"Life itself is but the shadow of death, and souls departed but the shadows of the living." -Thomas Browne

Generations upon generations of people have found themselves grounded in a land gripped by death; the dead cling to life as a being most people call a "shadow," a creature that is only a whisper of what once was.

For too long the shadows have been using their in-between existence for their own advantage, and the humans have started to try and get rid of them in any way they can think of, be it through religious, scientific, or other manners.

Many humans are intrinsically fearful of the supposed 'evil' shadows, but not every shadow is evil, and these seemingly civilized shadows are often befriended by other shadows and even humans; nevertheless, union between shadow and otherwise is taboo.

Shadows: 'Shadow' is a term coined by a forgotten human, but the description continues to be used to describe 'ghosts' or people who just can't seem to die. The description supposedly fits because, often-times (but not always), the souls of the dead turn into something darker than their previous self, not necessarily physical or personality-wise. (Example: Someone who was a happy, cheerful person while alive, is now a bitter person in death.) It is mostly accepted by humans that shadows are some sort of evil being because of strange powers they posses- disappearing into darkness, etc. Although no "powers" have even been recorded or tested in a lab, many humans believe that shadows have some sort of unnatural power.

Some scientists believe that shadows are not dead humans, but another race all-together.

Humans: Your regular ol' human. Humans often are afraid of shadows for their supposed supernatural powers. There is an all-boys school next to the city, and a university at the heart of it. Please note that this is not a 'school' role play. :3

So, you've been accepted into this role play and you've made yourself a character. As I said in the rules, I would explain more, in detail, the activity concept. Inform me if you're going on a trip/whatever. If an unforeseen absence happens, do not worry, just tell me you're going to gone for a little while ASAP.

IF you do not contact me within 1-2 weeks (that's fourteen days, AT MOST) your character will be dropped like a hot tamale. Does that mean when you finally come back you can't role play? Of course not! But be aware that all other story lines will continue without you.

Username: Tato
Character: Jayden, Jay
Age: 19
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: N/A
Appearance: Dark brown hair falls short, framing his face in a choppy manner. He has light brown eyes and light olive tan to his skin. Jay often wears jeans and a sweat shirt or tee, whichever suits the weather.
History: Jay is a first year student at the city's prestigious university, one of the only places that's recognized as good. Jay and Aoi spent their high school together, but the younger teen died and Jay has been somewhat depressed ever since.
Human/shadow: Human

Username: Tato
Character: Aoi
Age: Died at age 17.
Height: 5' 7"
Weight: N/A
Appearance: Bright green eyes that looked almost unnatural. While alive, Aoi had cropped, strawberry blond hair and a slender build; he always seemed to have a rosy, sort of flushed color to him up until the months before his death.
Human/Shadow: Human.
History: He was Jay's best friend in the entire world, and then he died.

Username: Mint Thimble
Character: Ilan and Espen Leadry
Age: seventeen
Height: each are 5'8"
Weight: that's a secret~!
Appearance: (No picture yet, but I will hopefully draw one soon<3) Ilan and Espen are identical twins. When alive, Espen was indistinguishable from Ilan. Each have short, charcoal black hair that falls in layers mussily across eyes and other various features. Their eyes, however, are vividly surreal shades of hazel -- which means, for practical descriptions, that thei irises of their eyes are pure, honey gold. Their skin is almost severely pale. It's not that they aren't healthy... they were just born with skin like that. Ilan now has many scars and burns along the left side of his body, but they're not too bad...
Human/Shadow: Ilan is human, Espen is a shadow.
History: This pair belongs to quite a wealthy family. However, their father lost much of his money after the mother (having divorced him) sued him after finding out about his affair. Ilan lives with his mother, as Espen had when he was living because neither liked their father very much and their step-mother was much too young and bimbo-y to be of any use whatsoever. Life was (for them) rather regular and normal (and boring) until one evening late last month. Espen was driving Ilan (who was too smashed to do much of anything) home from a late night party. Although he himself was not under any sort of influence (he had always been strict on the 'no substence abuse' thing), he was sufficiently distracted by his brother (who most certainly was) to not be able to react quickly enough to the oncoming car, who's driver was quite drunk himself. Espen died and Ilan survived with some quite noticeable scarring along the left side of his body (including some on his face).
Family: Ilan, Espen, a step-mother, a father, a mother and some other detatched family members...

Username: Nolas
Character: Lucian
Age: 18
Height: 5'11
Weight: 149lbs
Appearance: http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/Dhaundrin/RPChar11.jpg
Human/Shadow: Human
History: Lucian had grown up in a relatively normal life-style. At the age of seven, however, his father decided to leave the family. While this didn't have a tremendous emotional effect on Lucian, he does now seem to have a bit of a problem trusting others. While his aunt had come to help his mother with the kids, he took it upon himself to keep an especially watchful eye on his sister.
Family: A mother, an aunt, and a younger sister

Username: Higashi Umi
Character: Talon Hawk "My parents really were on something when they named me..."
Age: 17
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 155 lbs'
Appearance: Gangly, terribly skinny, and very tall. Talon doesn't particularly like his body/appearance. He has jaw-length, curly hair, frost-blue eyes, and a somewhat narrow face. His vision is terrible, therefore he's always seen wearing incredibly thick specs.
Human/Shadow: Human
History: Talon came from a pretty bad background. His parents had little or no money most of the time. Mainly because they'd spend it all on drugs, and "Smokes" He lived in a trailer, and barely had enough to make it to a school. At sixteen, he found a job, worked hard enough to get into the private male school which he lived only a couple miles away from. A decent drive.
Family: His parents, Tina and Dirk Hawk, barely took care of him as a child. Therefore, for most of his life, he was brought up by his aunt Raine Edwards (mother's side) who has a fairly successful life at owning her own five star restaurant.
Other: Because of his aunt Raine, Talon became a music man. Under his aunt's money, he took piano at the age of five, and started violin at the age of seven. Not only that but he sings too! He's a very accomplished musician for his age.

The younger teen smiled a bit, pain hidden beneath the surface of upturned lips. "I'm glad...you came, Jay," he murmured in his ever soft-sounding voice.

The date had been seared into his brain somewhere.

It had been in October, he was sure of that. Late October. October 24th, several days before Halloween and only a few months before winter- their favorite season.
October 24th had been the last day he ever saw his friend.
The boys at school said that Aoi had died from being so sad all the time, and that he was sure to become a shadow. They joked that if he did... maybe his gloomy attitude would do a 180 and he'd actually be happy for a change, that maybe death hadn't been such a bad thing for Aoi.

Rubbing at his forehead, the teen sighed heavily. It had been almost five months now and Aoi hadn't come back. He was dead.

"It's been... bad, ever since dad came home. He says, 'No son of mine is going to die before me." The gruff imitation threw the sullen, pasty teen into a fit of hacks and coughs and tears. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."

Jayden, commonly known as Jay, nineteen years old, was perched atop his balcony, legs dangling over the side of the railing. His mother had asked him a thousand times over not to do the very thing he was doing but he never listened. The small adrenaline rush was enough to help him forget...and that was what made him never listen to his mom. Forget about school, and girls, and the jokes, and- and Aoi. It had been five months... and no sign of the teen who had died much too early.

With a slight smile, the brown eyed teen looked up at the cloud-dotted sky. He remembered one time...one time Aoi had sworn, sworn on everything that he'd seen one. He's seen a shadow, "No, not the kind on the ground!" he'd exclaimed with a pout at Jay's disbelieving expression. A real one, he's said. A real one... A nice one, he'd continued in a much quieter voice. He remembered turning his head away, asking if that's who the younger teen had been spending all his time with. Aoi hadn't said much in return but Jay knew him well enough to know the answer.

It was five months later, and Aoi was dead,
and Jay swore he'd find exactly what had killed him.

A stout woman of almost forty-five stood on the inside of Jay's room, tapping one foot with a frown to her lightly worn features. "Jayden Alexander, if I have to tell you one more time to get down from that balcony I swear your little tush will be grounded- And no, I don't care if you're an adult by your standards! If you want to live under my roof you'll obey my rules," she said in a less than harsh voice, watching with calm gray-blue eyes as the nineteen year old sighed and flopped down to the concrete floor of the overhang.

"Mm'sorry, mom. I won't do it again," the teen shrugged a bit as he glanced at the woman. Brown eyes dropped to the ground as his mother's eyes softened a bit. "Jay, are you okay? You friends... they've been wondering why you haven't been meeting with them anymore. Honey, I know...things have been hard but someday you're going to have to continue with your life. If you want to talk to someone again, I-"

Jay shook his head a bit, "I'm- I'm not going to lie and say I'm perfect, but I need to work things out for myself before I go talking to some person about it again. I need to work this out on my own," he murmured, looking up with a weak smile. "Thanks, though. I think I'm going to head out actually... maybe meet up with some people for a movie," he added with a brighter grin. He hated lying to his mom, but he couldn't exactly tell her he was trying to find the shadow of Aoi. One, there was the fact that his mother (and supposedly he, himself) did not believe the creatures even existed... and two... she'd surely send him off to some shrink if she knew how much Aoi had been on his mind lately. Not that he minded talking to other people about it- it helped sometimes- but right now he needed closure and that was something only he could do.

Closing the glass sliding door with a light swish noise, Jay smiled a bit once more before waving, "I'll call you later," he murmured before heading downstairs and outside.

The mother sighed as she locked the balcony door, staring outside at the street, watching her little boy wander down the road, hugging the sidewalks. She truly hoped her Jay was okay...

Ilan sighed softly, rubbing at his eyes out of pure exhaustion. Another day of therapy had come to a close and he was (finally) free to go. He hated this. He really did. As if he didn't think of Espen enough already -- but now he had to go to therapy sessions and talk about his feelings. Ilan was depressed as hell -- and how could he possibly not be?! -- and the therapy sessions only pissed him off. Needless to say, the teen was not at all happy at this stage in his life.

As Ilan exited the large building and began to sift in through the other various pedestians, his hand reflexively reached for his pockets, where a box of cigarrettes likely would have been a little over a month ago. However, the motion was stopped before it was ever completed for, as he quickly remembered, there would be no box there. After the incedent, he had sworn off all drugs -- not just alcohol and the illegal stuff, but cigs too. After all... if he hadn't been so drunk, Espen (probably) wouldn't have died.

He scowled as that thought crossed his mind. He thought it often enough... and it only ever made him feel incresingly worse each time he did.

Jay shoved his hands into his pockets, pulling out a note with a frown, his expression bordering on sadness for a moment before hardening to something more numb. Aoi had told him all about where to find the supposed shadows.Jay wasn't sure if it was the sickness or whatever the heck had killed Aoi working on his mind that made him ramble on about darkness during his last days...or if those shadows had truly been real.

If they were, then Jay would like to find one in particular...

Stuffing the note back into his pocket, the young man took a turn down an alley, leaning against the scratchy, red brick of a building. If they were real, he'd find him and then he'd ask what he'd done to Aoi...and if he'd seen the boy at all.

There only ever seemed to be one thing that relieved Ilan of his misery - or at least of part of it, for how could that mass depression ever truly leave his heart? And so, hands stuffed in his pockets, he headed off in the general direction of any place dirty, grimy and filled with no-goods. True, Ilan was a "well-rounded" boy from a "good family," but he wasn't good. As with all twins, one was good... and one was bad. He had always supposed that Espen was the good one - and he had told him so many times. Espen had laughed and waved away the other's words, telling him that such nonsense was only told by those who craved the sort of bonds that twins had without even trying. He had said that no one could really understand how close they could be to someone unless they were twins.

And Ilan had believed him... until one month ago. And so Ilan, self-proclaimed "bad twin," made his way to the bad side of town. Maybe he could pick a fight or something and get his mind off of all the depressing sh*t.

[[Time skip! @w@]]

Brown eyes whisked listlessly across the large white board, flickering from side to side in a very disinterested manner. School had never been some awesome experience for Jay and after... Aoi had died the teen didn't know why he bothered showing up to classes anymore. The professor was saying something about bacteria, boring micro-organism stuff that Jay didn't really care about at all. After forty-two and half grueling minutes, the class ended and everyone was allowed to take a break for the time being, or head off for another class, depending upon their schedules. The nineteen year old was thankfully free until much later in the day.

Keeping a steady grip on his biology book, the teen sighed as he slipped out of the classroom only to a spot a scene that made his day depressing as hell. Scratching back a few locks of brown hair, the teen swerved out of the way of a couple chattering girls as he focused in on a small group of rather immature students. They were the very epitome of first years, thinking they were the biggest hot shots ever to set foot on campus simply because they had passed out of high school, and with their intellect Jay figured that each and every member of the group just barely passed. The young man wasn't sure if he should really interfere with them, he didn't want his mom asking how he got a black eye or something... yet, he didn't think it was right for them to be picking on a kid, must've been a first year as well with how tiny the boy looked...

[[Jay's just as his oh so wonderful school [/sarcasm]. ]]

------ - - - - ----- -- - - - -- -- --- - - - -

Blue eyes widened considerably as a black, misty-sort of substance retracted shockingly against the glass test tube. "Hey, hey something's-" A grey-eyed scientist rushed over, examining the reaction with a thoughtful frown.

"Do you know what it means?" The younger one asked as he handed the test tube to the other with a curious pout. The younger soon-to-be-full-fledged-scientist was only allowed to run tests, but he never knew exactly what Traye was having him do, unless he told him of course... which he usually did, but wouldn't it save a lot of questions if he just told him out right what they were doing? What they were looking for?

He'd asked Traye once why, and the older researcher gave him a wry grin before explaining in some silly voice that all of Jin's questions helped him think things through easier, or something along those lines. It hadn't made much sense but that was Mr. Traye Locklen for you... The blue-eyed assistant snatched back the test tube before swirling it's contents a bit more, "What exactly is this substance, anyway?" he asked before flinching as Traye raked a gloved hand through dark red hair.

"You just wasted a glove," Jin said with a frown, not quite happy that the scientist had not answered any of his questions. Traye shrugged before taking off both gloves, slapping them down on the, more or less, pristine white counter-top with a thwack.

"Do you want to see what I took that chemical from?"

It took a few minutes to get into the locked area of the chemical cabinet, the most dangerous part in the entire lab as they joked about. Unfortunately their little joke was completely true. With so many chemicals in one area if something were to ever go wrong Traye said that he highly doubted anything in a mile radius would be left alive. Shaking away his nerves, Jin followed the older man closely until they reached the bottom-most part of the lab. It was dark, but there were certainly lights and Jin automatically turned to switch them on but stopped as the dark-eyed man caught his wrist.

"Don't."

Jin bit back a yelp as he stared suspiciously at the researcher.

"Oh, please, Jin. You've been working here for almost a year, you'd think you'd trust me by now. Believe me, if I were going to rape you it wouldn't be here." He had said it in such a way that gave Jin a very...weird feeling, he supposed since he was going to be a scientist soon he'd have to dissect that feeling sooner or later and find out just what it was, but not now of course...
"That's a comforting thought."
"I figured it'd be, now stop being stupid and come 'ere."

Traye kneeled down, tugging the twenty-something year old down with him. Opening a locked, plastic case, the researcher grinned as he lifted the semi-clear lid.

"What is that?!"

[[I'll add Mister Traye and Jin's profiles...err...soon. > >;]]

"How did you get those scars, hmm?" on of the boys asked, reaching forward to run a thick finger along one very prominent scar along Ilan's left cheek. The pale boy flinched, his golden eyes narrowing as the boys laughed in recognition of his jumpy reflexes.

"Twitchy little bug, aren't you? Come one, we're not bad guy," the boy grinned, tossing his head back slightly to show just how inferior Ilan was compared to himself.

Ilan scowled, but didn't say anything, leeping his eyes glued down to the floor. His hands were balled into fists -- he could barely keep his temper in, but... but he had to! He didn't want... anything bad to happen -- what if he killed someone again? So instead of retorting, as he would have easily done only little more than a month ago, he held back his scathing words, biting his lips to keep himself from speaking.

"Do ya see his eyes? Do ya seem 'em?" One boy jibed, peering down into eerie golden-hazel eyes. Yanking the teen's chin upwards in a none too gentle manner, the same boy turned Ilan's head forcefully in the direction of the others. "Looks like a little shadow, doesn't he?"

The rest of the crew laughed for a while before truly looking into the teen's eyes. "Eh, that's sort of creepy now that you mention it," another one of them murmured, taking a step backwards. "You heard about what happened, right? After that party..." He took another step, the others nodding a bit before following suit. The teen holding Ilan's head affixed glared at the other boys. "Are you serious? You're not scared of a little wimp like him? You're twice his size," he muttered in an almost disgusted tone, talking about the lightly disfigured teen as if he was clearly out of their presence.

Jay ground his teeth together sharply, grasping the instigator's hand in a tight grip, pressing down into his wrist until he freed the teen from any sort of hold. Jay wasn't usually someone who got into other people's businesses but he hated seeing kids get picked on... The others piped up fiercely at this, hurling seemingly hurtful insults at the older teen. "Just 'cause you're older doesn't mean you can go around and do stuff like that!"

The brown-eyed male rolled his eyes as he shoved the younger teen's wrists away from him, about to turn away. He was ready to go back home for a few hours, think about things and then come back for his next class, but that goddamn Nick kid, whatever his name was had to say something... He just had to say it. "He's jus' sticking up for him 'cause he like's im, right? Haha! He's just like that stupid little freshmen, what was his name? He died a little while back and I bet he reminds-"

Jay had stopped listening. How could they...How could they talk about Aoi that way? About someone...s-someone who had died- and...

"He was such a stupid little fruit, I'm glad he died," Nick muttered to his crew before waving at Jay and giving a snide wink at Ilan. "Nice talkin' with you, Jay. We should do it more often."

Not so far away from the scene, Lucian looked as if he had just been finishing some math work before stuffing the book back into his messenger bag. Now to sit back and enjoy the afternoon in peace until his next classes, he thought, doing just that. That is, until he opened his eyes and was greeted with the sight of several boys surrounding a smaller, dark-haired youth.

He sighed, just watching the group for the moment, occasionally eyeing those around them. Was no one going to interfere? he wondered. Several people were just ignoring the bullying going on right in front of them, while those who were watching looked amused. Right. Why should anyone bother anyway? Afterall, it wasn't there problem. But just as he thought this, he noticed another boy he recognized as Jay approach.

It's about time, he thought, feeling a sort of relief wash over him when the group left. At that point, he almost wanted to hit himself. He wasn't any better than the others who had been watching. Acting as if it was just some sort of drama on TV, wondering 'What will happen next?' and 'Oh, I do hate that character.'

He should say something. Anything. It would make himself feel better, at least. So, taking up his bag and hefting it on to his shoulder, he manuevered his way to Jay and Ilan. "Don't worry about that one," he said. "Nick gets off by hurting others."
