Ah, the familiar smell of the city.
Charlot was sitting on one of the troupe crates, watching from where they'd set up. A thin layer of snow had made it's home across his hat and coat, falling across his shoulders and around him. He hadn't moved in a while. He glanced down and realized his cigarette had burned down to the filter- a waste of a good smoke. They were in a city, he could probably buy some more. That was a good idea, considering they'd just come from a place where it was hard to find them and who knew where they'd end up next.
He shook the snow from his hat with a grunt, pushing himself to his feet and dusting his clothes lightly. He wanted to explore a bit, maybe find a bar and get into a little trouble.

Snow, as this cold white stuff was apparently called, was a new experience for Lucrezia. Or, in compromise, snow this thick was a new experience. There had been flurries in Rome, true, but never to a point where she actually shivered under her wool cloak and sweater. And her light shoes were no good. She had spent part of the morning in a supply closet looking for boots and had luckily found some.
She rounded a corner and spotted Charlot just standing up.
"Bonjour?"

Charlot looked up, tucking the remains of his cigarette pack into his pocket. He'd been counting what he had left when she'd appeared. He offered her a smile, tugging his hat in greeting.
"Mornen Lu- 'ow are you t'day?" She looked on the happy side of miserable. He wondered if she was used to this kind of weather wherever she was from. He hadn't found that out yet.

"Cold," Lucrezia replied, tugging her cloak closer around her. She noticed that Charlot wasn't shivering nearly as much as she was. "Are you used to this kind of weather?" she asked.

"Yeah, it's always like this back 'ome. A little more wet, Oi think. The cold is th'same." He glanced at her, eyebrow raised slightly. "You not used to this, eh?"
He could tell from the way she huddled beneath the clothes she wore and the boots she'd found.

Lucrezia shook her head. "Not at all. It's warm and dry where I come from."
The cold was beginning to seep through her boots. She couldn't believe this. "I hope we can go somewhere sort of like that next."

Charlot shrugged his shoulders, watching his breath form in tiny silvery plumes.
"It's betta if y'keep movin', 'elps th' blood stay warm." He nodded toward the partially buried path that lead into the city area. "You wan t'go for a bit of a walk? They might 'ave a place you can get a warm drink in if you like." He gestured toward that area, hopeful for someone to join him.

That sounded like a good suggestion to Lucrezia. Charlot seemed to know the weather well enough, so she was willing to take his advice. Nodding, she fell into step beside him.
"I haven't seen you in weeks it seems! How have you been?" she asked. The incident of Maxem wearing his shirt came to mind, but she didn't want to bring it up just yet. If at all. She'd been trying to forget that.

"Oi've been a-bit busy 'elpin around 'ere and 'onen me skills. Oi guess we don't bunk close 'nuff to see each other often, eh?" He tugged off his hat to dust it free of snow, placing it back on his head with a flick of his wrist. "'Ows your p'formance goin? Y'got a show yet?"
He still wanted to see the entire thing, not just the practice he'd been around for. They appeared at the end of a street, path cleared by someone who'd shoveled the snow earlier in the morning. He glanced left and right before choosing a sidewalk to start down. He figured if he followed the scent of food and warm coffee he'd eventually find the place supplying it.

"My performance?" repeated Lucrezia, looking up the street. The buildings increased in height on either side of them as they continued walking, clear up into the clouds she imagined. "Oh, right, I got to do a show a week or so ago. It went pretty well! I know you wanted to see it, but I didn't see you to tell you about it before it went up. I'm sorry."
She stared at the buildings until she almost tripped off the edge of the sidewalk. As she regained her balance, she stammered, "They're all so huge!"

Charlot shrugged his shoulders, turning back to the path set before them. The streets look familiar, dirty and covered in a thick layer of gray snow. Even the smell sparked a memory in the back of his mind.
He looked up as Lucrezia stumbled, eyebrows up as she caught herself. At her statement he nodded, a grin across his face.
"Yea'... oi was noticin' that m'self." His gaze caught the multi-colored windows of a row of shops, each one lit up in an attempt to attract customers. He spotted the tea/coffee shop among them and nodded that direction. "..'ere we go. Just what we need."

Lucrezia was barely listening. She was enamored with the buildings, with their sky-touching splendor and glinting lights and steel frames. There just hadn't been things like this in Rome! The Colosseum, yes. Temples, yes. Buildings this marvelous? No! Without a doubt, no!
She nodded meekly and followed Charlot, nearly tripping off the curb again. She was perfectly aware she was making a fool out of herself, but this was worth it. Such a spectacle... Circuses and magic couldn't compare. She had even forgotten how cold she was because she was too busy wondering - how did the buildings stay up confused What were they made of? Who built them? How?
Drawing her eyes away and looking at the shop, she frowned. She didn't recognize the currency symbols.
"I've only got Franciscan Empire coins."

The cafe, aptly named 'Marco's', was a quaint little building nestled between two larger establishments- a bakery that gushed out the scent of fresh baked items and a smoke shop that smelled heavily of exotic spices to lace over the harsher smells of tobacco and smoke.
Charlot thought about popping into the latter later, and stepped forward to push the cafe's door open for the young lady he was 'escorting'. He stepped aside, gesturing with one gloved hand for her to go on in.
The open door allowed the warm coffee laced air to float out and hit her skin, warming it on contact. It felt inviting, with a well lit interior and soft half-round couches and chairs. A bar to the far right had stools and a few patrons bent over bowls of soup and over sized mugs of black coffee or tea.
"Smells good," Charlot murmured, turning his gaze toward Lu as she approached. "Don't worry 'bout currency, Oi made a bit of this foreign coin last night." He flashed a wink. "Got it covered."

"It does," agreed Lucrezia, stepping inside. Her cloak was whipped about by a gust of warm air as the door closed. "You did?" she asked in response to the comment about currency. "You do? Thank you."
She scanned the menu behind the counter, reading off the prices. She wasn't sure how the economy worked, but it seemed like everything cost relatively the same. That seemed odd. At home things like chocolate and coffee cost a good deal more than tea.
The ringmaster in rome had kept a stash of cocoa powder and other exotic spices from the newly-discovered New World, and when he came by milk and sugar would brew some and share it among the senior cast members, Lucrezia's father included, and he would always make sure she got a sip.
"Hot chocolate, I think," she twittered to Charlot next to her.

"My pleasha." Charlot murmured, walking inside once she'd entered the room. The door latched behind him, securing the heated air inside with a bit of cold from outside. He began to rub his hands together as he approached the counter, eyes scanning the menu.
"Choc'late, eh?" His eyebrows rose, teeth running across his lower lip as he contemplated having tea or coffee. He'd have lots of work tonight, so coffee sounded the best choice.
With a nod, he stepped forward again and gained the clerks attention. "Oi'll ave a coffee, bit o'suga; and this missy'll have one of y'ot cocoas."
It took the man a moment to understand, but he smiled and nodded. "Coffee and Hot chocolate, coming up!" He offered them a small number card, allowing them to leave the counter to find a place to sit. Charlot gestured for Lu to pick the place.
