Maia wasn’t sure what to do, where to go. She had made herself a den but, being used to the open air, could not bring herself to crawl into it. The pain shot through her, bringing her down to the ground. Her pups, it seemed, were eager to be out in the world. She had realised just a week or so ago what was happening to her when she felt a small movement inside. At first she had thought she was ill or sick, that something was very wrong with her, but at that point, that tiny movement, she had come to the truth. She still wasn’t really prepared… she didn’t believe she was too young but that she was too inexperienced. She had never been around pups, never had any experience.
-----
The black backed, white wolf padded softly over the rocks, delighting in the feel of the sun’s warmth on his back. It had been a cold, cruel, long winter and he was glad that, finally, the sun was making an appearance again. The bundle in his mouth barely weighed a thing and yet the burden it imposed was heavy. A small pile of tawny and white fur splashed with black which had barely moved since he had picked it up that morning. The bleakness of that scene had gone from him now as he contemplated the rebirth of the female – perhaps she would be walking the world again in a few months – it had not been a nice way to leave this time, though. He deposited the pup on the soft ground, as gently as he could, and peered around.
He was atop a grassy slope, peering out over the forest below. It was around midday, relatively warm despite the breeze. He could smell the salty air which indicated seawater nearby, and the mulchy dampness which was the forest before it. What he wanted to find was the scent of a female. One, preferably, who was due in the next day or so or had just whelped. He didn’t have some kind of odd kink – he wanted to make sure the tiny one he had carried thus far could find a teat from which to succour life. If it had been even a week or so older he could have tried to feed the soft mushy meat brought up from his gullet but this little one was too tiny for that. It really should not have even been outside, truth be told, but there was no other way. Its mewling cries told Kalain it was time to move again. He gave the tiny male pup a gentle lick and then grasped the delicate skin between his teeth and set off. Redemption. This pup was part of his, he was sure.
-----
It was the blood which had caught his attention first. As always, that which flowed in giving life and death had made itself known to his nose as soon as he had begun to near his goal. This was the blood which could take and deliver the blood of birth which had so recently robbed the pup he carried of a mother. It was not chance, he thought, that brought him to another so close to birthing, but the blood, the cycle. This pup was meant to live. Padding forward, he silently slipped up to where the mother lay. The first of her own had come, he saw, a tiny female with almost the same shades of colouring as the little one he held. The mother, though, she was one of the brightest shades of orange he'd seen on a wolf. His violet eyes met her red ones.
It didn’t occur to him to ask, to explain his presence or any such thing. He had turned up before where other females were giving birth, helping in any way he could and had found he was never questioned. He dropped the pup lightly near her belly, her life-giving teats, and sniffed over the other. Healthy. Despite her muffled whimpers as the next pup came the female, thank the Moon, seemed to be fit and strong, if young for it. She was alone, though. Maybe not for long, perhaps the mate would return soon enough. Orange coats can’t be easy to hunt in, he thought, but she looks as though she’s not short on her meals and it’s not just the bulge of pregnancy.
Once all her young had arrived and he had looked them over, without having said a word to her, he slipped off – a ghost in the darkening forest.
Maia’s concentration was all on her new brood. She was still somewhat shocked at their arrival – it had only been in the last week or two that she had realised that her thickening waist was not the result of overeating or age or some such thing. She had never before thought she was ‘too young’ to do something. She had to grow up too fast to ever think but now, with five little mouths grasping onto her and needing her and relying on her she felt a little bit lost. She was barely past puppyhood herself! Slowly, though, instinct kicked in. Her eyes moved over the little squirming bundles and she smiled. Slowly at first but then it became a grin. She had brought these little things into the world. They were hers. And she was proud. The addition, the other little one which had been brought as if by some spectre, seemed too much one of her litter to imagine he was not meant to be there. It was that which had seemed to pass between the pair when Kalain had come. “He is yours” seemed to be the message and, despite him not coming out of her, it did seem true. He had her smell on him now, was suckling at her teat, was hers just as much as the other four gorgeous little darlings were.
She looked at them all in turn now. A girl, the firstborn, such a mix of her and their father. Tan and white but with Maia’s markings as well as her grandmothers! Neira… Maia felt a pang of regret that her mother wasn’t here to see them despite knowing the trouble she’d have been in if the old female knew. The second. No, third. A boy, dark brown and again with the markings of his mother.
The fourth, another beautiful girl, this one almost the opposite in colour to herself.
The last one, the runt, not really like father or mother except that he had Maia’s bright colouring. More like ‘Neira with those marks on his cheeks, she though, smiling to herself.
(( *Coff* I know there’s not too much y’can do when they’re blind and helpless so I suggest a sort of… scoot forward a week or two when they’re on their feet and eyes are open etc. Sorry for the HUGE post – I had a lot of ideas going into this and have been adding to it since wooga and I got the breeding slot XD))

Maia’s time at the den was coming to an end. She had, finally, squeezed herself and her family into the small underground lair to keep them safe and snug. Now, though, the pups were on their feet and running around. She was feeling the need to wander. She had taken small jaunts around the area of her impromptu den with them but now she wanted to move on. She had been moved around much as a pup and it felt only natural that her's should travel at even so young an age too.
Gathering them together she wondered to herself which way to go. She might head towards the area in which she had last met Ieshia - it would be a journey into territory she knew which was not quite so exciting but would be a little safer for the pups. It would also look very different in spring bloom compared to late winter chill.
"Come on you lot" she smiled trying to herd the bunch of them together. "We're going on an adventure.."

(( Soo imma post 8D ))
A little pup scampered up between her ever-so different mothers front legs, standing up as well as she could to bat at the adults chin, but she was already clumbsy enough on her four paws, imagine just two! So she quickly was forced to land, and fold her ears back.
"Where we going mama? " Elora asked, perking up again and wagging her little fuzzy tail, zigzagging between Maia's legs excitedly. "Whats an avenchu? " She tripped on one of her mothers paws, and flopped pathetically on the ground, but looking up and wagging her tail anyway, grinning like a playfull pup.

Kaila's ears pricked up slightly. She wasn't sure what an 'advenchair' was, but it seemed they were on the move. She wriggled on her back for a little longer, her tail wagging happily. Then she rolled onto her side, and from there climbed clumbsily onto her feet, allowing herself to be herded. "Yeah, where're we goin' Mama?" she piped up, echoing Elora's words. She giggled as her sister tripped on Maia's paws, loping over to flop on top of her and gnaw on one of Elora's ears playfully.
