Here is how Wikipedia describes meditation: Quote: Meditation usually refers to a state of extreme relaxation and concentration, in which the body is generally at rest and the mind quieted of surface thoughts. Several major religions include ritual meditation; however, meditation itself need not be a religious or spiritual activity. Most of the more popular systems of meditation are of Eastern origin. Another form of meditation is more closely akin to prayer and worship, wherein the practitioner turns spiritual thoughts over in the mind and engages the brain in higher thinking processes. The goal in this case is the receipt of spiritual insights and new understanding. From the point of view of psychology, meditation can induce — or is itself — an altered state of consciousness. Perhaps some of you interpret meditation in your own way. In any case, does anybody else here practice meditation, in one form or another? If so, why? If not, why not?

Meditation is used as many things for me. I meditate to get in touch with my soul/spiritual side of my being, listen to my guides, my teachers, and to get insight on my life. Meditation is a powerful tool in my eyes. Its soothing and helps my headaches sometimes too. I've had those since the 3rd grade, but meditation only within the last year.
I like meditation... Alot. biggrin

I meditate as a part of every spell I perform. Which isn't many. Though I also meditate as a form of protection... for personal reasons, which I won't really get into here.

It's certainly good for stress relief, and all kinds of things. I'm just interested to see what people seek from meditation, since it can be used to achieve all kinds of things. And, for the people who don't meditate, I wonder why it's never appealed to them.

my life pretty much depends on meditation. i use whenever i need to get in touch with myself, when i need to talk to my guides and when my abilities are acting up. i use it to releave stress, and relax my body. it helps me focus for tests, and helps my take in what is going on around me. so like i said, my life pretty much depends on meitation 3nodding

Something I wish I was good at, for a start.
I guess Meditation would be something that improves one concentration and disaplines you at the same time.

Meditation I use different ideals for different purposes.
When my energies are in crazy bits I focus on calming everything and making myself focus them to a balance.
When my brain is going a mile a minute and going nowhere, I try to clear my mind with meditation.
When I just need someone to talk to, my totems aren't far off and I focus on contacting them.
Basically, I meditate as I see the need. Each purpose has a unique form, though usually I find a quiet room and put on one of my favored incence scents. Then I spend the time focusing on what my goal is.
I've only started meditating seriously lately, but I find it useful.

I personally see prayer as a form of meditation. To me, meditation is any thought that takes some degree as concentration. Under this definition, every single religion in the world uses meditation, and that is exactly what I believe. Now, as for the "deeper thought" meditation that most people here are refereing to, I do this at least once or twice a day, for varying reasons, including all the reasons mentioned here already. To me personally, meditation is the art of focusing your mind, and with much practise, much power can be unlocked.

I don't necessarily adhere to this definition, but I thought it was interesting and worth sharing.

But then again, maybe it's one of those sort of things that just can't be given a clear-cut definition. Afterall, "magic" is a perfect example. To Pagans, magic is using willpower to effect change. Under this definition, transubstansiation (turning bread and water into the body and blood of Christ in the Catholic Church) can be seen as an act of magic. Catholics however would refer to it as a form of prayer (one of their most sacred). And many people view prayer as meditation. The question then becomes "What is the difference between magic and meditation?" They're all connected. Perhaps one may even go as far as to say they're all part of the same thing.
