Yes, love in all forms is encouraged. Attachment in all forms is discouraged. Knowing the difference is important, though it is sometimes difficult.

Oh yea, I don't believe buddhism has a problem with sexuality. That doesn't mean that some people who practice Buddhism don't have a problem with sexuality but so what.

Buddhism does not discourage or encourage homosexuality, but it is excepted. since showing compassion and tolerance is one of the main beliefs in buddhism, sexual discrimination is not allowed. The dalai lama himself said that he opposes violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and that respect, tolerance, compassion, and the full recognition of human rights should be shown to every living being.

but like raven heart said: there can be some people who practice buddhism who might have something agaisnt homosexuals

i believe in what marquis said: love is love
if you find happiness with the person you are with who is of the same sex, then go aghead and be with them, after all isn't happiness what we seek in life? But be aware of attachment, happiness from attachment is not real happiness and will not last.

Western Buddhism tends to be very much at ease with gay and bi people. Their are even special buddhist groups for them. But many older asian traditions can take issue with it. Nothing in the core teachings of the buddha is anti gay.

I actually have researched varius religions and their treatment of homosexuality for my school's GSA.

buddhism as the religion and the majority of religious leaders in buddhism that i know of have often been quoted with compassion towards the homosexual community, such as the Dali Lamma, various Celebrity Buddhists, and a local temple leader Annata Brad Wilson.

Other practitioners are a completely different story, in most of the Indo-Chinese penninsula it is veiwed by a majority of the population as immoral, as it is in india, Japan, and varius other heavily buddhist populated countries.

in terms of the government, and the people probably the best place to live while being gay is either Canada, and in certain Urban areas of the United States, (Toronto ON, ferndale MI, San Fransico CA (which has a very very large buddhist population) and another good region of the world is Western Europe, in the urban areas especialy.

to be honest it really depends on the culture of the region, and how the religions are meshed into that culture.

im sorry that is really confusing, sociology and cultural semiotics are very complex.

That is true. In general, you'll find Buddhists to be more open-minded on the subject than individuals of most groups, but there is leeway for some to argue that homosexuality is sexual misconduct (largely due to scriptural silence on the subject and traditional societal mores that aren't necessarily rooted in Buddhism).

I'm sorry for my ignorance in the matter, but are there many gay Buddhists??? I mean I am gay, and one of the many reasons I have become a Buddhist is because it is a very open minded and accepting religion.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 23, 2008 8:43 pm

Buddhists tend to be more open minded to this, but in the time of the Buddha, I'm sure it wasn't exactly a hot issue, as it is today. Buddhism isn't about complicated dogma, Buddhism is about waking up. If being homosexual is keeping you from waking up, then it's looked down upon.

My high school had GSA too, but it was so disorganized, it just made gays look worse in our town. (it was a small, Christianity dominated town, but there were actually a lot of gays there...)
