*Tis both a techie AND an actor*
I've only recently gotten into being a techie, but I HEART it! I like lighting crew best, but I'm also done sound before and currently working on a set crew for some senior workshops.

Actually, the way things seem to be at my school is that mostly of our "techies" are girls. You see, we have a fairly SMALL program. I think we might have 30 theatre majors at the MOST. They try and train us to have a little of both fields, but it always seems to turn out that more people become interested in the tech side of theatre. The numbers are strange. I actually did the math though.
So this is like out of the 30 majors we have (About 20 girls and 10 guys):
Male techies: 16% Male actors: 6% A little of both: 10% ------------------------ Female techies: 33% Female actors: 14% A little of both: 21%
Five bucks says you never thought this topic would turn into a math problem now.

At my school we actually have a class which theatre scholarship students and theatre majors are supposed to take to build the sets.
There are a lot more girls in there than guys, but (please don't hurt me!!!) the guys are usually doing the work and showing the girls how to do it.

Considering the fact that I go to an all-girls school and we use guys from our 'Brother School' for shows, it's kind of obvious that most (if not all) of our techies are girls. And trust me, at least all the upperclassmen know how to use all the tools - and they teach everyone else. The only guys that work on the set are our artistic director, technical director and the male actors in the show (everyone in the cast has to do a minimum of 10 hours on set).

The crew manager is a girl. That really rocks. It means that the girls can do pretty much whatever they want (build sets, general run crew, etc.) though there are never many girls in lighting....

Our school makes it a point to keep it fair...we always have one female stage manager and one male stage manager per show. And techie-wise, it's about evenly split, though it's actually mostly the girls who work with the saws and the power tools when it comes to set building.

There were mostly girls in my Theatre Design class last semester. We weren't afraid to use the power tools at all. It was actually pretty fun.

Hey, is my tech group the only one who names all the appliances and things? Like our cart is called Tank, the dolley that goes back and forth to the annex prop building is Big Blue and the big rolling ladder we do lights with is called Henry. There's a big story about Henry, but I won't go into that.... I just want to know is this normal for tech or are we just extra weird.

The only thing I can think of that comes close to naming appliances is in Sound of Music, we nicknamed the hill that Maria uses in the title song 'The Boob'. It really did look like one, sadly.

I can't recall any right now, I'm I'm pretty sure we've got some. We call our little theatre the "death trap." That's cus it's in the basement and if you work in there to much, you'll get sick from all the mold your breathing in. *nod, nod*

eek wow! i didnt expect anyone to use this thread, but i guess i was wrong. whee
as for Das_Naughty!'s post, the crew for most of the shows i've worked(which is quite a bit 3nodding ) is mostly girls. i'm sorry that you wern't able to anything because you were a girl, its not like that where i am. 3nodding in fact our group of sm's and asm's are all girls. 3nodding most of the boys in our crews usually end up doing spot or rail, while the girls usually handle stage crew. but it's always mixed, and everyone can do anything they want. 3nodding its actually quite laid-back.......
and as for sad_loved_girl, we've got nicknames for some things, but only after they've earned it. 3nodding like the theatre that i work in is called the "house of pain", which is really cool because all the employees get shirts that have that written across them. 3nodding we have a certain power drill thats used in industrial factories, and we call it the "angel of death" because its 5 times as powerful as a normal drill. we also give nicknames to students that work the school shows. they're all called "wood weights", because the only thing that they're good for is standing on your piece of wood when you're cutting it so it wont move. xp
