So it's like this...

The first time I noticed this guy Matisyahu was when I was walking past a construction site and saw his posters literally stripped through the whole wall (right next to a bunch of Madonna posters, mind you...LOL).

Just yesterday at the library, I saw that they had gotten in his latest album, "No Place To Be". So I figured, "Why not?" and I took it out. I'm not much of a fan of Reggae, but this guy is Jewish and all that, so I figured I'd give him a try.

Well, first of all, he portrays us Jews as being fanatics who think about nothing but אלהים all day and night and go out with a Torah under our arms.

Second of all, he seems to be using the fact that he's a Hasid to promote his stuff... also, I've looked closely at him, photos and that DVD music video thing that was included with the CD, and I don't see any sidelocks on him.

Do you see any sidelocks here?

What I'd like to know is:
1) What do you think of this guy?
2) Do you listen to his music?
3) Any comments?

PS: If this should be in a subforum, sorry about the mistake!

I think payot is just like any other commandment. I don't see why it's such a big deal. If he wants them, fine, if he doesn't fine. I'm not saying it's a lesser commandment, but many women don't cover their head, but that doesn't make them less righteous...to some.

I've always been a fan of Matisyahu, even before I wanted to convert. I never thought he represented Jews as fanatics, and if he wants to live his life through Hashem and show it constantly, who cares? Wouldn't you much rather Jews be representing us that way then a way that was greedy or unjust?

You might try Youth, it's better than No Place To Be. If you have already, then that's cool. Not everyone likes him...

I don't really like him.
I'm not a big fan of the whole "religious popular music" thing.
I mean, that's a Christian thing. I don't want to be associated with that.

Also, what is the point of singing and rapping about your faith? Why is it so important to share with non-Jews?

The only reason he is doing this and why he seems to be more "fanatical" in your words, is because he converted to Chasidism and many Chasidim want other Jews to be more religious. So I guess this is his way of doing it and of reaching out to other Jews, but he ended up being so successful that to non-Jews it just seems like a gimmick. Also I feel that his music runs a little close to proselytizing which is a big no-no when it comes to non-Jews. I don't like the idea that non-Jews might listen to his music and want to convert, that's not right. Conversion is fine, but people should be called to convert on their own without any coercion or persuasion, even music.

Also, I don't particularly like reggae (though I don't hate it either), and I don't find myself wanting to listen to his music. The only song I like of his is the one that is a reworking of Psalm 137, just because it's catchy and I personally like that Psalm, but whatever.

A friend of mine got his autograph for me as a present which is odd considering I'm not a fan, so I currently use it as a bookmark.

Sure we do.
That's what happens when you put yourself out in the public arena. Once you become a celebrity people have every right to have an opinion about you because they have to see your face everywhere. I mean, it's not like you have any choice.

First of all, agreed^^
And second, the problem is that I don't honestly care about this guy, it's just that he struck me as being kind of fake. He puts on these accents in his songs, even though he is so totally American, and the thing is I am a little worried about the image that he's portraying of Jews. There's no point making us out to be something that will be making more trouble for us 3nodding

    >> I really like him ^^
I think it's nice that record companies have accepted
a person like him into the music industry.
Plus, his song King without a Crown rules.

Don't know too much about him personally, and I've never heard any of his songs but one, but I'm not a fan of reggae myself. sweatdrop

Yeah, people that sing reggae in fake Jamaican accents really bother me.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 17, 2007 1:24 pm

He won't be the first or the last person to play up an accent...

It's lame in some instances, but I really don't understand what the problem is, if he wants to sing that way, why stop him? His music has a better message than about 90% of the music out there today, so I think I can get over his fake accent.

Just my professional opinion.

First of all, he is trying to get non-religous people to come back to Judaism. He does have payos. Not everybody has long payos. He is jewish, so you shouldn't be talking about him like the way you are. you can say that you dont like the music, but everything else you are saying is not very respectful. How would you feel if somebody took a picture of you and started making fun of it????!!!! exclaim exclaim

Errr... Excuse me, but I don't know what you're talking about sweatdrop He hasn't broken any prohibition, his Peyos are fine... It doesn't say anywhere in hallaha that you have to have long Peyos.

Though I have heard someone tell me that they don't like the way he goes about his singing, but hey - I think it's wonderful that someone was able to fit into that world of music and bring people close. He's far better than any message they'd get out there, and I think he's doing a very great thing.

Sorry, just my opinion sweatdrop .

It's the idea of non-Jews consuming his music and the message and wanting to be Jewish that really bothers me. That's against Jewish law. You can't convert people, even if you're passively doing so. There is a REASON why there isn't a huge market for popular music that has a Jewish message.
