Okay, in the BOOK by GASTON LEROUX (just eliminating confusion) Christine asks Erik if his name points to his scandinaian origin, amd he say no, his name he got by accident. My question is, what was his real name? Any speculations? I know that this is a hard topic to discuss, just because there is no real way of knowing. But what do you think?? And why do you think he changed his name???

It's never really mentioned. Everyone simply accepts him as Erik.
Though I would think (and this is pretty much just my imagination mixing with Kay for a bit here) that we can assume he left home at a young age and if and when he travelled with gypies willingly or un, his real name could've been forgotten. Most times in such cases you're given a nickname or a new name and if you use it long enough it is possible to lose one's real name.
The name Erik is not only Scandinavian in origin, but Czech and Slovanian which means he could've passed through any one of those regions (Russia perhaps) and heard the name and decided he liked it and voila. It's common these days for people to hear names they like and begin calling themselves that, so I don't see why it would've been any different then. Or perhaps he was mistaken for someone else with the name of Erik and never thought to correct it.

Well, if you're going to bring Kay into this, you could also say that it was an accident when he was first given the name. Remember, his mother had been intending to name him something else, but when she saw his face she decided that she couldn't name him what she'd originally intended (Charles, wasn't it?). She just told the priest to name him after himself.

But how would he know if she meant to name him Charles instead? After all, he does say he got it by accident and if it went by Kay (with him being named after the priest) then that would be no accident. Simply irony.

He would probably give himself a rather normal sounding name.

After all, the French were heavy Catholics and they would need to christen the baby and all. But perhaps no priest would touch him, I don't know.

Actually, I think it is mentioned somewhere in the book that he was born in France. I know I read somewhere that Gaston Leroux had Erik born near the area where he, himself, was born.

Erik says just the craziest things, I suppose. whee To be honest though, I don't know exactly what he means and I just take what he says as stuff he says, nothing more. Kay's idea sounds pretty logical to me though, even though I don't really like looking at that as canon, so...

I really like that name... he said he found it? (still reading the book, but is almost done) Well, Leurox didn't give any explaination to it and I think it would be weird to trust a fan author so sticking to the text... we can just assume he got it during the gypsy or persian thing... Anyways at least he has a name so we don't have to keep calling him "The Phantom".
This is the name meaning-
Erik- honorable ruler
