We all know of the "classic series" which until recently, was 1-8. However, I propose a change. Seeing as all the "old series" actors are now actually quite old, the name makes sense. EXCEPT! The eighth Doctor, McGann, is still quite young. He, being only in one movie, doesn't count in the new series. However, he was too far apart from the old series to be titled as "old" and so...My idea would be for the old series to be 1-7 and rather than calling 8-10 "new series" we call them: The next generation....or something....
My Point. The 8th is too young to be counted in the old series and not officialy part of the new series. So we call 1-7 "classic/ old" and the last three all clump into the next group...
(My apologies for those of you who thought this was going to be a Star Trek Crossover thing...)
The other option is to have poor 8 all alone in his own group, to be joined by the other doctors that don't fit anywhere, like the radio show dudes...

Paul McGann's audio adventures bridged the long gaping silence between 8 and 9. But you are right that he's kinda in a place of his own, kinda a movie Doctor. I'd group him with the other movie one offs if he hadn't gotten numbered somehow.

Yeah... McGann is kinda a one-off... even though there was a gap between his movie and the old series, there was also a noticibly large gap between him and the new series. So (because its easier to divide them into just two groups), it really comes down to whether you think he should be a part of the new series or the old series.
Personally... even though the movie was kinda similar to the new series with all this *Doctor feeling emotions and falling in love with chicks* kinda thing, I've always just considered him part of the old series. I don't think its really to do with how old McGann is or how alike the new series are to the movie, but more... when it was released, really.
See- even though there was a gap between him and the older series, it was kinda... a last attempt thing at keeping it going, sort of... I mean... Doctor Who had kinda come to a standstill, and they made a movie, and it kinda ended altogether. Completely. It was only recently that they decided to revive it again. So... going by that, even though there was a large gap, I still think its sort of a... disjointed... part of the old series.
... well, that was a rather lengthy explanation... blaugh

The way I've been doing it is considering 1-7 as the "original" series, 8 as the movie, and 9 and 10 as the new series. It's just what's easiest for me. Actually, though, the idea of 1-7 as the original and 8-10 as the new sounds like a nice idea. I just can't lump 8 in with 1-7.

*shrugs* They're all Doctors, I just lump 'em all in together. The only division I have is Pre-Time War & Post Time War because everything changes for him & the TARDIS.

McGann dosent count he should be taken out and shot. If I were going to count him I'd have to count Peter Cushing and all novelization doctors.

Renaissance McGann dosent count he should be taken out and shot. If I were going to count him I'd have to count Peter Cushing and all novelization doctors. I totally agree that the movie sucked and if that's all the exposure that you've had to McGann as the Doctor I totally see where you are coming from. I really hated his portrayal of the Doctor when I'd only seen the movie. If you listen to the audio dramas that he's done though, he's actually pretty good. It was what Fox gave him that was crap.

I have infact heard several of the audio stories and I still will not count him. If I counted him for that I would also have to count the comic relief gang from The Curse of The Fatal Death as well as every other ligitimate spoof ever made. Not to mention the previously mentioned movies and novel only doctors. There are 9 doctors not 10.

Well, Tennant's Doctor told Sarah Jane something implying that he was in fact the tenth incarnation. So unless he's as bad at math as I seem to be-- I heard that from someone else, so the math is almost certainly right-- we've got to account for an Eight somehow.
We can say that the Shalka one was Eight for all I care, except he said so clearly, twice, that he was supposed to be the ninth.
And all right, all right, romance stinks, but are you going to deny someone more than a millennium old his first kiss? xd

I didn't hate him so much, but I do like to laugh at him. McGann just didn't happen. lol And Peter Cushing..... lol such a varied, and at times embarassing filmography. I mean, really....The Satanic Rites of Dracula. Nuff said. heart

I spose it makes sense to just ignore him, but the fact is, its kinda odd to just jump from a 7 to a 9 without anything inbetween. I guess that's just why he's there...

The way I figure it, he only got his number because it shows Seven regenerating into him. If he'd just shown up like Nine does I doubt he'd be counted as a proper Doctor, but since we see him regenerating we can't deny it.
That's probably why he's lumped with the classics too, though he's plainly not. Eight is just some weird amoeba like entity floating in the void of the 90s.
But he has floofy hair and voice pr0n so all is forgiven.
