Squall had been wandering these lands for what felt like months, and still he had not found Rinoa.

He hadn't found anyone he had known before, actually. And that worried him. What if they were all scattered across times and worlds? Forced to take up an existence in a multitude of forms? These thoughts whirled through Squall's mind, making the former SeeD's walk anything but peaceful.

Little did he know he was about to come face to face yet again with the bane of his existence, his greatest rival, his fiercest enemy.

Wandering around hadn't ever been exactly Seifer's specialty. No, the aggressive male preferred to have a purpose as he moved-- and thus, today's purpose was to seek out someone else he might be able to toy with. After all, the ex-head of the Balamb Disciplinary Committee hated being bored.

There weren't a multitude of amusing individuals around here though. In fact, the vast majority were boring and not worth anyone's time, least of all Seifer's--

Though he wouldn't be boring. He could always be counted on for a good laugh. And there he was, wandering aimlessly about like a lost lion cub. Squall Leonhart, Seifer's old sparring partner. Rival.

Someone whose buttons could always be pushed so easily.

Trotting up from behind Squall, Seifer considered the other for a moment before speaking. "So, lost my ex-girlfriend?"

((...Damn.))

Why did he have to run into someone he not only didn't particularly want to talk to, but rather wished to avoid? At least, Squall had a little ammunition. He thought.

"You would know, offering her to Adel." A leonine tail twitched. "I might still be searching for Rinoa, but I was never a puppet. Can you say that?"

((Let's see what he says to that.))

((OOC: Heh, I put the mental dialog in parentheses so people don't make the mistake of replying directly to it. xD; ))

((xD I usually just assume that whatever's not in quotes is mental dialogue. xD))

"Of course," Seifer smirked as he moved so they were walking side by side. "I always knew what I was doing. Following what I wanted to do. You were the good boy, playing soldier, weren't you? Following orders just because they were given to you? I would think that would make you the puppet, cub." Not that it mattered to Seifer much. He'd just rather provoke Squall than let this drop.

This was starting to feel uncomfortably familiar. Squall bit back a sigh as he kept his distance lest either were tempted to lash out. While back...there...they had been nearly an even match, with Squall perhaps even the superior, here Seifer had the advantage with those strange wings of his.

"It was our choice after defeating NORG, learning the truth." Squall's lips twitched, almost as if to smile. He wouldn't, of course. Smiles were...for the one he hadn't found yet. "I don't remember taking any orders since then...I guess your intelligence wasn't as good as they claimed to be."

None of this he would have revealed to Seifer before coming here...but here, what did the truth matter? He could do nothing with it.

"Oh, really?" Seifer shook his head a little, amused by Squall. "Your contract was to serve my ex till her precious Timber was free. That didn't happen, so you're still following orders. You're pretty poor at it anyway, what with your losing her and everything."

It was surprising what you could find out by keeping your ears open around a Sorceress. Here, Seifer didn't care. He knew Squall inside and out, knew that the other was a weakling through and through. Emotional little brat who tried to distance himself so he wouldn't be the resident crybaby anymore. Extreme in nearly everything he did, far too extreme. He carried an arrogance about him, even though he wasn't always fond of himself.

Squall was a little paradoxical kid. And Seifer found himself more and more amused by it.

"My service to her has nothing to do with a contract." At least, not anymore it didn't. Once, yes, he'd resented the cheerful young woman, and the contract that bound him to fight for her home. If he had truly wished to be free...he could have simply accepted the protests in the space pod, accepted that Rinoa was lost in space...that going to rescue her was insane. Even after that...he could have accepted her decision to be shut away in the Memorial.

But he hadn't.

So many 'what if's'...useless now, unless he found her.

And of course, he didn't answer the real question. That had always been a problem of Squall's-- he never saw anything but the first thing that came to his mind. Pity, really. He should've learned by now that there was a lot more to life than the first impression. Even Seifer grudgingly had to admit that much-- after all, Squall had managed to grow up beyond the stupid little crybaby he'd been, hadn't he? Ah well. That wasn't this time, that wasn't this place.

"I'm sure. But you won't find her. It won't matter," Seifer smirked slightly at the stallion. "She's not around here, and even if she is, she won't be coming to look for you. You don't have a 'place' here, do you?"

"Just as much as you do," Squall said in a curt tone, eyes and face carefully blank. That much at least wasn't too different in this four-legged form, even if his tail was damnably hard to keep from twitching.

"Last I knew, you didn't see the future either. Unless you include dreams of your imagined glory."

"I have a place here. You've never been able to adjust well, Squallie-boy," Seifer smiled. "And my dreams weren't of glory, kid. If you've deluded yourself that much, you really have no idea about me at all-- which insults me, mostly. You've known me so long, I thought you'd have a better grasp on me. You disappoint-- again.

"And this is why she'll choose me if she shows up again."

"After offering her to Adel? You've always underestimated the intelligence of others." Eyes were cool as he felt that he was finding firmer ground. He knew Seifer was wrong. ((We made a promise...that you wouldn't know about, Seifer.))

This time Squall allowed himself to smile, just a little. "She will remember who came for her...and who attempted to push her into oblivion." A flick of his tail and a soft snort followed that statement. "You never were very good at loyalty."
