Xanadu - Kubla Khan a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground With walls and towers were girdled round: And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills, Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover! A savage place! as holy and enchanted As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted By woman wailing for her demon-lover! And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething, As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing, A mighty fountain momently was forced: Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail, Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail: And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever It flung up momently the sacred river. Five miles meandering with a mazy motion Through wood and dale the sacred river ran, Then reached the caverns measureless to man, And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean: And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far Ancestral voices prophesying war!
The shadow of the dome of pleasure Floated midway on the waves; Where was heard the mingled measure From the fountain and the caves. It was a miracle of rare device, A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!
A damsel with a dulcimer In a vision once I saw: It was an Abyssinian maid, And on her dulcimer she played, Singing of Mount Abora. Could I revive within me Her symphony and song, To such a deep delight 'twould win me That with music loud and long I would build that dome in air, That sunny dome! those caves of ice! And all who heard should see them there, And all should cry, Beware! Beware! His flashing eyes, his floating hair! Weave a circle round him thrice, And close your eyes with holy dread, For he on honey-dew hath fed And drunk the milk of Paradise.

::Eftemie::
Eyes: Jade Hair: Dark like a raven's wing Weight: 110 lbs. Height: 5'5" Race: Entirely Human
Likes: Purples, teals, golds: Pets which are friends to her more than animals: To laugh and play harmless pranks to make another smile
Dislikes: Forgetfulness: Clutziness: Being disregarded for being less than perfect: Crying
Eccentricities: She is entirely human, but feels a need to blend in. To do this, she often wears hats that look like ears, belts that have tails. Usually this is when she's the most nervous about something. She thinks that if a person can laugh at themselves, they can survive anything.
Strengths & Weaknesses: She loves to laugh and finds amusement in most things. Extremely forgetful, and clutzy. Frequently she trips over nothing, falling in a tangle. She has lists hanging everywhere in her apartment to remind her to do the things most people take for granted such as doing laundry, shopping, etc. She can manage this unless she forgets her list which usually has her own address written at the top to remind her of it. She can find it, but can't always remember the address itself.

The Story Begins...
Effe picked up her pan of dust, intent upon carrying it back to the shack she was staying in. She smiled as she walked down the hallway and through the plants outside. It was not the shortest way to where she was going, but it was the more convenient as fewer people walked this direction. She was always taking the odd way to things. Just to explore.
When she noticed the flowers beside her, she stopped suddenly, thinking that one or two would be pretty in a vase. There wasn't much else to dress up the shacks. Adjusting the way she was holding her pan of dust, she reached over towards a stem. Then she hesitated, frowning slightly.
"It moved?!"
"Surely not..."
It was just her imagination. Shaking her head, she reached again.
It moved again. Suddenly it seemed as if every plant there was moving in her direction.
Towards her?!
She stepped back looking for a place to go, her feet tangling as she tripped backwards. Managing to hang onto her pan of dust which settled back down quickly, she held it close to her stomach, her eyes large as she watched the movement in front of her.
It appeared to be...
"A walking garden?" She blinked.
"Impossible..."
Without thinking, Effe scrambled backwards on the ground, still holding onto her dustpan. She blinked as she found herself up against a rock.
Shaking herself and stretching slightly, the creature settled down in the path to watch her in amusement. She was the first to have found her.
Effe blinked as she watched her for several moments. Getting to her feet, she carefully held onto her dust, then she walked slowly closer to the creature. It was an adult. She'd not expected on there. When she didn't move away at her approach, Effe stopped to watch her another moment. She looked... amused.
She?
Uncertain how she knew that, Effe walked forward again. Closer, wanting to touch her. She was beautiful.
"You were hiding there and watching everything, weren't you?" she accused mildly, amusement in her own eyes. "You like hiding and watching as well as startling people."
The dragon merely watched her for a moment. Then she gently nudged the dustpan in Effe's hand.
"This one? Yes, he's mine. I wanted him." she laughed. "I imagine he's going to cause a stir when he begins to grow. I named him Royale." She reached out to touch the dustling adult in front of her.
She suddenly changed to a fleshy color near Effe's fingertips.
"Oh!" Effe said, pulling her hand away. She suddenly blinked. "You can change to match other things?!" Then she snickered. "That would be fun. Playing hide and seek when the others don't know you are playing with them."
The female looked even more amused as she watched the girl in front of her. Effe got the impression she was curious about her because she continually looked her over.
"Well, I won't disturb you further. And I won't try to pick the flowers even though they would be pretty in my shack." Effe laughed and then holding her dustpan turned away to walk down the path. The tread of footsteps behind caused her to stop after a few moments. Turning back she stared to see the dustling standing only a step or two away from her.
Effe blinked in surprise, but her lips twitched in amusement. "Are you following me?" she asked. She glanced around to see it there was anyone who this one belonged to. Maybe someone would know... If not, she'd take her home with her and then ask around since it appeared she was going to follow her anyhow.
When she noted noone around, she figured that she'd ask around later. She stared at the female a moment.
"Alright. Come along with us." she laughed. "You might as well stay with me until I figure out who and if you belong to someone." Effe gazed at her a moment and then decided that the female looked even more amused that Effe was allowing her to come along. She suddenly got the impression that it was never her choice in the matter. Then decided that was as it should be.
"This way." she sighed, shaking her head at herself.
When they got to the door, Effe opened it for the female to enter first. The dragon slowly walked in and made a point of examining the entire place. After a few minutes, Eftemie laughed when she curled up against one of the chairs obviously claiming it for her own. Setting her dustpan on the counter, she said, "Welcome to Xanadu." and then quoted...
"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where... "
((In the movies this would be where the record scratches skipping across and causes everyone to flinch. Or even fingernails on a chalkboard...
Imagine it. *smirks*))
"Xanadu?" she repeated and then nearly snorted laughing outloud. "Somehow I think this is the farthest thing from Xanadu, but that's the name I picked out. Eftemie's Xanadu."
A giggle burst from her lips once more. She'd heard of the dustling dragons and after seeing them, wanted one. It might take her awhile, but she just had the feeling that one would be here waiting just for her.
But even after several weeks, she had the basic furniture, the basic supplies. Well, the basics were all that were necessary. Weren't they? But Effe still thought of it as Xanadu. She had an empty vase on a small wooden table. It might seat three if she had three chairs. But two chairs was all she had. Unless one counted the chair that was in the living room beside the couch.
The basics of a kitchen nearby. Very basic but it suited her. She could invite a friend over for tea and eat comfortably at the table. A couple of chairs for sitting and talking other than at the table were nearby.
The bedroom door led off to the right as did the bathroom door. Neither were large but they worked and that was all she cared about. The place was neat and clean though in one corner she had a stack of books from floor to ceiling.
Walking over, Effe reached down to pet the dustling. She studied her for a few minutes noting that she looked very closely like the chair now. There was barely any difference. She shimmered slightly where Effe touched her.
"I suppose... you need a name. Hmm... what do I pick?" She walked over to a dictionary, but then stopped. What was that word she'd heard once? She remembered it was french meaning hidden or hidden one. A few minutes later she had remembered it.
"Cache`." she said. "That's it. It means 'hidden or hidden one'. That's what I'll call you. Cache`."
The dragon tilted her head as Effe repeated the word. It wasn't that she really needed a name or understood it, but she liked the word and the way the girl spoke to her. She nudged Effe's hand with her beak, then lay down closing her eyes.
Tomorrow was soon enough to find out who the dragon belonged to.
The next morning, she fed the dragon by offering her several different things. When she found something she seemed to like, the dustling ate. Then she looked for more. Stretching she worked her way around the room again, trying to make certain that everything was in its place. Or so it seemed to Eftemie.
"Cache`, would you like to come with me? I need to go talk to someone." Picking up her dustpan, she walked towards the door. For a moment she was tempted to leave it there for safekeeping, but then decided it might be safer with her. Especially if it grew while she was gone. That could be a problem as much as the little one waking up alone. She had wanted him and he'd stay with her until he was bigger.
Stopping in the doorway, she called to the dragon again. "Cache`, please."
The dragon stared at her for a moment, then she walked slowly forward stopping just outside when Effe shut the door. Watching the girl with curiosity as she began walking down the path, Cache` never moved.
Effe stopped looking back. "Cache`?"
The dragon gazed back for a moment in amusement as Effe held out her hand to her. After a moment more of hesitation, Cache` walked forward, stopping just a few inches from her.
"We are going there." Effe pointed at the building a short distance away, perhaps the same as two or three blocks in a town. She patted her head gently then began walking again.
Cache` merely watched her in amusement as Effe turned once more, raising an eyebrow as the dragon remained where she had been.
"Cache`? Coming?"
Amusement again, but she began walking towards her. This time when Effe turned to walk, the dragon followed her. Still amused.
Effe watched Feline a moment, trying to find the proper words to say what she needed to.
"Something strange happened yesterday when I was on my way back to my house with my dustpan. I thought at first I was seeing things in the plants, but then I found this adult female." Effe said, turning to indicate Cache`. Nothing stood behind her.
Cache` was nowhere to be seen. The dustling had entered the lab and walked over to the cabinets and was investigating. As she did so, she changed colors immediately to match the surfaces around her.
Scowling, she said, "Cache`...? Oh.. this might be difficult to find her if she followed me in. I was certain she would... She's.. different than the other ones I've seen.. She changes... I thought you might know her owner or more about her."

FelineOddity Feline rubbed her chin a bit, listening to Eftemie speak. "Oh? Huh.." she muttered, looking around her. "I see nothing. So, you mean, you think she's like a chameleon or something?" she asked, and began to look a bit livelier. "What a special Dustling that must be. Where did you find it, again? Near plants?" She seemed intrigued. Effe nodded, frowning slighlty. "Yes, like that. She was in the plants. I was going to pick a couple blossoms for a vase, but when I reached for what I thought was a plant, it moved. A moment later I was staring at a full grown dragon. I even rubbed my hand across her and she changed colors. She seemed very amused that I had even found her."
It was about then that the dustpan in Effe's hands began squawking. She blinked looking down at it. She had a baby dustling already.
"Are they supposed to change this quick?" she asked, cuddling the little thing to her. "I named the adult Cache`. I'm sure she's around here. It took some time to get her to follow me, but... she did. Cache`?"
The dragon continued investigating as she walked entirely around the counter. She shimmered slightly as she got to the same side as Effe and Feline were one. The tip of Cache`s tail was sticking out at the end, reverting back to its normal color. She watched both for a moment before moving her tail around to be hidden again. She was amused by their actions.FelineOddity Feline stared at the tail, peeking out from nowhere. "That's... odd. Anyway. Quite an interesting ability she's got, it's the first inherent ability I've ever seen. I'd love to experiment on her, but I have a feeling that won't be happening..." She cleared her throat. "Ahem. Yes, dusts do sprout babies within three days due to warmth and affection bringing them to life faster. However, wild dusts take forever to grow, without owners. Sad, really." "I'm not entirely certain. She seems to be amused for the most part at everything I do. She might come in just to play a prank on you now and then. I guess if you've not seen her before, then she most likely doesn't have an owner. I'll just see if I can get her to remain with me then." Effe said, watching a slight shimmer move along the side of the cabinet.
Cache` finished investigating what she wanted there and then walked towards them slowly. Her color shifted and adjusted as she moved, until she was right beside the two women. Reaching out, she touched Effe's hand with her beak.
Jumping slightly, Effe stared in surprise. She'd not realized the dragon was so close. Patting her, she watched her change color again. She looked entirely normal in a moment. And amused.
"A prankster, I think." she said, raising an eyebrow as her own lips twitched slightly in amusement.
FelineOddity Feline nodded and knew it wasn't uncommon for Dustlings to enjoy playing tricks on people. "I'm certain she has no owner, so if you're up to the task of owning her, I wish you good luck," she mused, and watched it carefully, her eyes wide with fascination. Eftemie nodded. "I'm not entirely certain how she will behave yet, but when I am, I'll bring her back around. I'll just let her stay with me as long as she seems to want to. You are welcome anytime. Although, I imagine that she'll make her rounds and play a few pranks now that she's been found by one person."
She petted Royale for a moment. "I should probably get this little fellow back home and fed him. I'm sure he'll be hungry soon." After leaving her information with Feline, Effe began the walk back to her house. Cache` followed right behind without hesitating this time.
Cache` immediately sat down beside the couch. Royale squawled irrately demanding attention. Effe laughed, cuddling him as she placed an assortment of food in front of him. Three things he turned away from almost as if they were not good enough for him. Two others he liked and ate.
He watched her for a moment, then nudged her hand as she stood beside him.
"Don't get used to eating on the counter, little fellow. This is only for the moment." she said, petting him with a smile. "Let's go see what Cache` is doing."
The adult dragon was lying beside the couch still. She looked asleep, but raised her head at their approach. When Effe placed the dustling next to her, she checked him over and then laid her head back down. Royale watched her for a moment and then curled up to sleep. His belly was full and that's all that mattered to him.
The next week or so was quiet for the small group. Cache` came and went as she pleased, but Royale liked to be pampered. Before too long he was romping around the room playfully, but always maintaining a modicum of propriety. Effe snickered several times to his dismay as he tried to "put on airs" as she called it. His name fit him far too well.
Cache` snorted around him from time to time when he did something. She seemed to find amusement in his actions and always countered him in some way. Just when he least expected it also. Other than Royale sulking from time to time, both dustlings managed to get along well enough.
Effe watched the gleam in the female dragon's eyes from time to time. She began to wonder what Cache` was plotting for Royale. Something was going to happen, she was certain of it. But when, where or how she could only guess.
When Cache` scratched at the door, Effe glanced up from her book. "Want out, do you? Don't get into too much trouble." she stated as the female shimmered slightly in coloration. "Not too many pranks or they will be chasing us down."
Cache` returned the gaze as if to say that she knew how far to push and that Effe should know that by now. With a snicker and shake of her head, Eftemie opened the door wide enough for her to slip outside.
Royale in the meantime had curled up in Effe's chair as soon as she had vacated it. It was now his throne.
