Crunch.

Crunch.

Sen frowned. She wasn't sure who was responsible for all these little rocks being on the ground here--perhaps a lion or another animal or just nature itself?--but they were awfully mean for doing it! If only she could fly, she mused, this wouldn't be an issue. Things that could fly didn't need to worry about stepping on things on the ground, now did they?

A look over her shoulder allowed the cub to calculate her distance from the rest of her family. She could still see one of the big (really, really big) rocks, and as long as it stayed within her line of vision, she could wander freely. Her sense of direction was amazing for one so young.

At least, she thought so.

This was so boring...

Her ears twitched, a response to picking up voices unfamiliar to her. Curiousily, she padded forward, peeking around a dying tree and toward those making the noise.

"... And then I was too tired to play-fight anymore! But it was a white thing, I don't think it was a lion..." Dahabu'Chaka rambled on to her new best friend Noyana.

"What was its mother's name again?" Noyana asked the jackal-lion. She had met something that matched the description, but it was older. Perhaps the mother of this Ukabe that Chaka was talking about. "I've met an 'Amaterasu' that matched that kind of shaped animal," She told her friend, the pair completely oblivious to where they were going. Chaka had a good nose; she'd be able to find the way back without a doubt.

"YEAH!" Chaka said happily to her friend. That was mommy's best friend! She broke through a wall of grass walking backwards and ran into something hard- and white and fuzzy. She jumped and turned to face whatever the thing was, and it turned out to be another lioness.

"Sorry!" Chaka said to the new lion. She scolded herself in her head for being so careless. "I'm Dahabu'Chaka, and this is Noyana," she said, gesturing to her larger friend. She was sick of being introduced, and decided to introduce Noyana for a change of pace.

The impact caused Sen to squeak and stumble back. She was no strong warrior and no intention of being one, so if this thing (whatever it was, it definately wasn't a lion) wanted to fight, she'd turn tail and run back to Mama. She was definately faster!

Her head raised higher, as did her ears. So, it didn't want to fight. "I'm Dahabu'Chaka," the cub mimiced, silently praising herself for saying such a long name with complete accuracy. Her eyes followed the gesture to the destination of another.

Ah! This one was definately a lion! "Noyana," Sen echoed, nodding in an almost dismissive way.

"Why's she repeating us?" Noyana asked her friend quietly. She'd never met someone who couldn't speak their own words. She most certainly wouldn't ridicule the other lion, but... It was bizarre, at least to Noyana's eyes.

"What's your name?" She asked, turning her attention to the white female. She looked almost like a ghost with the shade of her eyes. Noyana thought it was cool! Whoever this was certainly could play lots of jokes if she wanted to!

"I'm Dahabu Chaka..." She said quietly to herself. How dare this lion mock her? Chaka was a strong lioness! (Or so she believed fervently; she discarded anything anyone said about her being a jackal) Probably the strongest of her litter!

"I'm not sure. Maybe she's just really young?" She said back to her larger friend quietly, picking up on the discreteness that was intended. She waited politely for the lioness to reply.

Assuming Sen to be young would be assuming something that was correct. It had been only a matter of days since she'd been old enough to even move along herself, not to mention sneak away from her mother and father.

"Really young!" Sen echoed, observing the two as if they were the ones acting oddly.

"I guess so!" Noyana said, thinking that Sen's words were not just repeated. "Where are you from?" Noyana asked, cocking her head. "And do you want to play?" She bounced and lowered herself.

Chaka bent down too, into the typical canine-play position. She'd like tag or something. "Or maybe we could all go exploring! What do you think?" She asked, gesturing towards the young cub. They didn't even know her name yet.

Where was she from? Her pale eyes darted toward the big rock. Priderock, she'd been told it was called. Wasn't that where everyone was from?

"Play! Exploring!" The cub bounced, or it looked like she was, rocking back and forth on her front paws, then back ones. Her tail swayed behind her, a terrible and absent habbit she hadn't been able to rid herself of. Not that she'd had a whole lot of time to lessen bad habbits, let alone develope them.

"Alright, let's go exploring!" Chaka said happily, jumping up. She didn't take notice of the other lion's excited rocking. Chaka started excitedly in one direction before she stopped. "Where should we go?"

"I dunno," Noyana said, bounding to catch up with her friend. She checked behind her to make sure the other cub was keeping up. "I think we should go over there," Noyana said, pointing with an extended claw. "I found some cool rocks over there, they were kinda shiny." She saw a nod from Chaka and turned to the other lioness. "Well, you wanna go see them? Or maybe you've seen someplace cooler," Noyana said, wondering if the cub had indeed been to more interesting places than she.

Sen kept a steady pace behind the two. Rocks were good. Shiny rocks were even better. But-- "Cooler," she repeated, her voice thoughtful. As if coming to some realization, she cried happily, "Cooler!" From there, the word began as a chant. "Cooler. Cooler. Cooler."

And Sen bounded along in what she knew was the right direction. She'd never been wrong or gotten lost before. It should be right about... Aha!

"Cooler!" the cub declared. She hadn't checked to see if they were following her, but assuming they had, the trio was now standing next to a decent sized crack in the Earth. No threat to bigger creatures, but with plenty enough width to be a danger to small ones like them. The bottom ended in pure blackness.

"Wow!" Chaka said, trotting to catch up with the cub. "It's got lots of 'em too!" She said, sticking her muzzle over the edge. The looming blackness didn't effect her in the least- she almost wanted to go find the bottom, but not by jumping.

"Yup!" Noyana said following behind. She pulled up next to the others and looked down. "It's a long way down, but there are little pebbles like this all around this place," Noyana said, picking up a pebble between two of her toes. It glimmered in the sunlight, a true treasure. Noyana got a smug look on her face, glad that she had been the one to think of the place.

"Down?" Now, there was an idea. And she'd thought today was going to be boring! It was anything but, she decided, as she turned away from the opening. Slowly but surely, she stepped backward, until her back feet were sliding downward. Her tiny claws extended and clutched at the rocky side.

Sen now had every intention of seeing what was at the bottom of her discovery.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 16, 2007 4:15 pm

"Down?" Chaka asked. She knew that her little lion-claws were not meant for climbing. It was yet another hint that she was really a jackal, but she simply refused to believe it.

And Noyana was already on her way down behind this other cub! She'd have to act fast if she wanted to go down with the others, which she most definitely did.

"Noyana... I can't... go down there like you guys can!" Chaka called desperately, hoping her friend would come back to get her and take her down somehow.

Noyana's ears perked up at Chaka's call. Fortunately for her partner, she wasn't very far down yet.

"I'll catch up with you in a sec, ok?" She called down, looking back for some sign of affirmative from the cub. She lept over the edge and started thinking of a way to make this work. "Get on my back and hang on tight, just don't choke me," Noyana said. The jackal climbed on and they were back in business.

"I'm coming down again!" Noyana called to the other cub, who she could just barely see through the darkness.
Surely we're getting near the bottom... She thought.

Sen didn't think the term 'explorer' fit her very well, even if she was diving into a crack in the Earth that led to who knew where. Explorers, she knew, were those interested in places that hadn't ever been. Sen? She was just interested in other lions, and sometimes... whatever it was the other thing was called.

But if you wanted to keep company, sometimes you had to find ways to entertain them. Exploring worked wonders for that. But she'd never go anywhere like that alone, which is why she waited, clinging to the side of the ditch, until Noyana sounded close to her again.

A snort was the only sign Sen had heard her, and the cub continued down, down, down...

Until her shaky paws touched the surface.

Dahabu'Chaka quickly jumped off of Noyana's back when she found the bottom. Her pupils were dialated as much as possible, it was so dark in here. She was truly grateful that Noyana had had the strength to get them both down here in one piece. The jackal could see in enough detail to do some good exploring, and quickly darted off one way while Noyana finished her descent.

Nothing much, just bigger shiny rocks. Too big to take back. Some bones from a klipspringer too, which she brought back in her mouth.

"Nuffing much ofer here!" She said between her teeth as she raced back to the other two.

Noyana was glad that Chaka had decided an early departure would be a good idea. The jackal was starting to get a touch heavy by the end there.

"You ever been this far underground?" Noyana asked Sen while Chaka was off.
She knew she hadn't.
It was colder and damper down here- as if earth kept it's treasures in this little hole. Noyana glanced around, waiting to see if Chaka would ever return, which she did. The bone was a chilling reminder of what could happen to them should they get stuck. No need to worry though, Noyana was bigger than even most females, and a lot stronger too.

Sen hadn't, but didn't say so. Not that she said anything at all. To many strangers the cub seemed almost mute, only able to echo what another had said.

Her observations and prowling can up empty. Nothing over here, either. Having the attention span many her age did, she was bored within the next two minutes. Her claws clung to the side of the cliff and she pulled herself upward---

--only to topple back down, and land on her head with an 'oof'!
