(( I have no idea why I just thought about that song xD ))
The leopardess sighed.
This wasn't a great day at all. Sometimes you felt like you just woke up the wrong way, and you still had to go do what you said. Perhaps it was always like this when you didn't sleep at home. She'd done it before, but it'd become so uncommon since she'd met Keone-- since she'd had a home. Even more after they had their son.
And this was why she was here today. She'd left yesterday to make the trip to the hunting grounds, for the first time ever, with her son. He was older now, he had to learn how to hunt, and it was time to learn it.
First attempts were always miserable, unfortunately, and this had resulted in her son, and her own, bad mood. She'd caught a small gazelle, without injuring it, and held it down till he got close. When she let it go for him to try and catch it himself, well, he got kicked in the face. Easy to say it'd been a horrible start.
"You'll get there eventually. " She said, after the fifth try, wich had been better, only he'd ended up with his nose in the ground this time.
Usiku was all but comforted. How hard was it?! She always brought over the big stuff. He snorted and rolled his shoulders, moving his nose as if testing if it still worked. He looked around the tall grass, trying to find something else. "Lets try again. "
"Wait, take a break. " She said laying down on her side. He may have gotten on the ground more, but she was the one that had to catch the stuff! And as good a hunter as she was, it was tiring. Of course, she remained in the tall grass, under whatever might hide her. Usiku still had to understand hiding himself.
"Fine. " He sighed, and moved to sit next to her. But he wasfar from just settling; he wanted to get this right. Karama didn't usually sleep on the ground, but she was tired, and soon, she'd decided a cat-nap wouldn't hurt, and dozed off.
So he took his leave.
Maybe she was messing him up, yeah. He could try this on his own! And he could do it, yup. So, trying to mimic his mother, the little leopard stalked through the grass, searching for anything her might be able to catch.

Unknown to the leopards, there was another predator stalking about, a demonic beast hidden among the grass. She was sleek, powerful, muscles etched into her white hide, eyes the color of blood burning with a hellish blaze. Mahakali, the bloody general, the lioness with a lust for murder and bloodshed.
She stalked silently, head held low in a a hunter's stance, dark talons extended to slice at the earth with each step. She had wandered a short distance from the blue god she followed, driven by her bloodlust, prowling for a victim to sink her claws into, blood to stain the earth beneath her paws.
Her maw parted in a snarl, ears twitching as a scent met her nose, the faint sound of pawsteps. Oh, what hapless creature had presented itself to the demon today?

]Still unnawares of the danger just beyond the corner, the green eyed juvenile crept foreward. His ears flicked when he thought he heard something, and he froze, looking around. Maybe that was a gazelle, or something! He didn't now the full line of sounds they could make, and he hadn't heard that many growls in all his life, let alone snarls.
He kept going towards the sound, and when he actually saw wht it was, he was terrified. The first sight was teeth. Not so wonderfull. He stumbled backwards, landing on his rump and looking up at the lionness in confusion and fear. Why was she doing that?! He felt like running or screaming out loud, but his legs were frozen, and suddenly his throat just refused to make a sound.
So instead, he just stared, awe and fear struck.

A wicked smirk crossed her maw, ears swiveling forward as her firey gaze fell on the small cub, tail lashing like a dancing cobra. There was evil intent etched in her features, in her expression, in each slinking step that carried the demonic creature closer to her prey.
"Well hello, don't you know it's dangerous for cubs to be out here alone?"
Her words dripped from her jaws like acid, falling to the ground beneath her paws as if they would bore into the earth itself. Dark talons sank into the dirt as she stalked, circling the small creature, fangs bared hungrily.
A moment must have seemed like an eternity before the terror settled on her haunches before the small creature, one paw raised with talons flexing, a sadistic glint in her eye.
"So tell me," she lowered her paw, talon tracing through the air inches away from the young one's neck, "why are you alone?"

He stared at the lionness as she got closer, ears pricking to hear her, but still too frozen to do anything. Then her claw came close to his neck, and he stumbled foreward, turning around as quickly as he could.
"I-i'm not alone. " He blurted, his tail hanging pathetically, ears back. He didn't have a good feeling about this. "Whatareyougonnado. " He said, not caring to put any spacing between his words, or any intonation other than fear.
Orange eyes opened, and a dark tail flicked. "Usiku? " The leopardess mumbled, still unnawares of her missing son. "Come on, lets try again. " She said, pulling up onto her paws and stretching. But no answer came. She looked around and frowned.
Where had the kid gone?! She snorted. There was no desire to call his name out loud, she wanted to remain quiet. So Karama got up, and as quiet as she usually was, vanished into the grass.

Demonic laughter spilled from her jaws, creeping around her like a dark and chilling fog, a true nitemare as her father before her. But unlike her father, Mahakali was not above murdering a child, rather she would revel in the hellish glory of such evil.
"Wouldn't you like to know."
But evil though she was, Kali was not foolish, her ears flicking for any nearby sounds. If the cub was not alone it's parents must be nearby. And though her size meant one adult leopard would be no problem, she'd have trouble if there were two. She'd have to be cautious, but she wouldn't let this cub know that.
"Really, well you look very alone to me."

Okay. Now he was screwed. The young leopard looked around nervously, trying to develop an escape plan. Now the lionness was between he and where he'd last seen his mother. There were no tree around. Save for one that they'd slept on a while away, she wasn't blocking that, but how would he outrun this?
But he couldn't just give up. He backed away a few paces, looking fearfully up at the lioness. Then he turned. And ran as fast as he could.
Grass slapped him in the face as he ran, and he was quite sur ethe lioness would come after. He didn't want to look back either way. It was perhaps dumb, not screaming. Then maybe mother would come. But now, running, that wouldn't come out well, and now that he WAS running, he couldn't stop.

The lioness fell into a hunter's crouch, taloned paws stretched before her, tail flicking, powerful muscles coiled to spring at any moment. Red eyes glistened with intent, jaws parted to reveal terrifying fangs. Oh he was trying to run away, how cute and how futile.
She waited a moment, just long enough for the little cub to think he was safe, to give him that false hope that he could escape the monster; murder was so much more satisfying when the victim was tortured first. It was a brief reprieve, and all too soon, the beast lunged, limbs propelling her forward, a horrifying snarl tearing through her jaws, grass tearing with a sicking snap in her wake.
It would only take a few strides and she would be on him, menacing fangs bared for the strike, talons lusting to tear through his young hide.

He heard her paws before anything, comming after him. The grass was moving quickly around her, prooving the speed, and he was quite sure he could hear the monster snarl, or whatever she did.
And he screamed. He wasn't sure what sound he'd made, he just did it. Whatever "it" was. The juvenile stumbled pathetically at the wrong time, turning to watch the creature approach all to quickly, the claws and the fangs and the red eyes. And it was so close. And there was nothing he couldd do but close his eyes and wait. But he heard something different from a lions growl or roar. He heard something alot more leopardlike.
"Mom! " He squeaked awkwardly, still too shaken by fear.
She wasn't sure what she was doing. She had seen her cub, she had heard him, and then, she didn't see right. She didn't think right. All she wanted to do was to get in the way of whatever was after him.
So a blur of brown and white hurtled out of the bushes with that very different leopard roar, ears flat, teeth bared, claws out as if she were pouncing down on something for a tree. It may seem pathetic, a leopard against a lion, but this was her son. Her cub. And she wouldn't just sit back and hope for the best.
She wasn't sure what she hit, but there was the sactisfactory feel of fur on her paws, perhaps the shoulder, side or hidquarters. Whatever would do. any would perhaps snap the monster away from the cub.

A growl tore from the monster's maw, her lunge broken by the force of impact, jaws snapping closed, nearly catching her own tongue in the powerful bite meant for the small cub. With a shake of her head, the lioness spun on her heals, turning to level her firery gaze at whatever at struck her.
So the cub hadn't been alone, this adult had to be its mother, there was no other reason a leopard would be foolish enough to attack a larger lion. Well, that was fine, it would be far more satisfying to tear this leopard to shreds as she tried to protect her son, and then murder the cub afterward. And if the cub escaped in the meantime, well she still got her bloodshed.
"Giving your life to save your cub? How noble, I'll make sure you're not disappointed!"
Her words ended in a snarl as she leapt forward, charging at the leopardess with all her hellish fury, her intent much more deadly than before. She intended to take this creature's life, dark talons flashing in hints of sunlight like poisoned daggers, massive paws falling toward the creature's eyes, jaws snapping at the mother's shoulder.

The leopardess landed heavly on her paws infont of Usiku after the collision, but she recovered quickly, ears down and teeth bared, short fur as much on end as it could possibly get.
Ïts better to try than be a coward. "She hissed, never giving up the chance to throw an insult at anything. As the lionness moved, she kicked her son away to wake him up and to start running.
Even though leopards were a bit more agile than the heavier lions, the getting Usiku away had slowed Karama down, and as she tried to jump away, hard teeth latched onto a hind paw, and she got slammed against the ground. She twisted her body, hising at the lion then using her jaws as an impulse, swinging herself up to Mahakali's shoulders and trying to get a grip, with claws and teeth.
Hewas suprised, to say the least, when he was kicked away by his mother. The juvenile landed on his side, any possible air he'd gathered knocked out of him. He scrambled to his paws as he saw the lion lunge, and panicked, almost feeling releived when mother so swiftly leapt away, and then landed.. terribly.
Green eyes became even wider whenhe saw the leopardesses blood, her paw in the lion's terible jaws, and he backed away, tryin to fight back the reality of all this. He knew he should run.
But it was too hard.

The instant fangs touched flesh, the lioness' jaws slammed closed in a powerful bite, muscled neck pulling her neck into a vicious shake, the motion meant to tear through the leopardess' hide and muscle, to break bones and render the limb useless.
"Mortals only speak of courage before their deaths! You will find you've discovered it too late!"
She barely had time to savor the rich metallic taste of blood in her mouth, the creature was determined. Delightful, that would make the breaking all the more satisfying. How much greater the despair would be after a desperate fight. But the lioness remained calm, showing nothing but her own demonic nature, she had no reason to fear, even against a desperate parent.
A sharp hiss escaped vampiric jaws as talons tank into her own hide. The lioness' head snapped to face Karama, jaws parted, fangs prepared to strike at whatever she could reach, one paw raised to slash, her body arched in a powerful buck to shake the leopardess from her back.

It hurt. Quite a lot. But she was smart, and even as the lion shook her head, she tried to follow that motion as well as she could to evoid worse damage. it didn't help that much, but at least, soon she was released. Or her paws was.
She wanted to stare at it and dwell in the pain, to make sure she'd be able to walk again with it, but there was no time. She moved to get a better grip on the lions back, knowing here she would be safer from the terrible claws of the beast, even if her injured paw was held pathetically against the white fur of the adolescent, paining her fur red. To her, hanging on would be perhaps easier; leopards did it pretty often.
So she used that to her advantage.
Leopards paws would help here, so she dug her claws as well as she could into Mahakali for a grip, hissing right back at her when she looked back. "You'll never discover courage if you need to kill cubs to be assured of it! " She growled. As angry as she was, insulting her was sort-of soothing, like venting, even with all this aggression going on.
The buck was half succesfull, at least; she couldn't do much with that injured back paw, and a bit of her balance was lost, but this just resulted in her claws tearing more against the white and red lions fur. She flashed a quick look to her cub again, willing him to leave then trying to bite down into the lion again.
What was he doing? It was his fault. He looked at them now, the creature was so much larger, stronger than his mother, and she could have ran, but he wa shere, keeping her back, and it was his fault. It was all his fault. Maybe if he had stayed the creature wouldn't have found them. Or if he had just hunted better they could have gotten home.
Surely he could do something? He caught his others eye once more, and panicked. He knew she wanted him to run, and she was trying to be strong, but he could still see the pain. Would she die? What if she didn't get out of this? Maybe he could do something, yes. He could find help. And then they could just.. go home.
So he ran, vanishing into the grass, unknowing, or at least, forgetting, that he didn't know his way around the savannah, at all.

The lioness didn't flinch, despite the burn as talons sliced her own hide and the warm liquid that stained her pelt; perhaps all sadists truly are masochists as well. Instead she laughed, that mocking, bone-chilling, fur ruffling laugh from the depths of the abyss.
"You mistake my intentions. I couldn't care less about your courage or proving my own. No, this is merely for my own enjoyment, for the pleasure of spilling innocent blood."
Mahakali was not a small lion, she was a massive beast, already passing the size of a normal adult despite her adolescence. She had inherited her father's size and her mother's powerful muscles, and her uncle's disposition. With a vicious snarl, dark talons lashed out again, reaching for that maimed back paw, tail lashing as her body twisted, her weight shifting to throw the creature to the earth.

"Ah, thats good. I thought you were just wrong in the head. " The leopard sneered, trying her best to sound confident, but she was well aware; this was a fight she would loose. Right now, despite the monster's twisting and reaching, she took a moment to survey the bit of land she could see through the grass, mountains rising in the far distance, the tall grass. This might as well be the last landscape she'd see.
She was safest up here, but she could hang n. At the first touch of a clas on her injured paw, she pulled it away, closer to her body, then launched off, landing then backing away to get at least a bit of distance, but she was sure, a strike would come.
Right now, despite injury, she pressed on her inured paw; she had no choice. If she wanted an even remote chance of escaping, she needed to ignore the pain for now, the stinging and throubbing that came from her mangled back paw.
Her orange eyes gazed unflinching at the red ones of the lioalmost falling so many times till he reached as far as he could go.ness, she couldn't have fear right now.Her son was escaping. That was what mattered.
He was escaping from claws, yes, but there was no relief to come. He was just running, and running, looking desperately for anything that could offer help.
What if she was already gone? What if he didn't find anyone? What if he would be too late? What if there was nothing he could do? He could haveclimbed at least five trees by now, but only now, further away, our of earshot, he did, scrambling up, not even caring to gloat to himself about something he normally would, of having ran so fast.
He wiggled up onto a high branch, and screamed as loud as he could; wich, due his current state, wasn't so loud. There was no answer. Nothing. He scrambled down, falling half the way, then continued to run. And he didn't know, he was just getting himself lost in the vast savannah.
