 The dead tree still lay where it had fallen who knows how long ago, though the various numa that came across it still found uses for it. One numa in particular came back many times to the quiet spot not far from the great grape soda river that bubbled merrily as it rushed along.
Midday found Fiara, the midnight colored female, leaning against the horizontal trunk, smoking and humming to herself. No, she had not picked up a disgusting habit that required an almost constant intake of nicotine. Instead, this smoke emanated from her thin form and drifted lazily about her body, mixing with the smoke of burning wood. A small fire that she had started intentionally was burning itself out at her feet and she stared into the flames with silver sheen eyes. Along the trunk were blackened patches and Fiara herself seemed more scorched than she had been in her puphood, with scarred patches on her arms and legs where the fur was matted and stiff.
At last when the fire had died out and what was left would be perfect for grilling over, if she was interested in eating anything at this time, Fiara shifted and tilted her head back to stare at the deepening blue sky through the canopy of trees. The wordless tune faded away and she curled her now constantly fiery right paw in her lap, making a conscious effort to keep it away from the highly flammable bits in her vicinity. By now, it was late in the afternoon and she contemplated heading for home but she made no effort to actually head there.

Ashe smiled widely, revealing her sharpened front teeth. It was a remarkable change, this growing into an adult. She was very different from what she had been.
Walking through the forest, the significantly taller, more muscular and suddenly given the ability to fly female was in her element. She loved the forest, with it's candy vines and tall lollipop trees. She'd rather be in the forest then in the sky any day. With a chuckle and a stroke of her constant companion, Coatl, she made her way through the forest, far off the original path. She knew this place like the back of her or so the expression went.
Coatl hissed and wound his way about her body, often chosing to reside on her head and neck like he had when she was younger, then cling to her arm. She laughed as his soft prange-red tail tickled here, "Husssh, love," She whispered, her accent and natural tendency to hiss and "kweh" very much alive.

After a handful of minutes had passed, Fiara stood and stretched raising her arms above her head yawning widely, she had to dampen the hot coals with soda from the river and use a stick to stir the wet ashes, to make sure it was completely out, she had held no power over the camp fire. Fiara had learned that once the flames caught something else, once the fire had left her body it became as any other fire and effected her the same any other fire would; singeing and scorching, burning if she didn't get away fast enough. But she didn't feel pain from the flames, the only sign of her mishaps were the greyed patches that were here and there on her body and her eye that she could no longer see quite as well from.
The accident that marred her face was the most embarrassing one, the one she tired to hide, the others were no big deal to her. With long bangs covering her left eye Fiara began to wander home, she was not in the mood for flying in the trees, so she walked and began to hum again, that wordless tune.

Ashe laughed softly as she danced through the forest, somehow avoiding snagging herself on the branches, brambles, bush and everything else that should have caught her. She paused however, as she caught the scent of something burning. The scent of burned fur.
She had encountered that scent before. Once before, when she had first met the midnight pup. Tilting her head to the side, curious as to if it really was the friend she hadn't seen in ages.
Picking up her pace, the snake numa wove through the trees, the faintest traces of a smile forming over her lips. It would be good to see her friend again. She wanted to see how her friend had changed and share so many things with her. She really felt that she and Fiara could be very good friends.

Head down Fiara moved through the trees, she knew where she was heading and had no need to look up to often because she had beat this path many times and could find her way easily through. Still she went slowly lifting her tail and folding her wings to keep them from becoming tangled in anything, when she felt a presence. This part of the wood was usually empty, one of the reasons she had chosen it to experiment in, the other being that the fallen tree made a wonderful test subject.
Turning she lifted her head and looked about with widened eyes, "Who's there?" She called, her soft nocturne-like voice calm and not displaying any of the melancholy that she felt.

Ashe's long ears flicked forward, catching the soft sounds of movement akin to her own. She slowed a bit, so as not to scare her old friend, though why she would be scared of her was beyond her. She brushed past a few more bushes and small trees and finally came upon the midnight female.
"Fiara!" She exclaimed, wanting to run up and embrace her friend, but holding back. While her family may encourage such actions, she had learned that others did not and so she kept her distance for the time being. "Fiara! I haven't kweh ssseen you in agesss!" She laughed, "How have you kweh been?"

A true smile split Fiara's face when she recognized the familiar if more mature voice that belonged to her snakey friend. Fiara rushed, backtracking a bit through the trees until she was before Ashe, the urge to hug her was thrown back and forth in Fiara's head for a moment until it won over and she threw her arms around the other female and dropped her voice, "I've been better, I've been worse." She pulled back, "Oh it's so good to see you again Ashe, Coatl, still hangin in there." Fi reached her left paw to tickle the little winged snake under his chin. Fiara moved her right hand from Ashe and tucked it against herself, the warm sensation that the fire gave was not unpleasant but she didn't know if the other girl would mind it or no.
Bangs still hanging in her face, smile still lifting her cheeks and twinkling in her eyes Fiara took a single step back, "How have you been? Staying out of trouble?" Fiara giggled a sound that had not escaped her lips in many many days now bubbled forth. Though her troubles still hid in her mind, seeing Ashe again made Fiara feel that a weight had been lifted from her.

"Ah!" Squeaked Ashe as she suddenly found herself in the embrace of her friend, "Fiara!" she laughed, wrapping her arms around her friend until she pulled back. "It'ssss been a kweh long time sssince we've talked," She began, and paused, not entirely sure how to proceed, "Coatl and I have kweh been a bit bussy," She couldn't help her lip curling, "I kweh have a "boyfriend" now," She made quotation motions with her fingers, "But kweh other then that nothing much," She sighed, running a paw through her green hair.
She tilted her head at Fiara, curious, "How kweh hasss my dear Fiara been? We have kweh much to catch up on," She glanced around for a spot where they could sit and chat for a bit. Seeing a perfect spot, under the shade of a lollipop tree, she held out a paw for her friend, "Let'sss kweh catch up of there. It lookss kweh rather comfortable, don't you think?"

"Yes, let's." Fiara took Ashe's paw and when they were sitting Fiara couldn't help but giggle again, her friend's story was much more fun than her own, she admitted what she knew.
"I have to admit when I heard from Zenith that you were his girlfriend I pounced on him and held him down to get the full story, well I attempted to hold him down, it was more of a wrestling contest, but he told me it started as a fight and ended in this bet. I know you both don't agree on many things but I hope it ends well for the both of you. I can't root for one or the other because you are my friend and he is my brother... He's a good guy really." Fiara finished lamely, not knowing what else to say on the subject.
"As for me," she indicated the scorch marks along her limbs, still hiding as best she could the one marring half her face. "I'm learning more about myself day-by-day." She hoped that she didn't reek of burnt hair. "I've been keeping to myself a little too much these days and so I haven't seen anyone but family recently."

Ashe blinked and stared at Fiara, "Zenith issss your kweh brother?" She exclaimed, utterly surprised. They looked almost nothing alike, he of flame and her of night. "Wow..." She managed to say, though she was still working through this new development.
She blinked again and pressed her ears backward, not very happy anymore, "Ha, well, I can kweh tell you he hassssn't done anything to win my kweh heart yet," She grumbled and rolled her yellow eyes, "You'd think he'd kweh at leasssst try ssssomething romantic, you kweh know?" She shook her head, "Nope! Not a kweh ssssingle thing! It's assss if he kweh thinkssss hisss mere pressssence will kweh make me swoon!" She shook her head, disbelief evident in her voice. She shrugged finally, "At thisss rate kweh neither of ussss will win the kweh bet." She ran a paw through her hair and allowed her friend to change the subject.
Ashe smiled kindly, "Ah! Ssso you kweh took my advice then?" She asked, reaching out the cup an arm gently, avoiding touching the scorch marks except gently, "You have kweh been learning a lot I kweh ssssee."

"Yes," Fiara answered, adding "I have another brother too, Jayce." She took this moment to inquire about her siblings though she remembered from the previous encounter that she did not see much of Lore. "How about you, does Ashe have other siblings?"
Fiara had to laugh at what Ashe said, "Yes, that sounds like Zenith in a nutshell." Fiara was at a loss, she knew her brother's flirtatious nature but wasn't like him in that aspect, she wondered and spoke in the next instant. "Have you - umm - tried anything romantic, to win that is?" With only the romance of their fathers to go by Fiara didn't know where Ze had gotten his material from nor did she didn't have the urge to flirt with every male she met and so he was a mystery to her in that respect.
Fiara allowed Ashe to inspect her arm slightly embarrassed at the marks. "I did and I have and I think that I'm not going to push any farther." She flicked at some matted fur and wondered if Ashe was interested in to know, "It doesn't hurt at all, not now, not when it happens either. I don't feel heat with this paw," lifting the right one and watching with learned respect the flames that leaped and danced, "and my own fire doesn't burn me, it feels warm and nice." She brought up her left paw and moved it through the fire like one would tease a candle flicker. "I can control it if I think about it" Fiara continued, "I'm getting better at it, but the fire lights other things, things that are really flammable, even if I don't want it too."

Ashe tilted her head to the side, smiling slightly at the memories, "Yesss..." She murmured, " I have kweh three ssiblingss." She laughed softly, "Two brothersss, Naoki and kweh Lore, and a ssissster, Vassshti, kweh." Her smile faltered a bit, "We don't kweh sssee each other very often."
Her ears flattened against her skull, "Oh, kweh, great," She rumbled, mood slipping a bit. She blinked and focused on her friend's words, "Oh..." She sighed, wrinkling her nose in mild disdain, "I kweh have not tried anything." She shrugged, "I have had kweh neither the opportunity or the desssire for kweh sssuch." She ran a paw through her hair, eyes half-lidded, "I sssimply kweh want thisss over." She shook her head, "Asss of kweh now, neither of usss isss kweh looking to win."
Ashe ran paw-like fingers over the scarred patches, inspecting everything, "Ah, I kweh ssssee." Yellow eyes, glanced up, "If that isss kweh what you think isss bessst," She answered solumnly. She tilted her head to the side and listened, nodding every once in a while, "Ah, you kweh have ssspecial talentsss assss kweh well?" She answered softly. She smiled widely, revealing her long fangs. Thesssse," She pointed at them, "Have poissson in them, can you kweh believe that?" She laughed softly, "And I can kweh measssure the exact kweh amount I'd like to kweh inject into sssomeone." She smiled gently, "I can't kweh alwaysss control myssself either, Fiara," She pointed out, "We each kweh have our own abilities and weaknesssesss." She smiled, "Sssso it isss kweh natural for usss to not control them well," A galnce at her snake companion, "We are kweh alwaysss learning."

Fiara smiled sadly and nodded, unsure of what else to say to comfort Ashe, it must be hard on her to not have her siblings close, Fi thought.
"Maybe you should just call the bet then," Fiara offered, she didn't think much of it in the first place, she only wished that her brother and Ashe didn't fight so, if they got along that would be for the better but she knew that sometimes numa just didn't get along, thinking of her other brother... "I'm sure that Zenith won't 'cheat' on you, but if it's not going well, finish it?"
As for pushing her powers Fiara did think that letting herself just discover what else she could and couldn't do as time passed was best, she didn't want to risk herself any longer. "I wouldn't call it a talent," the she tilted her head and looked more closely at Ashe's fangs with wide eyes, "wow" she murmured, "but, how have you tested it?" Fiara's first thought was concern for safety and again her littler brother was in her mind. She understood what Ashe said about control and nodded in agreement but a distressed expression still marred her maw.

Ashe shook her head, "No, we kweh or at leassst I cannot kweh do that," She answered, running another paw through her light green hair, "I am kweh both to ssstubborn and desssire for him to learn the kweh error of hisss waysss to kweh back out on ssssomething like kweh thisss." She sighed softly, and smiled, "No, I'll kweh ssstick it out," She winked at her starred friend, "Perhapsss I can kweh make it interessssting before it kweh endsss." The mischievious smile on her lips certainly whispered of ideas that didn't exactly bode well for the flame-colored boy.
Her ears flicked forwards and backwards as she thought, "Mm...thesssse?" She shrugged, "I kweh used this type of kweh fruit. Apparently it kweh issss enough like animalssss to kweh mimic them. I trained from kweh that." She shrugged, dismissing it a bit in favor of concern over her friends expression, "I'm kweh guesssing I'm not kweh being very helpful here, am I?" She asked, smiling a bit ruefully.

"Ah, no, don't take it that way. It always helps to have someone to listen." She lowered her eyes, "I worry too much - about others getting hurt. I can't feel my own self inflicted damage, so it's easier to worry about other pain." Fiara sat hunched, legs drawn up to her chest, she ran her right paw through her bangs, combing them with her fingers, concealing the scar across her face. "Even if I had known about this fruit I still would have these scars, but in a way I don't regret them, I did learn a lot, I think."
She raised her eyes to Ashe, "So you and Ze will both learn something from this in the end." Fiara knew enough about her brother to be sure that he would not have an urge to end the bet before it was played out. She wondered what the green femme had in store but then if she knew, could she keep it from Zenith? Fiara opened her mouth to ask something of Ashe when her stomach gurgled loudly cutting off any words that she was forming, Fiara clamped a paw to her mouth and looked highly embarrassed as she realized that it had been morning when she ate last.
