User ImageA gigantic ball of angry fur and teeth. That was what was staring Alexander down at the moment. He had never before come face to face with such a creature, though he heard tales. Fish in mouth, Alexander’s eyes darted about, wondering what to do. Which response would suit this situation; fight or flight? He didn’t know how strong this other creature was, with its circular body and massive feet tipped in sharp claws. Its nose and ears looked small though, so maybe the senses were poor? Could it be outsmarted? Was it fast?

These were a few of the questions racing through the young wolf’s head as he clutched his catch and raised his hackles. Maybe looking tough would scare it away. Alexander tried his best to show ferocious teeth, but that only seemed to make the creature come closer! Backing up quickly and slightly lowering his tail, Alexander decided this must be a bear. He’d heard stories, but never imagined this.

The dark blue wolf noticed the bear’s pathetic nose sniffing in the direction of his fish. Oh! Alexander thought. That’s what it’s after. Suddenly, the massive bear lunged forward, reaching for the young wolf and fish. It was all Alexander could do to jump out of the way at the last second. The bear roared in frustration and Alexander caught a whiff of its rancid breath. Only a second after that did he decide to drop the fish and hightail it out of there.

Legs raced in a blur of black and blue fur, as far away as he could get. Alexander didn’t want to be anywhere near that bear again. As his stamina lessened, Alexander slowed to a fast trot, then a walk. His tongue rolled out and his sides heaved, panting. Alexander looked behind him for any sign of being followed. Luckily, there was none.

Kekarn lounged beneath the comforting shade of nearby pines. The springtime had sent its first blessing of warmth over the land, and while Kek enjoyed its light, he found himself exceptionally warm this afternoon. His winter coat had yet to shed for the summer, keeping the large wolf toasty-warm during most of the day.

Hot, compounded with the warm breezes of the woods, the thick scent of pollen in the air, and the chirruping song of nearby birds, Kek found himself dozing and drifting dangerously close to sleep. His head rested upon his forpaws, tail curled tight around his shadowed form, and his breathing was slow and steady. Moment by moment, his daydreams of past hunts became more and more a reality. . .

The chase, the pounding of hooves against the ground, his eyes only on the brown and white motteled flesh before him. The doe was fast, but not fast enough - snapping at her deadly hooves, he made the fatal blow with a bite to his neck; so real were his dreams he could taste the thick blood stain his muzzle and tongue, hear her gurgling breaths, feel her body fall and crash in to the ground while she dragged Kekarn with. . . He remembered packmates long since passed, could feel them around him, ripping open their treasured prize. . .

As he slipped closer in to his dreams, reality was quick to shred pleasant thoughts mercilessly to the side. An unfamiliar tumbling through the nearby woods caused his ears to p***k and focus on the sound. Doe, friends, and blood were quickly vanquished as two green eyes opened groggily to peer ahead of him.

Whatever was out there was sure making a little bit of noise. . . .

Focused on the sound, Kek stifled a yawn as he attempted to shake his drowziness away. Sleep could come later - for now, this new noise had his full attention. The sound had quieted, but movement and instinct told him he wasn't going to be alone for long. There was a chance the said creature could change its course and miss Kek completely. . . but . . .there was another chance that could put Kek dead on in the path of this curiousity.

Sleep forgotten, the wolf had a choice to make - flee or fight. Whatever was approaching could be a threat to his existance. If that were the case, Kek had but a moment to flee or attack, a small window of oppurtunity. Then again, the large male knew there was very little he had to fear. Not much made a full grown wolf its prey, and two leggers were rare to be found so deep within the woods. Therefor, Kek made his decision to stay hidden within the underbrush of the woods. The pine trees and nearby foliage helped him to blend in with his surroundings. The waterfall of shadows that painted him black also helped the violet wolf become a bit more natural in colour.

Unless Alexander (or any creature) was searching specifically for him, one could easily walk right on by.

Deadly silent, Kekarn waited, curiousity getting the better of him.

Sure enough, it didn't take long for a panting adolescent to trot through the woods. Kek watched for a moment, taking in as much information about the wolf as he could.

By size and shape, he wasn't quite full grown. There weren't enough scars to cover his body, and his paws and legs were still too large for his body. Heaving sides meant he HAD been running, either out of joy or from something Kek couldn't tell but really didn't care. He was most defintily a he, and the way he walked without hovering to the ground meant he had some sort of confidence. Some wolves were more broken than others, but from body language alone, Alexander didn't look to be the shattered sort.

Still, the only way to know for sure who he was dealing with was to talk. Oh, sure, Kek could stay silent and let Alexander walk right on past. or Kekarn could take it upon himself to slip away unnoticed. . . but where was the fun in that?

Shaking out his coat, the wolf gave a slightly more vocal yawn so the blue one understood he wasn't alone.

"A bit warm out for a run, don't you think?" He drawled lazily, peering out curiously at Alexander. His body language was easily confident, though not arrogant. His tail wagged back and forth behind him like a banner, though he was far too passive to be assertively dominant. No, no, Kek was too calm for those sorts of games - he was his own wolf, pack rules and dominance didn't apply right now. . .

Unelss, of course, Alexander decided to push them. Yes, yes, the wolf would leave it up to the blue one.

"I'd much prefer a nap myself." An easy, lop-sided smirk slowly crossed his features. The large wolf slowly slipped in to a stretch, front paws sliding out before him as he couldn't help but yawn a second time.

Sleep hadn't entirely been shaken from his body. . . . . yet.

Breathe, breathe, and breathe. That’s what Alexander’s brain was commanding him to do. His paws carried him in a slow circle, trying to cool his furred form off. He padded lightly on the terra, trying not to make a sound – in case he was in fact being followed. Alexander wondered how a creature of those proportions could choose to eat a fish instead of a wolf like himself. Fish sometimes didn’t even satiate his own hunger, much less a bear’s. Oh well, maybe it had just been greedy and wanted a snack.

Alexander’s tongue lolled out the side of his mouth, curling and uncurling in time with his breaths. Just when he was starting to calm down, there was a noise and a movement. The young wolf’s body started, knowing the bear had returned to finish him off. When he finally faced the other wolf, Alexander immediately relaxed, trying to hide his surprise. The blue wolf sniffed the air in the newcomer’s direction and got a good look at him. This wolf was probably the largest he’d ever come in contact with. And also the most… purple. Alexander cocked his head, ears pricked forward. His tail immediately shot up and curled over his back to display the youth’s confidence. He was also large in stature, but not yet full grown. This meant the purple one would most likely overpower him.

But yet, this other wolf had spoke kindly and even took a second for a leisurely yawn. Alexander’s posture softened. He was no threat.

“It wasn’t just for fun,” the young wolf admitted. As an afterthought, he added, “What can I call you, sneaky one?”
PostPosted: Tue Mar 27, 2007 9:54 pm

Kek watched as the blue wolf whirled to face him, taking due note of his posture and body language. A confident young one, he carried himself well and was quick to prove his point with a raised tail. Some might challange him, but Kek felt no need to assert his place or position. He carried himself with his own confidence and easy air. He didn't need to "prove" it with obvious displays, nor did he have any desire to really push his place.

Let the adolescent play alpha - Kek was still larger, still more experienced, and his relaxed gaze guarenteed Alexander that he had no interest in pushing his buttons. Yes, Kek was indeed far too passive to truly care about rank. He was his own wolf, and until that situation changed, he didn't have to prove himself to anyone.

Alexander was by no means an exception.

Two violet ears pricked forward as the navy and cream hued wolf spoke. Not for fun? Huh. . . then obviously there had been a reason. And since it seemed he was in absolutely no rush to end up somewhere, then Kek could only figure he had been running away from some foreign source. "I see," he drawled, offering the male a lazy smile. Whatever the reason, the violet one was unconcerned and could only hope that the young adolescent learned how to slow down from time-to-time.

So many wolves rushed through their lives, they never took time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery. Kek never appeared to be in any rush, even with predators licking at his heels. He preferred to take his time about such matters, and (if possible) avoid a long winded escape.

Energy efficient indeed. . . it would surely be the end of him someday.

Sneaky? Him? The purple wolf gave a rumble of amusement, chuckeling softly at the thought. "Sneaky," he repeated with a delighted grin, "would be a first. But I've heard many call me Kekarn, or Kek." A lazy wag of his tail and, after an amused moment, another drawl, "Among other things..."

Some good, some bad - nicknames of past family, friends and loves. What was in a name but an easier way to communicate and label a stranger? Alexander could dub him Fido and it was likely the easy-going male would respond. There was too much wasted energy in being so picky and fickle over such details.

"And yourself, swift paws? Tis a pleasure, nonetheless. Just, uh, don't forget to breathe." A wink and he waited.

This wolf seemed to move as if he was stuck in a pit of quicksand. So slow and… tired almost. Though, Alexander noticed, he did appear to have only recently awoken. Maybe that was it. Alexander wondered if he ever sped things up or got excited about life. The young wolf closed his mouth and cocked his head at the other for a moment, pondering that very thought.

His name was Kekarn, then? Interesting name. Alexander wagged his tail and gave a wolfish nod in greeting. ‘Nice to meet you’ his body language said silently. “And maybe you didn’t try to be sneaky, but you surprised me.” The teen then realized he was sounding like a scared little pup. He slowly began to stand taller and stronger. He couldn’t be the alpha of a pack with Deimos if he was being startled by wolves that are only sleeping! “Of course,” he began, “That’s only because I was running from a bear who stole my lunch.”

“I’m Alexander,” he stated simply, though he also didn’t mind being called other things. Deimos sometimes referred to him as Ander, and Pavati had called him club, for whatever reason.

“What are you up to, Kekarn?” the young male questioned, tongue once again lolling out the side of his mouth.

Kek was very rarely in a rush about things. Given, there were times one had to run, as in Alexanders case. And then there were the times while one was on the hunt - deer and rabbits didn't just walk over to your drooling tongue and teeth - you had to catch them! But even during his most alert and his most intense, Kek continued to hold an easy air about him - calm, cool, and forever collected.

He could be giddy and drunk on life during games of chase with others, though it had been so long since he'd been with anyone that part of the violet wolf wondered if he even remembered how to play.

Thoughts drifting, Kek studied the young wolf before him. His navy coat and interesting cream and black pattern were quite charming. He'd never seen such specific detail over his eye, such a funny shape that resembered a clover. And the white pattern on his forleg - what on earth did that mean? Still, he was a handsome one, and the way the male carried himself seemed to speak confident enough that Kek guessed he knew it! Quite good luck, this afternoon. Kek couldn't help but be pleased.

"A bear, eh?" Kek couldn't help but grin a lethargic and ever knowing grin. How many times had he been discouraged by such a beast? "Irritating critters, even on their best behavior." Bears were strong, but loud, obnoxious, and had a tendency to be no more than a bully. Even if left alone, there was a chance they'd get way too touchy and nerved up and try to start something.

Especially when fish were involved.

Shaking out his thick winter coat, the male turned his pale green gaze over to Alexander. His bushy tail wagged slowly behind him, and he gave a soft laugh. "Oh, just avoiding the sun and about ready to start removing my winter coat itself." He shrugged his broad shoulders and ducked his head with a grin. "I think I'm quite ready to be done being a massive violet puffball," he teased.

A light breeze rustled Alexander’s fur and seemed to cool him down. He twitched his dark nose as it felt the wind upon it. Closing his tongue inside his mouth, Alexander breathed slower and slower until he was finally back to normal. Now that the threat seemed fully past, he could focus on this new wolf.

And what a wolf he was! Giant and purple, Alexander thought. Though, he had said something about a winter coat so that might contribute to his size. Kekarn. He had never seen such an oddly colored wolf. Reds and blues and browns, but never bright, bright purple. Ravii had been the same color, but not so much of it. Alexander chuckled to himself, thinking the two older wolves would probably get along very well.

A quick shake of his coat to get the fur back into place was just what Alexander needed after that run. Speaking of the run…

“That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a bear,” the adolescent admitted, hoping it would also be the last. Though, in the future, he imagined he’d be less frightened. All you have to do is drop your lunch and run to get them to leave you alone.

The younger wolf was naturally extra fluffy, so winter coats didn’t seem to come on as heavy as they did to everyone else. Furry legs made their way over to cleaner, purpler ones as Alexander began to circle the other wolf. “Your coat doesn’t look too bad to me,” Alexander began. “I like it.”

The large purple wolf listened to the wolf before him. It appeared that Alexander had finally caught his breath and shaken any surprise out of his system. A fluffy wolf, the male noted, a junior puffball in the making. Nose flaring, Kekarn memorized his scent and tucked it in mind for safekeeping. He hadn't met many, but those he did meet he remembered - it always did one well to keep such acquaintences in mind.

Kek wasn't at all perturbed by the blue males inquisitive attention. He didn't think the stranger was going to do anything, and in the back of his mind, rather enjoyed such scrutiny. Kek liked to indulge in the thought that he was indeed a handsome fellow, though logic was quick to remind him that no other male kin followed that mindset.

That little secret of his caused him too much grief over the years, but from time to time, it did pay off. Perhaps out here, in thes new lands, he'd meet -

Nope. The thought cut off there and he waited for Alexander to finish with his rounds. Giving his coat another shake, Kek's eyes danced with good humor. "Oh, I don't think it looks bad on me either, if you pardon a moments vanity," he grinned, "But as the days fill with sunshine, I fear the winter fur is a bit too warm."

One large paw toyed at the ground in front of him in a very whimsical fashion. Intelligent eyes watched the blue and cream male before him, ever relaxed and friendly.

One moment, then two, and finally he spoke again. "So tell me, Alexander," he let the name roll off his tongue, "indulge a strangers curiousity - do you run these woods alone or had the taste of fish whisked you away from your packlands?" Thus far, Sandrina had belonged to some pack, and Taonga had kept to himself. Kekarn knew very little about the surrounding territories. . .

Well, to be honest, he knew very little about the surrounding lands period. The male had kept close to the river and woods, as they seemed to stretch on forever. There were mountains far on the horizon, he knew, but everywhere else was a mystery.

"I'm new to these parts, and haven't the faintest idea of where I am. It's dangerous, you know, to skirt around edges of neglected borders. Some wolves don't take kindly to the lost, even if their reasons for trespassing are innocent."

Oh, how he knew that far too well. Some large packs didn't guard their borders very well, and the fine line between neutral ground and the claimed could be very, very thin.

Pleased to discover that Kekarn was not at all bothered by his curiosity, Alexander's tail began to wag slowly. It remained in the proper upright position, but didn't hesitate to show his happiness. This wolf was a nice one. Definitely someone to keep in touch with. Alexander padded closer to the older male, nose taking in his scents. Now Alexander could track him after they go their own ways! Just like Deimos.

The young wolf's tail drooped ever so slightly at the thought. He always seemed to part ways with the ones he met. But, maybe that could change in the near future...?

Snapping back to reality, he realized Kek had offered a reply to his comment. "Oh, I see." Alexander gave his coat a quick shake. "Not much of my winter fur is still around, but I always seem to have extra hair anyway." He explained, glancing down at his paws. They had looked extremely gigantic when he was a puppy with fluffy feet, but now he seemed to be growing into them.

Now what had Kekarn said? He was new? Oooh, this could be fun! "You're new? Well that explains why I've never seen you. I've been wandering this area for a long time..." Not as long as most, he imagined, but much too long for his liking. "As far as I know, this is no one's territory, so I suppose we're safe." Then, a thought crossed his mind.

"But that could change soon. I and a couple others might be laying claim to this area." Alexander said, tail rising over his back as he stretched.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 05, 2007 7:31 am

Kekarn kept his easy going expression, his fluffy purple and black tail wagging softly behind him. Alexander was one of the more amicable wolves he met, though Kek hadn't gone without noticing his easy confidence. The way he held his tail, the way he moved and spoke - it wasn't fearful, but he carried his tail with pride. His amicable nature dissipated any sense of conceit . . . a good thing.

Vanity and too much pride often lead to ignorance. And if someday he were to form a pack of his own, too much self-importance could easily make his run as leader falter. Dominance wasn't to be abused. Every wolf was needed and loved, from the weakest pup, to the strongest of Alpha. But the strength of the pack was only as strong as it's weakest member - and weakness wasn't necessarily just on the physical level.

Thankfully, Alexander seemed to have a good head on his shoulders.

Listening to the male, Kek shook out his fur and decided to return the curious inquisition. Moving from his spot, he let his big paws circle Alexander in return, picking up the various scents that danced off him. There was something familiar about him, a scent. . . . . eh, it was too weak, too cluttered with other things. Nothing to worry about, really.

"You do have some lasting thick fur," Kekarn noted gently, finishing his rounds when he reached the navy furred males front. "But it's quite a stunning look, really." He had listened to the male chatter on about possibly forming a pack, and taking claim to the area. So his life was destined for the pack, eh? Kek had no doubt in his mind, with such confidence (and how he'd named himself first) whose idea it might have been. "And a future alpha must look stunning."

No. . . it was a genuine compliment! He wasn't coming on to him. Really. . . . . Well, ok, maybe just a little. But Kek reasoned he could always get away with a little flattery. Most males didn't naturally EVER think of wolves like Kekarn. Their ignorance and naivetee occassionally allowed him to say things under pretense of kindness. His words were true, of course, but occassionally there was another hidden weight behind them.

But that was his secret, really.

He didn't need to alienate the first aquaintences and friends right away. Most males didn't take kindly to the notion of being 'admired' by another male.

"So, you're destined for pack life?" He asked, tilting his head and offering a lazy grin. "It's a good life, from my experience, especially if it's with those you trust." Kek wasn't lying, not really. Packs could be good with the right members. But there was words left unsaid, the flip side of the 'good life'. If packs were so well, then why was he wandering alone? Most members didn't just slip away without some reason.

Old scars that lined his coat proved that he had some experience with others a time or two.

"I wish you and your friends much luck with such an endeavor. A good spot of land, it is," he added, pale eyes light with good humor. "The best spots always do get claimed and I'm forced to move. Packwolves, hmph," he teased, "Such bullies." But there was no malice in his words, and the wink he gave Alexander proved it was all in good natured jest.

He wasn't bothered by relocation at all. His experience was chuck full of it.

Alexander reminded himself once more how much he liked this wolf. Strangely enough, Kekarn almost reminded him of his… mother. The teen chuckled at the thought of comparing this massive purple wolf to a female. However, the similarities were very apparent. His mother had also been a large wolf – probably where Alexander himself got his size from. She was kind, too…

But enough of that. There were enough differences between Kekarn and his mom to set them apart in his mind. Still, it was very comforting being around this massive purple canine.

He noticed his companion begin to sniff his coat, and circle at the same time, mirroring what Alexander had done. The young blue male made a point to stand extra tall while he was being lightly scrutinized. And what was that? It seemed to have paid off. Stunning? Why, how nice of Kekarn to mention it. Alexander grinned wolfishly.

“How did you know I was going to be the alpha?” Alexander asked, showing that in his young age, he was still a bit naïve. Then, he paused and considered the circumstances. Or really, just the stances period. Remembering that he carried himself with the confidence of a pack leader told Alexander how Kek might’ve come to that conclusion.

Dismissing his silly question by not waiting for an answer, Alexander continued. “I would trust my other alpha with my life. He’s my best friend.” The thought of Deimos by his side caused Alexander’s tail to wag lightly. Kekarn’s next statement, however, ceased this behavior. He didn’t want to kick anybody out!

“But…” Alexander protested, not sure what would come next. His ears flattened briefly, before perking up with the rest of his body when an idea struck. “You could stay, you know. My pack would be lucky to have a wolf like you.” Alexander offered, tail wagging once more.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 06, 2007 8:33 am

Kek listened to the young, confident male and couldn't help but allow for an easy smile to cross his features. Any surprise by the question asked was quickly dismissed - he was young, but with time he too would be able to read between the lines. It was hard to not look at Alexander without thinking Alpha. His poise, his confidence, his relaxed nature, his pride - it all added up to the charming word known as Leader.

With a little more experience under his belt, Kekarn was sure that his new friend would go very far. He'd have to keep his ears and eyes out for him, whenever his friends did officially capture some land. Part of Kek was pleased that he'd made a good ally [or at the very least acquaintance] with such a wolf. Luck had been smiling down upon him these last few days.

The violet one dreaded when it would run out.

Not bothering to answer, since the male didn't seem to WANT an answer, Kek was a little surprised by the other alpha turning out to be male. Most packs ran with one alpha male to a group, the other position being taken over by a resident female. It ususally wound up being the alpha's mate, but not always. Whoever was best fit for the part, really. Dominance was a forever changing system.

Still, he mused, Alexander was young. There was no reason why two strong males couldn't lead! Pale blue eyes lit up and his own tail wagged in gentle pleasure. "If you trust him with your life, then you indeed have found a good one. Friendship is what a pack is all about it, isn't it?" There were so many different packs out there - some families that stuck together, others strangers that leaned on one another. Some were friendly towards strangers, others hostile - some were greedy, others generous. Really, a pack could consist of anything, but friendship and trust were large componants.

An Alpha had to trust all those he lead - he needed to trust them to follow his word, to obey the rules of the land, and not have to worry about a future uprising. While in turn, the others had to trust that the alpha DID know what he was talking about, that he was someone they would readily follow, trust that the Alpha's would protect the families and territory, to keep them safe.

Cream-tipped ears pricked foward, first in concern, then in surprise at Alexander's next comment. The flattened ears - even if only for a moment - aused the violet one to wonder what he'd done wrong. Thankfully, it seemed the blue male had lit up with some grandiose idea. The raised tail and stance, the pricked ears - Kek wagged his tail happily for Alexander, even before his question was asked.

The large, grape-stained male contemplated the idea. Stay with Alexander and join up with his pack. . .? When was the last time he had such an offer, or was a place in his life where he could stick around a land. He did enjoy this area of Telk, and had found the local wolves to be more than friendly. It was a good spot of land, and Alexander would make a prime alpha. Kek would have no problem looking upon the younger male as such. . .

Oh, how he would have liked to accept.

But something held him back. All good things came to an end, and Kek wasn't a wolf who wanted to be mauled or picked on. As happened, the few accepting packs he'd found had either crumbled, or situations within them had caused him to leave by choice. Some packs didn't find wolves with Kek's interest desirable or natural. . .

So that left the violet one with two choices - stay quiet about such things, and either deprive himself of companionship or have it slip on a moment of broken defenses.

Or tell him now, and prepare himself for the possibility Alexander wouldn't take kindly to such news.

Kek refused to lie or be anyone but himself. That left him with only one choice. Pawing at the ground, Kek ducked his head in an almost coy fashion. Licking his nose, blue-green eyes peered brightly up at Alexander.

"Such a lovely tempation, it really is. Just as you claim your pack would be so lucky to have a purple puffball as myself with it, I would be twice as lucky to run with you." He knew none of Alexanders friends, but had to assume that the navy wolf's taste was good. He was offering Kek to join, wasn't he? That was a good sign right there (if he did think so himself).

"But before I agree, friend, I suppose I should be clear about a potential source of trouble by allowing me to join." Ugh. No matter how often he had to do this, it never got any easer. Damned differences. -_- And damned closed-minded consideration. "I. . . I'm not like most wolves, really."

Kek really didn't want to admit it. For all his lethargic confidence, for all his playful nature and collected behavior, when breaking such news to a friend or packmate, only then did a lick of insecurity call. He wasn't perfect, nor made of ice and steel.

Even Kekarn had his bad days.

Part of him wished the offer hadn't been given. Had he and Alexander merely stayed friends and acquaintences, perhaps there would be no need to discuss such details. But if he were to become his alpha, it only made sense that the leaders knew. He wasn't going to get run out and humilated by an entire pack when he could just be politely rejected by one.

A shame it might be the navy and cream male. Kek did rather enjoy his company and thought they could make good friends. A good friend was rare to come by, and rarer still, a good alpha. Why did Alexander have to be both?

Shaking out his fur, he slipped in to a lazy smile and shrugged. "This would only be an issue if I were to find a mate, really. If that were to happen, he would not be of the female persuasion."

It was true. So long as he didn't find a mate or someone whose company he truly, TRULY enjoyed, perhaps he could get away with not saying anything. But if he were to find a mate, or someone who enjoyed his company so thoroughly, he wouldn't hide that fact from anyone. Even if it meant ridicule and rejection.

It was Alexander's choice, really. Some wolves didn't care, others did. And he had their bite marks to prove it.

Quickly attempting to regain his composure, the male turned his head and licked at some of his puffy violet fur. He couldn't quite bring himself to look Alexander in the eye. . . but he really didn't want his uncertainty to shine through. It wasn't that he was ashamed of the fact . . . he just . . .had a few bad experiences with it. And was afraid this would be one more to his list.

(( Goodness, you left me a novel to reply to. @.@; Uta is the super-rper! ))

The blue wolf continued to wag his tail, very pleased at meeting this male. He was also thankful the purple wolf looked over his silly words and decided not to respond to them. Alexander breathed a miniscule sigh of relief. He wanted to seem like he knew what he was doing! Oddly enough, the furry-footed adolescent acted more mature as a pup than he did now. It seemed that Alexander had gotten comfortable enough with his surroundings to finally act like a puppy! Unfortunately, by this time he’d already grown out of his puppy body.

Alexander noticed the faint surprise on his companion’s face when he had told Kekarn about trusting Deimos. He was vaguely aware that most packs had a ruling male and female, but he refused to care. He wanted to be in a pack with Deimos, and they were both suited to be alphas… so they would be! The teen nodded to himself, confirming the thought.

Kekarn seemed to agree that the trust and friendship between him and his fellow alpha was a good thing to have. For some reason, Alexander knew he should trust this other wolf’s words. Kekarn seemed to have a clear head and a good handful of experiences to draw knowledge from. Oh, how he wished the purple male would join their pack!

As luck would have it, Kekarn seemed to want to join! He’d even said he would be lucky to run with Alexander and his group. The teen’s features lit up even more, eyes bright with possibilities. However, it was short lived. What was that? Something to clear up?

Alexander lowered his haunches as Kekarn seemed to become nervous. He felt that sitting meant he was comfortable and non-threatening, and hoped it lessened the purple one’s nerves. “Not like most wolves…?” Alexander repeated very quietly, letting the thought process in his mind. He cocked his head to the side, wondering what this meant. Luckily, Kekarn chose to continue.

The sitting wolf allowed himself time to think about this next statement. Kekarn didn’t like females? Well, that would be okay, Deimos hated them too. But how could he have a mate without there being a female? Alexander cocked his head to the other side, extremely curious about this. No matter how many times he turned it over in his head, Alexander couldn’t find the problem with this. He really didn’t care, and he WAS the alpha after all. If someone else cared, he would be sure to tell them to get over it.

“I don’t see a problem with that,” Alexander said finally, standing up. He padded over and nuzzled Kekarn’s shoulder, trying to cheer the other wolf up. “But it is interesting and I’m not sure I’ve ever run into a wolf like you before. But before now, I didn’t really know it was weird or that it mattered too much.” The teen continued, hoping his jumble of words made sense to the other. Stepping back, Alexander lowered his head, trying to make eye contact.

Kekarn was perfectly content with his way of life. He wasn't ashamed of the fact that he felt much more comfortable with another male, and never felt anything save friendship with a resident female. He wasn't embarressed, even when ridiculed and rejected. It wasn't an easy way to live, but with experience upon experience, he'd learned the art of tact and subtlty. Ninety percent of the wolves he met had no need to know such intimate details - the other ten percent consisted of past loves, past rejection, past mistaken interrpretation of signals, a handful of friends, and pack alpha's and packmates.

Each and every time the end result had changed - no two wolves ever reacted the same.

So while he spit out his words, and neglected to look Alexander in the eye, he waited and wondered. How was the blue, black and cream male going to take such news? It really wasn't a problem with others until he acted upon such desires. Though he could easily hide his interest in other males, if he were lucky enough to ever find one similar in taste as his own, he would never hide them from the world.

Only when things became apparant did wolves get nervous.

. . . . would Alexander do that? He hoped not. He seemed level headed enough to at least accept such ideas. But, on the other hand, some of his most trusted had turned him away upon discovery of his strange taste. Kek was an independent and lone wolf by force, not choice, and it had been a loooooong time since he'd found a stable pack.

He'd never been this open about his tastes so early on before, but with his track record, keepin things secret wound up having many detrimental effects. Perhaps this was the way to go all along?

One breath, two, Kek felt as if time had slowed to a snail pace. The longer the wait, the harder the rejection. . .

Damn.

"I don't see a problem with that," came the blessed response.

Ears pricked foward, blue-green eyes widening in the first OBVIOUS display of emotion besides relaxation, the surprised male wore his shock well. It was easy to see he hadn't expected such quick acceptance.

Before words set in to his thick skull, a blue and cream muzzle nuzzed his shoulder. Purple tail began to wag, at first slow, but then quickly picking up speed! Any moments insecurity and anxiety quickly melted away.

What luck he was having indeed! Days previous he met Deimos, and today he'd been accepted in to a pack - and truly been 'accepted'. It seemed too good to be true, but Kekarn didn't dare think of hidden shadows. Life was good right now and was a truly wonderful place.

A pause, before the male registered what his new alpha spoke. Gratitude and relief radiated off the male, and he seemed a hundred times more relaxed around Alexander than before! He had nothing to hide, and there was no trace of the previous moments of doubt and anxiety. He was a happy purple puppy, Alexander could readily read the signs.

Catching his eye, blue-green orbs bright, the male chuckeled low in his throat. "I must say, there aren't many like me out there. A rare breed, I suppose, but I've met two others with . . .similar tastes." A shame such things hadn't worked out for Kek. . . but at least he'd realized he wasn't the only 'unnatural' male in the world.

And whoever deemed it 'unnatural', Kekarn hadn't a clue.

Trotting over to Alexander, the violet one made his first dominant gesture of the evening (or lack thereof, in this case); ears pinning back, he dropped his tail from its wag to rest calmly upon his heels and nuzzled the navy wolf under his chin. Without a moments hesitation or an extinguishing of pride, he'd devoted himself to Alexander.

"Oh, it matters to some," he assured cooly, giving a faint snort in memory. "I have the scars to prove it."

Alexander mused over the subject for quite a while, his young face cocked to the right in thought. His blue and gray tail remained upright but wagged slowly in content confusion. He didn’t know why personal preference was anything to fight about. After al, love was supposed to be happy, wasn’t it? That’s what his mother told him. But she had also warned him and his brother to be careful. Maybe this is what she was talking about? The young wolf shrugged and shook his head. He supposed he would understand females and males and mates some day; why worry about it now?

The blue wolf snapped out of his thought bubble just in time to see Kekarn perk up. It was refreshing to see the purple male act outwardly happy. In fact, Kekarn was so obviously happy that it was contagious. Alexander’s upright tail wagged to and fro in a fit of joy. Being a pack alpha sure was shaping up to be a wonderful thing for him! He loved accepting new wolves into his and Deimos’ pack.

However, in his bout of happiness, those two words still resonated in his young mind. Be careful. Alexander knew that he couldn’t accept just any wolf into the pack. He had to think about the safety and privacy of the others. A wolf that would turn on them or give away their location was simply not acceptable. He had responsibilities now! Absentmindedly, Alexander puffed out his chest, trying to look more like he imagined an alpha to look.

He felt, rather than saw, Kek become even more relaxed at the knowledge of being accepted. This made the blue wolf even more excited. After all, he needed pack mates to be relaxed around him. He nodded at Kekarn’s statement, and before he knew it, there was a large purple fuzzball nuzzling his chin. Alexander was startled at first by this gesture, but soon returned it in earnest, tail wagging all the while.

After a few moments, the younger wolf pulled away and took a step back. Bright blue eyes met green-gray ones as Alexander spoke. “About this pack… I was taught to use everything around me to survive. The forest, the air, and all the creatures. Usually, that meant eating them, but sometimes… they had other uses. I’ve found that most of the animals in the forest value their safety.” Alexander lowered his haunches to the ground before continuing. “If I promise to keep them safe, they will do almost anything. I like to use them as messengers to contact friends.” The young wolf grinned. “I think this will be a good method to contact pack members who are wandering outside of the pack lands.”

Alexander stopped for another second before adding, “But there’s always good old fashioned howling, also.” At that, he raised his nose to the sky and let out a long, high, call to the heavens.
