What an odd thing to apologize for. He tried to think of something to respond with, but it all sounded lame. "Well, it's not like you meant to do it...right? And the kid's ok." He shifted his stance as much as he could, dragging his bad leg over a little. Leaning forward, Alek watched the crab move, commenting, "Funny crab, by the way. I don't think I've ever seen one in white. What kind of crab is it?"

"Oh, the crab?" Aurrek said, his eyebrow twitching ever so slightly. If he had a dollar for every time someone asked about the creature... well, human money was ultimately useless to someone with a lifespan like his, but he would still have a lot of dollars. There were days when Aurrek wondered who it would hurt if he just went and told the truth about the crab, but the usual lie always managed to tumble from his lips anyway before he knew it.
"Oh, he's my familiar," the god told him. "I can't let too much distance get between him and me, but I guess that's gotten easier to handle now that I have the kid." Aurrek nodded at the pram. "I can just toss him in here. Nordri gets a ride, and the kid gets a squirming shelled teething ring." He glanced down at Kelreid and the crab again and smirked. "Or a drum, today, looks like."
Kelreid squealed and slowed his pounding on the crustacean as he blinked and squinched up his face in an effort to focus his baby-eyes on Alek.
The crab, glad to be getting a break from being beaten upon, scuttled out of the baby's reach as soon as he could gather his little thoughts.

"A familiar? Cool..." Alek looked from Aurrek to Nordri, impressed. Despite the fact that half of everybody on Gaia and their auntie was magical, Alek was still somewhat in awe of things magical. "Kid's going to have some strong teeth then, I'll bet. Most teething rings are just wierd, squishy stuff, yanno?" Alek smiled, vaguely amused. He looked into the pram, meeting Kelreid's eyes, and waved. Anala, noticing the movement, waved as well, bunny flopping in her grip.

"Yeah, cool, isn't it?" Aurrek half-heartedly agreed, and went along with the subject change with great relief.
"Yeah, I guess he'll get teeth eventually, right? I get him teething stuff and he chews on that okay, but if he wants to chew on the crab, too, I figure why stop him? Everything else that gets into those cute little semi-see-through blue hands goes into the mouth. And kids grow out of that eventually. Do you really think it'll give him stronger teeth?"
Oh, how Aurrek hated discussing the crab.
Well, he could not quite see it too well, but it looked an awful lot like attention. Cheerfully and clumsily, Kelreid flailed his arms back at Alek in greeting. Coordination would come later on, with teeth.

"Well...I guess so? What doesn't break his teeth ought to make 'em stronger, I think... By the way, the kid's skin is pretty neat too. Never seen translucent kids before." Alek absentmindedly mussed his hair with his free hand and shifted Anala's weight. His arm was getting kinda tired. He smiled at Kelreid--
"HI~!"
--though the smile quickly changed to a slight grimace at Anala's own enthusiastic salutation. Too loud and too close to his ear, geez!
Anala giggled, unaware of Alek's discomfort.

"The little squirt's some kind of water elemental, I think," Aurrek said with a nod. Then he clasped his hands behind his back a bit self-consciously at Alek's comment about translucent skin; while the god's white skin was not quite so close to transparent as Kelreid's, his white hands, especially, allowed more than a little light to pass through in general. It was more difficult to see the translucency in Aurrek's face, except for the dark circles beneath his eyes that always made him look like he had not slept well for quite some time.
Lucky kid at least managed to look healthy and translucent, Aurrek noted with some jealousy.
"Hopefully he'll get teeth soon, too," the god added with a small sigh. "It's kind of... embarrassing, I guess, to have to go buy mush in a jar for him all the time."
"Aaaah!" Kelreid shouted inarticulately back at the younger child who had just greeted him. Then he giggled. He could be loud, too, see? The boy squirmed and flailed his fists excitedly.

"He does look a lot like it, water. Sorta like he'd turn into a puddle any minute." Alek shifted Anala again, feeling blood return to his arm. Numb, ick. Why didn't they have a stroller or something? "Is getting baby food really all that bad? I wouldn't know, 'cause Anala came to us with teeth." He swallowed a yawn with surprise; he wasn't at all tired. Weird. Was it because Aurrek looked like an insomniac? Some kinda sympathetic tiredness? Huh.
"Hows youu?" Anala yelled back, smiling sunnily. She didn't know what she was doing, but this was fun! Looking at Alek, she paused and at the same pitch added, "Al ok yeah?" He was rubbing his ear like it hurt.

The white crab, having taken refuge under a blanket for the last few minutes in hopes of avoiding more pounding, lifted the thin fabric up in his claws and tried to shove it away a little so it could see again. Then it waved its claws a little at Anala; it had learned that its limited means of communication generally did not help convey its messages at all, especially to Aurrek or to little mortals, but there was still a chance that its flailings would get the girl to quiet down a little.
Aurrek shrugged a little and glanced away, trying to change the subject again as he replied, "It's just not something I'm used to. Didn't ask to be a father and all that." His cheeks darkened somewhat, like a blush only bluer. "N-n-not that I was messing around or anything like that. This kid showed up on my doorstep, practically."
