Wikipedia
A girl gamer is a female who:

-Works in the game development industry, or
-Regularly engages in the practice of playing video games, role-playing games, or other games (colloquially referred to as "gaming"). This can be from the most casual interest to the most serious professional gaming, where female players often draw extra attention due to their rarity.

The role of women in the games industry -- as professionals and as consumers -- has received extensive academic and business attention because women represent approximately half the population but buy a small share of all video games[citation needed]. Finding the reasons for (and potentially changing) this demographic drives most of the research and professional initiatives in this field.

The great majority of the people who work on game development teams are men, particularly in the technical fields such as programming. Various reasons for this have been debated (see external references below), but some companies have made a concerted effort to recruit more women to create more balanced teams. The motivation behind these efforts is sometimes ethical, sometimes culture-based, and sometimes based on the desire to create games that will appeal more broadly to both men and women.

The average age of game buyers has moved from the late teens to the late twenties from 1995 to 2005 and household penetration of game systems has grown dramatically. Along with these changes has also come a rise in female consumers. All of these factors have increased the financial stakes in video game sales, and focused even more attention on the remaining untapped female gaming market.

In recognition of the importance of this issue, the IGDA (an association of companies and individuals in the games industry) has formed a SIG on Women in Game Development.

This is a very active field of discussion and the topic of dedicated conferences. A browser search on the words women games conference will produce a list of recent and upcoming events.

According to a study conducted by the Entertainment Software Association in 2005, women now comprise 43% of all gamers. Despite this large and growing number, many gaming companies and also many gamers fail to accept and acknowledge females as gamers and as consumers or employees in the gaming industry.

Now, I'm pretty sure all of us here know what a female gamer is.

But it was really the last line that drove me to post this here.

"According to a study conducted by the Entertainment Software Association in 2005, women now comprise 43% of all gamers. Us Girl Gamers currently compromise 43% of the gaming generation.
Let those unaccepting boy Gamers take that and drive it through town.

True, but probably 20% of that 43% probably only play stuff like the Sims and other such games.
The girls that enjoy a broader spectrum of games are the ones the game industries should be worried about.

Its freaking Wikipedia. Personally I'd take those statistics with a few grains of salt.

And how many guys only play the latest FIFA or NBA game?
True, as it's Wikipedia it can't be considered completely reliable, but that goes for all statistics, including the ones about boy gamers.

It's funny that there is a definition for a girl gamer. I always thought the term gamer was neuter. Not that English has a neuter...

The only statistics that I have that I can truely believe are from PBS, who did a survey in 2006. read carefully Ok 90% of Males play video games and 40% of girls play video games.

Thats about as close as a good statistic your going to get. They'd need to do a more in depth one to find out which girls play what. Because really a major percentage of gamers are little kids playing pokemon games and other small kids games. Kinda how like no one could believe TMNT beat 300 in the box office. And what i mean by kid are like from 6-12 those ages tend to be the most in population so if only 50% of that age group bought games they could still be more than the age group of lets say 14-21

Well said! It's like- "You don't like that I'm a gamer? Then screw you!"

I never liked how people always give statistics to things like this. You shouldn't like or dislike something just because the statistics say you're in the majority or minority.

I wouldn't trust any of the statistics on Wikipedia, since anyone can make them up unless there is a specific cited source (preferably with a non-Wikipedia link).

Otherwise, I think it's funny, and a little sad, that there's a definition for girl gamer. If anything, it should be "a female that plays games". No more, no less. Life doesn't have to be that complicated to have a 1000 word essay on what signifies a girl gamer.
