Opening:

It was not the best of times. I was cold and hungry, with little to my name but a 1 bedroom apartment with the rent far over due and this old coat that's hanging over my shoulders. People said that my art was to graphic. No one wants to buy what's really out there I suppose. I did at least get the 500 dollar pay check from my publisher. But would it really be enough? Sure it could pay the rent and maybe feed a bachelor for a week or two, but what about her? Could I feed her? Provide for her?
It was not the worst of times. I met Katheryn Ann Jacobs 6 months ago at a coffee place that I frequented. She was getting pissed at the lady behind the counter because she kept on getting Katheryn's order wrong, so I stepped in and actually jumped over the counter to make it myself. She said thanks and gave me 2 things: her number and her name. She took my heart though. She now has her head resting in my lap. You should see her, seriously, you should. She has the smile of heaven and eyes so entrancing you would think they were born from lust its' self.

I suppose you want to know what my name is too. My name's Eric. I had a dead end job before I started selling my art work. I hated that, selling my art work that is. Ya' know why? It's because their like my kids. The blank canvas, the different colors and brushes. Alone they are nothing but themselves, but with my help I turn them into something more. I love them as much as I love Kat. Maybe even more so.
I do have friends. Three, in case you were wondering. One guy, John, he's as nutty as a bag of trail mix, but he's a funny guy. A lot of people like him. Then there's Mike, who's an a** sometimes. This one time he was staying the night and shaved my head clear bald. Don't get the wrong impression though, he still will pick up the tab at the bar if your having a crappy day. The last guy's Peter. I feel sorry for him sometimes. He has depression and stuff. He's shy, nice, goofy( one he warm up to you), and never had so much as a kiss from a girl and he's 23 to boot.

Aside from some spelling and grammar, I think that this is a good idea, but the second part seems to stray from the idea you were supposed to be getting at with the intro.
