Who: Guang YingXiong & Jia YaHuo
What: A casual meeting.
Where: the main tank.
When: About now, the start of the RP. Nighttime.
Why: um... to meet?

A lone lantern beta female swam alone away from the potkey she & her tankmates used to travel between their tank and the much larger main tank. Sharp eyes glanced in the direction of her tankmate's new home with her "not-quite-a-mate" and their children before a shake of her warmly glowing head delayed that idea and she swam off in a completely different direction.

Jia YaHuo had decided to search alone this night. It was perhaps one thing she and her foster mother did not share. Elanorriel was more a daughter of the light, loving the sun and the daytime. Jia, making her own light, tended to be partial to the night. She loved the silence that came when the others of her tank were asleep -when even Gaebor and his fairy were silent.

Never before had she ventured to the main tank on her own however. bright eyes watched the suroundings lit by her light to memorize them so that she could remember the way back home. Jia would not leave something that important to fate.

A soft smile lit her fce as she came across an intricate series of coral that seemed to glow purple under her light. Perhaps she could play here a while where no one was likely to see her. With a small giggle she swam into the maze-like structure, dipping & bobbing midst the arms and branches as if dancing with them -elegant & graceful even in play.

Nothingness. Nonexistence. Existence. Sound. Movement. Light.

The triple-tailed lantern Beta emerged from his brief meditation as he became aware of a soft light indicating the presence of another being. He took a deep, centered breath before leaving his place in the hollow of a rock nearby the reef that another Beta seemed to have turned into her coral playground.

Guang YingXiong watched as the female lantern Beta swam in and out of the labyrinth of purple coral, smiling appreciatively at the fluid movements with which she navigated the curves and angles. He approached the reef and, estimating her next exit, positioned himself just above so as to be able to greet her with his own light.

A slight gasp, barely audible, escaped Jia YaHuo as she rounded a bend to exit the coral through a particularly nice spot to see the warm glow of a light other than her own. She could not stop fully without running the chance of swimming into the coral, but the lantern female could slow down somewhat.

Her eyes lowered demurely seeing the glow came from a male who could only be a lantern beta like her. Her cheeks felt a little warm to be caught playing, but thankfully her already red scales and her own natural glow should hide most of that from showing. "I... did not realize anyone else was around." She offered in apology, wondering if she had somehow disturbed the male with her nighttime excursion. She dipped her head politely. "I am called Jia YaHuo."

YingXiong smiled warmly at the female lantern Beta. "I came here to find a peaceful place away from the distractions of my tankmates for just a moment. I apologize for my rudeness in interrupting your own leisure. It was, if you would forgive the further boldness, an honor and great pleasure to observe your diversion."

He bowed in return at the offer of her name and introduced himself. "I am honored to make your acquaintance, Jia YaHuo. I am called Guang YingXiong, though you may call me Ying."

Her eyes flicked up, a flash of embarrassment in their golden brown depths before she offered an almost shy smile. "Oh? You saw that, did you?" Perhaps it was a little bold, but Jia found she liked what he said. Her tail folded against her side as if the lantern female was attempting to hide behind it. "I suppose we all need time away from tankmates once in a while. But... I am glad it pleased you..."

And even more glad that her red coloring hid her blush. It was so unladylike of her. Elanorriel would never blush as she was doing. But then her foster mother would never caper through the coral like she had either. She shook her head. "It is not unproper for a male to be a little bold, and there was nothing rude in what you have done."

"You honor me in my ... leisure as you call it, Ying. It would please me for you call me Jia." The gold in her eyes sparkled briefly before her eyes demurely cast down once more.

((*sheepish* yeah... I suck at remembering the sur name comes first in Chinese when I named her... lala. She'll blame it on me if he asks. ^_^))

YingXiong would have gently raised the female Beta's head with a fin to put her at ease, but it was not his place to touch her without her permission. Giving a light chuckle, he lowered his head and tried to lift her gaze with his own, smiling reassuringly. "A lady of your grace is a precious jewel among humble pebbles. There is no reason for you to be ashamed."

He bowed again, saying, "As you wish, I am honored to do as you ask, Jia *Xiao Jie. If I may inquire, did Xiao Jie have another reason for leaving her own tank on an evening such as this?"

(( *Miss, lit. "young sister." ))

She let his eyes pull her gaze up, deciding that if Ying made the effort it was acceptable for her to accomodate that little bit. His compliments made her feel warm and his Chinese... it struck something in her that formed much of her being but that she knew little about. "Only a night swim... some time for solitude." Her smile was gentle. "There was something about this night that spoke to me. I am not often to leave my tank, particularly without chaperones."

"Indeed, a little solitude is good for the spirit, and the night is good for solitude," Ying agreed, nodding, but he looked surprised at her mention of chaperones. "Forgive me if I have made you uneasy. It is my humble opinion, however, that while it is true there is safety in numbers, a lady who is capable of handling her own affairs is like the willow tree, whose branches are blown this way and that by the wind, but is never overcome." Bowing once again, he said, "I apologize if I am being too forward. If you should wish it, I will remove myself."

"Yes... yes it is." Jia wondered at his surprise, then shook her head ever so slightly. "You have been nothing but kind & courteous, Ying." The way he spoke enthralled her, and she found herself wishing she could be half as eloquent. "I shall have to see if I can be like the willow, and be so capable. Until tonight I have been content to remain within the watchful eyes of those that saw to my upbringing. But perhaps this is the start of something new." Her tail flicked the slightest bit, keeping her moving so that the water could filter through her gills. Otherwise she remained in place. Although perhaps lacking a bit in her Chinese heritage Jia had none-the-less been raised with a distinct sense of decorum.

"I do not wish you to leave." The female added softly, perhaps with a hint of surprise before smiling gently once more.

If Betas had any sort of prominent brows, Ying's would certainly have expressed his relief. It would have been a shame to part from this elegant, gentle lady who seemed to have engaged his interest entirely in the short time since their introduction. Perhaps the fact that she was a fresh face had been the initial reason for his attraction to her, but there was something in her demure manner that truly intrigued him.

"I am glad to share in your company," Ying said with another bow to express his gratefulness, "and I am blessed to also share in this new experience. I hope-" Here he paused, looking into her eyes with the utmost respect. "I hope that our acquaintance provides opportunity for many more experiences of this pleasant kind."

Although he had not meant anything further than friendship, had it not been for the meditation he had just concluded, Ying would have found it much more difficult to conceal his sudden blush. The words had come out more suggestive than he had intended, and he was embarrassed that he had not caught them in time to rephrase them more agreeably. Hoping that Jia would have the grace not to notice the possibility of other meanings in his words, he decided to let them go and speak no further.

On her own, guided by Elanorriel & Aman she would never have caught the suggestive other meaning of Ying's words... but Himgûl & Yunalesca were part of her tank too. And they had a decidedly less proper preference for things. Still, she could not believe that this clearly polite & distinguished male intended that interpretation so she would ignore it. But what if he had inadvertently meant it? A subconscious thing? Could he be attracted to her?

Jia YaHuo pushed such thoughts from her mind. They were neither dignified nor proper. Certainly not on a first meeting. But she felt a warm glow inside of her regardless, and it showed a little in a slightly brighter glow around her body. "I would hope that as well, and I would enjoy very much to have the chance to continue our acquaintance."

There was all of time ahead to become friends -or to see if there was more should that be what Guang YingXiong wanted. It was too soon for Jia to know what she might want, other than a friend. She gave the male lantern beta a warm but demure smile. "If it is not too forward of me to ask, what was it you were doing here, while getting away from the distractions of your tankmates, that I must have interrupted?"

"Ah," said Ying, calming his glow further, "I was meditating." He inhaled slowly until he was sure that his outward appearance might show no sign of any inner turmoil, then smiled and released the breath slowly enough that it did not bubble. "Every so often, I come out to this place to find some peace. Meditation is useful for many things. It helps me to clear my mind of distractions, like those of my tankmates, to purify me of negative energy, or sometimes to center my thoughts on something I ought to be doing. It can even improve one's health and hasten recovery."

Ying sighed. "Or so I've been told," he smiled. "To be perfectly truthful, I'm new to the concept myself. I was taught it by my owner, who apparently learned it from someone else. Neither of us have quite the grasp of it that we might hope to have, but it seems to work well enough to calm me."

She tried not to stare while still watching the male's movements. The way he breathed and calmed intrigued Jia. Her head tilted the slightest bit, soaking in what he was explaining. It made sense. She herself alwasy found it easier to know her own mind without the audial influences of Himgûl, Gaebor & Yunalesca particularly, and sometimes Topanga when she was around -though the happy clownfish's banter was at least pleasant to hear. The self appointed tank guardians were seldom a bother. At least not to the properly obedient Jia.

The concept held much merit & interest for her. Jia's glow by now had receeded to its normal level & she was able to smile evenly with unfeigned sweetness. "Do you have much that must be cleared and purified?" Was that a slightly teasing thread in her quiry? Her eyes & voice softened. "Did you find the peace you saught?"

Eylids hid half of her eyes from view but she did not fully look away. Jia found that she was worried her playfulness here, at this time, might have kept Ying from finding his peace. And if he was just learning... that would make it harder, right?

Clearing one's head... that was similar to why she had been swimming as she had been. Perhaps that was her way of meditating, since Jia usually spent the day calm & thoughtful without much activity at all.

This time, the male lantern Beta felt a flash of warmth through his body, but it did not show in any change in his glow, for which he was thoroughly thankful. He decided to only answer Jia's second question. "I did," Ying said, thinking back to the complete tranquility he had felt just before he had noticed Jia sporting nearby.

YingXiong held on to this latter thought, remembering Jia's graceful, dance-like movements through the coral. His own eyes fell half shut, his tail and fins fanned out briefly in pleasant reminiscence, and he spoke through a serene smile. "After meditation, things seem so much more... pure." His eyes opened again and he continued, "The smallest pebble appears like a bright jewel; the faintest bubbling becomes crisp and clear music, and the water feels very clean. It makes enjoying beauty so much more exquisite."

Remembering upon this reflection that the coral was there, Ying turned to look at it with genuine interest. "What an intense color," he remarked, observing the way the combined lantern light played upon the purple reef to give it the impression of glowing.

"Yes, it is." Jia nodded thoughtfully, still thinking about what he had said about meditation and things seeming more pure afterwards. The idea of enjoying beauty being more exquisite appealed to her. Also... she wondered at why he had closed his eyes, seeming so happy for a moment there. Like a window into something personal that perhaps she should not have seen. The female lantern beta was surprised that Ying would relax so in her presense seeing how they had only just met and at the same time, she hoped there was something she could do to put him in that frame of mind again. He had looked so at peace.

"I've never seen coral quite this color before. There were so many shades of purple where my light hit while I was swimming through because of the entangling branches. I'd like to observe it more." She sounded a little chagrinned as if feeling now that she should have paid more attention to such things. "Perhaps... would you care to join me? I don't think our combined light will change the effect too much." And she felt at ease in his company. Jia found it was a nice feeling. With a fluid motion she held out a fin in a gesture that could be taken as permission to take her fin or simply to accompany her.
