It had only been a few days since the crocodile attack, and already Kukuru was warming up to his new traveling companion. He hadn't seen Makuu in a while (pff, his brother had probably nicked off somewhere for a few days now that Kukuru had a 'girl' with him), but he resolved that his brother had been out scouting for traces of a herd.
Or, maybe Makuu was purposely leaving the two together, alone. For any reason, his brother had been nowhere to be seen.
Kukuru blinked, and shook the thought from his head. What was he thinking? Kunoki was one amazing girl, he'd give her that, and he did... well, he liked her. She was a good friend, after all, and they'd thwarted a crocodile's attack together. They'd shared conversations, of course, but these were often about how nice the day was, or whether they'd find a herd anytime soon. Nothing too wonderful. And still, he led the way, trying to find where his brother had set up camp. This had gone on all day.
Now, the stars had begun to come out, and dotted the sky like fireflies. They'd had to rest. Soon, the night would be too black to continue.
Kukuru sighed, and lay his head down on his hooves, casting his pale blue eyes to the stars. How beautifully they shone, sending beams of light peircing through the darkness.
'I wonder if we'll ever find out where we came from,' he thought, rolling over to one side, 'Makuu and Kunoki. And me.'
He paused, and decided that, since he couldn't find Makuu, maybe he'd show Kunoki one of his favourite spots, where, as a child, he'd looked to see the stars. He'd show her that... that is, of course, if she wasn't already asleep.
Cautiously, he called out her name, and awaited an answer.
(( >D YAY FOR LOVE AND ANGST. Let me vomit now, Kukuru. XD))

Kunoki thought that she'd never been so happy as she was now, traveling around with Kukuru. It was so..strange, being around somebody else, but as she'd spent more time with Kukuru, she'd hesitantly decided that it was a good thing. Now, she didn't know if she'd ever be able to go back to being on her own. Not now that she had a..a friend, like this.
Now, she lay thinking. It had been a few days since they had met..and since that day, when she'd felt so..well, connected to him, they'd barely spoken at all. Only smalltalk. She wondered if Kukuru was having regrets about asking her to come along with him. She wondered if she should offer to go, no matter how much she hated the idea.
And then, she heard him call her, and was on her feet, heading his way- ah, there. Quietly, she trotted over to him and lay herself beside him. "Yes?" She ignored the way that being close to him made her heart pound as if she'd been running- it was only because seeing him reminded her of their close call with the crocodile, after all...or at least, that's what she told herself. "Is something wrong?" Quickly, her eyes scanned the area around them for predators..but for the time being, at least, she saw nothing.(( xD I think it's cute. And don't worry- Kunoki will cheer him up, hopefully. ))

Kukuru's eyes lit up as he saw Kunoki's form slink through the darkness, and at once he smiled. She was awake, and his muzzle stretched into a grin.
"I'm glad!" he laughed, though he kept his voice low, so as not to startle any sleeping animals nearby, or to alert any predators of their whereabouts, "See, I... I thought that, if you're not tired..."
He paused, and flashed Kunoki a grin.
"Would... you like to come stargazing with me, Kunoki?" he knew it didn't sound too manly, but hey, the night sky was a very interesting thing in his eyes, "I know the perfect place. And look how clear the sky is tonight. It'd be a shame to waste it!"
His little tail gave a brief wag, in a way that mimicked a dog - his only real habbit learnt from his old canine family. And when he wagged his tail, he was really happy.

Kunoki smiled sweetly as she again listened to Kukuru stumble and stutter for words, although her smile faltered as she felt her heart attempt to jump to freedom at his grin. She had to close her eyes for a moment.
Gods, he was adorable.
As his eager question reached her ears, his grin became reflected upon her own face. "I would love to.." she told him softly, bringing herself once more to her feet and stretching. A part of her whispered that she just wanted a chance to be close to him, in the dark...to know him, and find a way into his heart. But she shook those whisperings off with a frown. Goodness, what was wrong with her tonight?
"The sky is beautiful tonight...So let's go!"

Kukuru's eyes brightened.
"R...really, now?" his grin now stretched as wide as his lips, and his tail wagged slightly, "Awesome. Alrighties, I'll take you to the place. It's just beyond here, Kunoki..."
He nodded to her, and beckoned her to follow with a directional flick of his ear.
"It's really amazing up there, I'm telling you..." he started speaking more quickly, clearly excited, "It's seriously brilliant. Just brilliant. My Father showed me it when I was real small..."
He stopped, and blushed.
"That is, my guardian at the time. A dog, he was... not my real Dad. But, well... that's not the point," his eyes almost lit up, "The point is that it's just fascinating up there. And you know, it's not something that should be missed. Come 'ere!"
And he broke into a few bounds, stopping once or twice and willing her to join him.
"You know..." he looked up at her, in wonder, "I've never run like this before. But it's just coming to me. Springing... up and down."
It was kinda' fun.

A dog? Kunoki blinked a bit at that, but followed behind him all the same, smiling a bit. He was so excited...and that excitement was beginning to rub off on her, it seemed, for she quickened her step. She wasn't about to ask him about the dog that he called Father...not when family was such a touchy subject (from what she could tell) and she didn't know him all that well. She didn't want to upset him, even in a small way.
She giggled softly as Kukuru leapt and sprang and ran forward, pausing to watch him, before tilting her head to one side curiously. "Honestly?" She asked in disbelief, a slow grin moving over her face, "It's a wonderful thing to do...makes your blood move more quickly through you, and makes you feel alive..." she positively beamed now, taking a graceful leap forward, her nose pointed toward the nighttime sky, then turned to look at him. "if I knew where we were going, I'd offer to race you there...but since I don't...lead on, Kuku~."

(Sorry for the post delays, Aut! >< *briiiicked* D: School's getting really busy this month. xD Topic tests, assessments and whatnot. D: After this week, I should be relatively work free, though. ;D)
Kunoki's enthusiasm seemed to be contagious, because within an instant, Kukuru was grinning from ear to ear. He felt lighter than he'd ever felt in his whole life - faster, stronger, much more athletic. As soon as it had come to him, he'd known it... this was how he was meant to run, how he was born to run.
"All along, I've been creeping along the ground!" he laughed, whilst he lead the way, "Oh, gosh, just what have I been missing out on?!"
It was as if his hooves were elastic. Energy pulsed through him, and he enjoyed the feeling of the wind sailing past, kissing his cheeks as he sprang forward. Forward, forward, forward. This one thought repeated itself in his head, and he pushed himself, flying through the night, Kunoki by his side.
"One day, Kunoki, we'll have to race eachother! I'll take your words as a challenge," his eyes gleamed mischieviously, mid-bound, "And, let me tell you, I may be a learner, but I'm a fast one. I'll getcha' on the race back!"
And so, he leapt onwards, each leap taking him further and further away from the 'camp', and closer to their destination. All along, Kukuru found himself admiring Kunoki beside him... her bounds were so graceful and well executed, and although he was getting the hang of it, his own bounds were still quite jerky and awkward. He stumbled a few times, but managed to keep his cool and push himself back up, often pretending in front of Kunoki that he'd meant to fall for purposes of amusement, but hiding a guilty smile all the while.
Time seemed to melt away into nothing but the stillness of the night, and Kukuru could not shake the peculiar feeling of isolation - as if they were the only two beasts in the whole savannah. Was nobody else about on this night? The only sounds he could hear was of their hooves occasionally skimming the ground, kicking up dust, and Kunoki's breathing.
Then, a large rock emerged from the darkness. Kukuru's eyes brightened, and he tensed, throwing himself towards it with as much effort as he could muster.
"To that rock, Kunoki," he cried, and increased his speed in order to get a headstart, "C'mon, slowpoke! Here's our perfect chance for a match! Race you, Kuuuuunoooookiiiii!"

(( It's fine, sweetie. x3 I understand. ))
Kunoki blushed lightly as she watched him stumble, again marvelling over just how adorable he was. Adrenaline dashed through her veins, and she found herself bouncing and kicking a bit, just to expell some of the energy...but found that it was quickly replaced by more. She laughed delightedly as he voiced his claim toward being a quick learner, a merry light coming to her eyes.
Spending time with Kukuru made her feel so...alive. Like she was very young again, and yet...grown-up as well, for the part of her that she would not voice- the part of her that prompted her to want to be close to him, to snuggle up to him during the nighttime...the part of her she suddenly realized, wasn't just her imagination, that she probably would wish for such things even if there were others that she was friends with. She herself stumbled a bit at this thought, surprised, but caught herself before she fell.
Speeding onward as if fleeing her own conciousness, she barely caught Kukuru's challenge, but as she saw him dart off, she gave an indignant yelp, and dashed after him, bounding and running for all that she was worth. If she couldn't win (and she didn't know if she could), then she would at least catch him, she decided. She would not be left behind.

All in all, Kukuru too seemed to loose track of the competition. Gosh, the idea of winning and 'proving himself worthy' in front of her eyes seemed to slip away into the back of his mind... and soon, he too was thinking about other things. What they'd do when they reached the hill, for example. What star he'd point out to her. If she'd think strangely of him for being so immersed in the night sky. If she'd be bored.
If she'd be so bored, that she'd leave his side to wander elsewhere...
Ah, what was he thinking?! He brushed the thought away with a flick of his head, and continued on. All that mattered was that he would show Kunoki a great night out... and he'd do his best to make sure that they had fun.
And what could be more fun than sitting on a hill on such a beautiful night? Ha. After this thought Kukuru could almost picture his brother saying, sarcastically, "What could be more fun? Pffff... getting mauled by a rhino. Or anything else." He almost shrank back. It... wouldn't be too boring, would it? After all, he and Kunoki were friends.
Friends.
So, why were his cheeks burning? It was because of the running, right? It was because he was puffed out, and tiring from the long run. That was it, right?
Right?
Stumbling a bit, he pulled to a slow stop at the base of the hill, puffing and grinning, tail whirring behind him at high speeds. Looking forward to see Kunoki, he realised that he hadn't seen who had burst over the 'line' first. They'd been sprinting there, almost side-to-side, and now... awww, gosh, now it didn't matter. Winning or losing didn't seem to hold any importance now.
"We're here," he announced with a flick of his ears, "The Great Hill. It's an awesome place, and I seriously think that you'll find it amazi..." he paused, and his smile brightened, "Well, hey, you'll see when we get there. C'mon, Kunoki, let's get up there and look at those stars! Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
He brushed beside his friend eagerly, and at her touch he felt that hot feeling again.

(( : emotion_facepalm : My turn to apologize. xD; Got busy with rehearsals and midterms. ))
Kunoki gave an elated yelp as they reached the hill, her eyes shining with the joy of the run. Her chest heaved slightly, but she was grinning as widely as anything. Oh, how she loved spending time with Kukuru! Even if it had just been the two of them going out for a sprint, she would have had fun, she thought, but..there was more yet to come. Star-watching with Kuku...
She felt a funny twist within herself at the thought, and for a moment wondered if perhaps she'd been running too fast. She considered asking to sit for a moment (just in case..she didn't want to pass out on him now, of all times), but decided against it, a part of her recognizing that it wasn't fatigue that tugged at her heart.
"I think you won.." she murmured, although she hadn't really seen who had. She flicked her ears back at him in a subconcious imitation, and smiled happily. "I don't think the stars are going to go anywhere, Kuku." she added with a laugh that was a fraction too loud as he brushed up against her. She didn't really mind his enthusiasm, but couldn't help teasing him about it anyway. But to show that she was only teasing, she gave him a gentle nuzzle and skipped forward, up the hill a few paces. "But let's go anyway. Just not too quickly..I'm a bit tired, actually. All that running.." she giggled softly, and a bit sheepishly. "I've a bit of work to do before I can beat you in a race. But I will, you just wait."

Kukuru chuckled.
"Well, hey, who knows? They could fly away. My father used to refer to the stars as fireflies, like a lot of people do. And hey, fireflies don't hang around forever... they only glow ultra bright at a certain time," his muzzle stretched into a grin, "At night, of course. Night, night, night!"
There was no doubt that excitement's strong grip had wrapped itself around Kukuru, and he couldn't help but speak fast, bounding and bouncing about as he did. He calmed, however, as he saw a strange tiredness in Kunoki's eyes - a gentleness, really... and it seemed to be contagious. Maybe it was because he was concerned, or maybe he just didn't want to leave a bad impression, but he slowed down and calmed himself at once. He absolutely was loving being by Kunoki's side, trudging up the slope. Maybe it was because he had never had a friend before. It was certainly a wonderful feeling.
"Alright, sorry about my, uh, outburst of energy," he laughed softly, and his body shook lightly, "I tend to get real... nuts when I'm out with a friend like this. Sometimes, my brother's all like, "Calm down, Kukuru! What are you on, Treeroot or something?!", because I hardly ever slow down. Haha, I can get pretty hyped up, yeah, but... you know, it's been a long time since I've... done something with someone special."
He blinked, and went red.
"Uh, slip of the tongue! Slip of the tongue!" he reared on his hind legs a little, and waved his hooves around as if to rewind time, "I meant... well... It's been a long time since I've done something special with someone. Not... not that you're not special, 'cause you are, but everyone is special... you know what I'm sayi-" he paused, and his ears fell back, "Uh... and-and-and, weeelll... HEEEEEEEY, we're almost to the top! WHOAH, IT'S AWESOME UP HERE!"
It was a very sudden subject change, and Kukuru knew it. But, despite the obvious exaggeration, it was quite stunning up the top. The stars were brighter while they were up high, and the moon seemed to light up the whole hilltop. Quite cautiously, he trotted over and perched himself near the edge of the hill.
"It's quite a long way down for a hill," he chuckled, "A fall from here wouldn't kill you, but you'd certainly feel it in the morning. Come and look, Kunoki. It's awesome up here. You can see it so clearly. There are a few clouds, but it's pretty great despite that. Nothing's ever perfect, but the night is certainly near-perfect."
(( Dx Got your PM. And let me say, Aut, you're <333333. *snugs* LET ME MAKE SOME KUKULOVE ARTS TO THANK YOU FOR BEING SO CARING. Dx <333 And... >D Hokay. I'm on SoA un-hiatus. ))

Kunoki grinned at Kuku's reference to the stars a fireflies, and she tilted her head back to look at them and consider. And...yes, she realized, they did look like them....twinkling and everything. But the idea of the stars flying away was a silly one, for she had never seen a star move even a little bit. But hey, who knew. Maybe Kukuru could even move the stars..
As they walked together, Kunoki sighed in contentment, leaning companionably against him. She giggled at his babbling about being energetic, preparing to reassure him that she was the same way some of the time, and that she didn't mind it at all..when she caught the last of what he'd said, and stumbled a little. Someone..special? For some reason, those words make her cheeks heat, and her head drop just a bit. He was special to her, too...more than he probably knew. But as he stammered and stuttered, swearing to a slip-of-the-tongue, she wondered...perhaps he truly had just made a mistake. Pausing as he trotted ahead, she nodded in agreement with what he'd said and carefully (oh yes, it would hurt to fall from here) made her way over to join him. Sitting beside him, she even dared to lean against him as she tilted her head back, skimming the stars with her heart loud in her ears. This was near-perfect.
(( Sosososo sorry for taking so long. ;;' I suck. ))
