Daray was exhausted.
"Daddy, daddy!" a small voice chirped up from behind him. "Where we goin'? Where's Momma and sisters? Huh?"
"Patience, Kindle..." he said, trying to show some himself. "We are headed towards their way. It'll be a couple more minutes..."
The family had been seperated as Daray had gone back to tell his former two-legger and Mauli the good news about his children's birth. Aita had opted out of meeting the human girl, and Daray had taken his eldest daughter with him, attempting to keep his mate as sane as he could, with all three girls a handful. Kindle alone provided to be hard to handle, as she was full of energy and wonder, no doubt taking it on from his side of the family. The only problem, however, was her lack of control of said energy.
"But Daaaaaaaaaaaaaddy" Kindle whined, hopping out in front of his path. "I don't see them yet!"
His eldest daughter no doubt took most of her personality from him, but there was a side to her that worried him. While she was happy and jovial for the most part, there were times when she was dark and broody, much like her beautiful mother. It was almost sadistic, as he watched her try to catch a rabbit or bird, here or there, with the intentions of eating it. He understood she took after her Nightmare mother, but such a happy little foal wanting to devour a creature right after playing with it? Seemed cruel and unusual to him. Shaking his head, he continued on, searching the distance for his other loved ones.
He saw the spark and flare of his lover's hair before he noticed her dark body, in the dusk. Smiling, he couldn't help but beam proudly at seeing the rest of his family. He loved them, each and every one of them, and wouldn't trade them for the world.
Kindle was unamused by her Daddy's unanimated self. Usually he was bouncing around with her, racing across the lands, and goofing off, but today he seemed more serious and... adultish. Shaking her own head, she trampled the grass underneath her firey hooves and watched as the grass curled underneath where she walked. It was fun, having fire on her hooves, and she was proud of her Nightmare heritage. She'd grow up to be just like her Momma, but only not as serious, she would tell herself.
She noticed her father looking away at the distance and turned her small head to follow in the direction. Spotting her two siblings and her mother, she squealed happily and scampered off to meet them, leaving her Daddy to trail behind in her dust.

Aita had indeed been exausted dealing with 3 active foals. She was thankful for Daray's constant help. She did not wish to meet his 2 legger friend, seeing as she hated 2 leggers, she would have much rather made a meal of the girl. No, it was much better and safer for them if she remained behind. She laid down in the meadow just outside the cave. She needed some fresh air and the night was fast approaching. She would have to send Ember and Kaehi inside shortly. Daray had taken their oldest and first born, Kindle, with him. She worried constantly how Kindle was. She knew Daray could take care of himself and was indeed strong enough to protect Kindle, but she could not help the thoughts that entered her mind. What if the dragon kalona spotted them and decided to make a meal of their daughter?
"Mommmmmmy where's daddy?" two orangey-red eyes peered at her mother questioningly. Ember had wanted to go with her father but was left behind wih her mother and sister. She loved spending time with her father and found her mother too naggy and bossy for her liking. Her father was much more fun!
Aita's thoughts were interrupted by her daughter's voice and she gave an irritated look at Ember. She had asked this every few hours since he had left. Se flicked her flaming tail in annoyance, "I am sure he will be home soon Ember. He took a long journey to inform his friends you were born and he was now a daddy" Aita sighed. Ember was such a handful. The foal was frisky and energetic but also snappy if she did not get her way. Clearly she took after her father in every way but had a hint of her mother's hot headed temper.
Ember snorted and stomped the ground. "But I want to see daddy now!" She rolled her eyes and moved towards the cave entrance to watch for his return. It was then she heard her sister Kindle's excited squeal. Her head shot up and at the sight of her father she was on her hooves and racing towards him. "DADDY!!!!"

Keahi nibbled at the grass about her hooves, enjoying it's cool taste. Her tail flicked to and fro rapidly, making up for her general lack of movement as she ate; she had to constantly remain moving, her every action fueled by the hyper energy of a young foal. Even as she crushed the blades of grass between her tiny teeth, she pondered it's existance. Why did it grow here? What was it's purpose? Did it have a life, like her parents and sisters, or was it just something to feed them? Her mind, like her body, was constantly in movement, calculating everything and leaving no mental rock unturned.
"Daddy?" Keahi's ears perked up at her sister's yell, the mystery of the grass forgotten. She let out an excited whinny, and pushed off the ground with her hind hooves. She wheeled about and, pausing only to find her target, took off with surprising speed. The only thought that raced through her mind now was that of her father, this stallion who presented new opportunities for fun. Her mother... was constant, her presence as sure as that of the sun and the moon. Keahi loved her, yes, but she was mother. She would always be there.
Keahi picked up her pace a bit, chasing after her sister's fleeing form. "Daddy!"

Daray could only laugh as he watched his two younger daughters scramble towards him. What a wonderful homecoming it was, to have such bright and cheerful faces so happy to see him.
"Hello, my darlings!" He called out to them, his own grin spread wide across his face. He was indeed blessed... what a wonderful familiy to call his own.
He stopped his motion, preparing for the double impact of his daughters onslaught of affection. Ember, his fireball, was a handful on her own... she took far too much after himself, and he only hoped nothing would curb or hinder her energetic nature and love for fun. Keahi, his inquisitive one, was always questioning things, but he didn't mind the constant inquiries. She, out of all three of them, was the most eager to learn and try to understand the process of nature and the way things were. She was bound to be a wise mare as she aged. No doubt did she get that trait from her mother, for her could care less to learn, and was all about fun and enjoyment out of life.
Minding the two black and orange streaks heading his way, he glanced up to look towards the cave's entrance for his mate. He missed her the most of all, and hated being away from her, even for the short period he was gone. In the past, he was wild, free, and alone... now, he couldn't get enough of being around the ones he loved. Aita had bewitched him, and he would be happy to stay under her spell for the rest of his life.
Kindle snorted, ignoring her two sisters cry for their father. She had spent enough time with him... where was that mother of her's?
Looking past her siblings, she searched for the mare with flames for hooves and hair, eager to be by her mother's side. She wasn't going to be foalish and prance around like Ember and Keahi, not in front of her mother. When it came to Aita, she wanted to impress, and being foalish meant not acting like a mature mare. She was gonna be like her, after all, so why not start now and get a head start outta life?

Ember could hear her sister behind her and she pushed her legs faster. She was slower then her sister but she wanted to reach their father first and hoped her head start was enough to accomplish this.
Seeing her father's welcoming smile and words only served to make her race to him faster. Upon reaching him she thudded right into his chest and burried her nose into his mane. "I missed you daddy! Its not been so fun without you." She nuzzled a bit more before her teeth found a mouthful of mane and tugged playfully on it.
Aita's head turned to the direction Daray approached from and she smiled as the 2 foals ran to him. It was a relief for her to have him here to help watch over them, but she had dearly missed the stallion. As annoying as he could be at times, he had grown on her and she could not be without him.
She slowly got to her feet and trotted to follow her daughters to welcome Daray and Kindle home from their trip. She only hoped Kindle would not take too much if a liking to the two leggers and their ways. No daughter of hers should be bound and loyal to such a creature as these humans. Especially not Kindle. Kindle was alot like her mother in many ways and this pleased Aita very much. she loved all 3 of them, but Kindle would be her pride and joy of the 3...the one that would possibly carry on and be proud if her nightmare heritage.

Keahi's legs flew as fast as they could, her mouth opened slightly as she drew quick breaths to fuel her flight. She was almost there; so close! A cloud of light dust followed the little filly, her tiny hooved churning the ground. "Daddy, wel-" she stopped mid-sentence as she realized she was going too fast, and attempted to slow her pace to stop in front of Daddy, but instead went flying past him. She skidded to a halt some few feet to his rear, in a position close to sitting. She blinked once, twice, as though questioning how exactly she had come to be there.
She surveyed the area in front of her, then with a snort got to her feet. Keahi shook herself, then went at a leasurely trot back to where her father and sister were. She nuzzled the stallion's side as she passed, glowing red eyes shining with affection. "Welcome home!"

Daray shook his head, recollecting his thoughts. He had let his mind drift off to such a fond memory of the foals... his daughters, the loves of his life. Oh, how he missed the days of scampering youngesters eager to meet him when he returned home. Each of the three had grown into beautiful mares, like their mother, and each had taken on a personality that was all to themselves.
Ember had grown to look the most like her mother. Her dark black coat matched almost the exact hue of Aita's, save for the orange markings dancing across her back. Her hair was lit up, just like Aita's, but some of his own colors showed through her mane.
Keahi had turned into a flourish of colors, the brightest of the three girls. Her markings stood out, looking almost exactly like his except with the firey brightness of her mother's fire. Her skin, aside from the markings, resembled that of Aita's, as well as the colorings of her hair.
Kindle, however, showed the biggest mixture of the two parents. Her coloring was of the same of himself, but her markings were as dark as her mother's coat, outlined in his orange color. Her hair was long, like her mothers, but held both colors of her parents' manes. Her hooves, however, came directly from her mother's Nightmare genes, and she took pleasure on a daily basis to remind them that she had them.
Sighing, he smiled and turned back to look inside the cave, where his beautiful mate was. Aita, although a mother of three beautiful mares, aged more gracefully than any mother he knew of. She was still his gorgeous, hot-tempered Aita, and that would never change. At least, he hoped she wouldn't. Turning back around towards the outside world, he let out another heavy sigh.
Today, Daray had finally let the girls go out and find dinner for the family... their first chance to do something for the family all on their own. He hadn't wanted them to go, but knew that they had grown up, and it was time for them to start doing things on their own. Soon enough, each of them would be leaving their happy family to start one on their own, and his heart would ache when those days arrived. Oh, how he missed their foal days.
Kindle was prepared to do anything to keep from going back to the cave. She had energy to burn, and was ready and willing to use it.
"I think we should find something EXTRA tasty for Momma and Dad to eat," she argued, trying to come up with a good idea, "After all, Dad's always bringing home treats for us... so shouldn't we make tonight a special meal?"
She turned and looked at both her sisters. Typically, her sister Keahi was the easiest to convince to follow along with her. Ember, on the other hand, had a mind of her own and was constantly fighting for Daray's affection with Kindle. Kindle usually let her have it, though, and would always retreat back to her mother's side in the end.
"Sooo, what do ya think?"

Aita watched Daray as he stood at the cave's entrance, watching for their three girls. Indeed they had grown fast but they had grown into mares she could be proud of, especially Kindle. Kindle was her favorite, for she of the three most took after Aita. She had the nightmare flaming hooves and definitely the spirit and pride. Aita recalled watching Kindle as a foal play with a rabbit and then turning to kill it right after. It had made her smile and her heart fill with pride. Aita found herself thinking of a memory when Daray had done something similar when he killed his first buck, that last day of training with Shade.
She made her way to her feet and slowly walked over to stand next to her mate, her eyes scanning the area. Ember had a fancy for veggies and the greens and fruits, like Daray did. She did not seem to really take a liking to the meat they ate and so Ember would always make herself a meal of lucious leaves and delicious, plump berries. Anything she could find. She took after her father so much, even if she did look more like her mother.
Keahi, Aita was unsure of. She seemed to be a fairly normal foal. She didn't seem to really take a liking to eatting meat either but she had a personality all her own. She always seemed happy go lucky and maybe in a way she took after Daray.
Aita had taught Kindle how to hunt as well as Daray. Kindle would make a fine hunter with excellent skills. Always so full of energy like her father but with her mother's dark sinister side as well. Aita smiled and wondered what the girls first day out on their own to hunt and gather dinner would bring. She looked to Daray beside her, silently smiling at the tribal stallion.
Ember trotted along beihind her sister, stopping to smell the odd flowers here and there. She would had said hello to her forest friends but she knew they hid when Kindle was around. "What did you have in miond for extra tasty? I bet Dad would love a pile of delicious, sweet berries!" Excitement rang in her voice as she hunted for such berries, as big and as plump as she could find. She knew Kindle could handle their mother's meal. Their mother after all being a meat eatter and Kindle seemed to have the same taste for flesh and blood as their mother did.

Keahi followed along, lagging slightly behind her sisters. She was off in her own little world, having soon lost interest in finding food for their parents. A small leaf blew across her path. Her ears perked up and she lowered her head to examine the leaf, taking great pleasure in the brilliant emerald-green tone that hadn't diminished even in death and the fine veins of the leaf's surface. She even took time to admire it's shape. Why was it that leaves of different trees and plants were different shapes? She loved variety, as it provided knew things to ponder, but shouldn't there be a general form for all to follow? Some were similar to each other, and some were entirely different. Why...
Keahi looked up sharply, her ears swiveling back and forth. Her sisters were a little too far ahead... she broke into a quick trot to catch up, matching her pace to theirs once she was near.
"... berries!" Keahi heard the end of Ember's sentence, and her eyes lit up. Berries!
The mare wrapped her mind about finding food for their parents, now completely fixated on that one thing. She knew that if she allowed her mind to wander too much, she would end up so far behind that she wouldn't be able to catch up. She might even get lost.
... and anyway, who would notice if she plucked aside a few berries for herself, too?
