Video games. They're a big part of every geek's life. Hell, they're a big part of many people's lives. Now, they're here in Nuts With Dice. Discuss current games, talk about upcoming games, and reminisce about past games. Whatever your thing is, do it here.

This thread has been a long time coming, and now with the 'discussion' in Any Talk, I figured it was high time to create it.

Well, having played through most of the original Halo, I can finally give my 'professional' opinion on the question that has been plaguing my mind ever since Halo came out. And my answer is this:

Perfect Dark is better than Halo.

Yup, the war is over (in my opinion, at least). Halo, being repetitive, difficult, annoying and quite frankly disappointing, does not stack up against the legend.

Let's compare, shall we?

Perfect Dark has a beautiful array of 33 weapons (41 if you count multi player weapons), ranging from several types of pistols ( heart the Phoenix), machine guns ( heart the Super Dragon), grenade launchers, rocket launchers ( heart the Shredder) and weapons that don't even fit into a category (the Reaper, anyone?).

Halo has two basic sets: normal weapons and plasma weapons. One pistol for each, one automatic for each, a rocket launcher, sniper rifle, shotgun, and some weird-a** needle-gun that is terrible to use, and a pain to be against.

Perfect Dark's levels are intricate, well-thought-out and interesting, using easy-to-recognize, yet challenging to fulfill objectives.

Halo's levels are simply a twisting, main-stream of room after room, with very little discernible difference between each. Long, annoying, and repetitive.

Perfect Dark has Elvis.

Halo has Monitor (granted, the Data-dyne(sp?) computer guy was just as annoying in Perfect Dark).

Perfect Dark's story is well thought-out, complete with a back history (and a comic, if I'm not utterly mistaken) and realistic. It takes you from a future Goldeneye-esque world into an alien world. It also has Co-op.

Halo's story is equally impressive (so far that I've seen) it has me interested and is very in-depth. The idea of Halo (not the game, the station thingie) is pretty neat, too. Halo might rival PD in this category, any may eventually beat it, but not by much.

Perfect Dark's alien race is the Skedder (sp?) who look like smaller, vomit-colored rip-offs of Starship Troopers' aliens. They can possess human beings and cloak. They also have little ankle-biting terrifying babies.

Halo's aliens consist of annoying little cartoon squirrel-voiced aliens, drone-like creatures with pain-in-the-a** shields, and big-assed enemies of many sorts that kill in one hit over, and over, and over again. Then, of course, you get the the OTHER aliens. The parasitic, 'I'm not dead yet, NYAH!' aliens that either to you in a single bound, or explode violently when shot. Oh, and did I mention that they send these enemies in hoards? It would be okay if they were a bit weaker, or if there were a few less, but combine strength, numbers, and powerful one-hit-kill weapons an vehicles, then you have yourself a major pain. (I can't tell you how many times I've had to repeat some of that repetitive crap). Besides being mostly annoying, all of the aliens are fairly cartoonish in appearance (and voice, as the smallest prove).

Perfect Dark's graphics were waaaay ahead of its time. Even WITH the expansion pack, the game was sloppy-looking (as were all 64 games) and sluggish.

Halo's graphics actually made a better impression on me than I would have thought. But, of course, comparing the two games in this category is like comparing Halo to Gears of War. Perfect Dark was doomed to fail this test.

Perfect Dark's multi player mode was the most impressive I've ever seen in a first-person shooter. All 41 weapons were available to choose from, and you could dual-wield any of them (unrealistic, but FUN). Four players and eight sims could go at it it in a wide variety of levels, including three classics from Goldeneye. And the computer players could be set to any of over a dozen fun settings. Can anybody say Meat-sim?

To be honestly fair, I haven't played Halo's multi player, but I seriously doubt that it comes close to Perfect Dark's. Sure, PD didn't have online play, and you couldn't link up the systems (as far as I know) but Halo just can't possible win.

Now, is you were strong enough to read through all that, then I applaud you. You can take quite the ranting, cant you?

Now, perhaps I was a tad hard on Halo. Despite it being a let-down, it is fun. I didn't think it wouldn't be. And perhaps I decided to type this because I got fed up with dying over and over at a single part and am fairly angry at the game, but I still think my analysis is fairly accurate.

So, my final word is this: don't claim that Halo is better than Perfect Dark unless you've actually played Perfect Dark. It was a classic, and a legend. I simply can't wait until it is released for the virtual console on the Wii, if it ever is.

Either way I still like Halo, and maybe thats because I've played it first and haven't played Perfect Dark, but whatever. As for their being a comic for Perfect Dark, they have up to (I believe) three fiction stories out now for Halo. I know the first one starts with before the rest of the Master Chief's died. It seems pretty good, but seeing that I haven't played, or read anything about Perfect Drak I guess that means (according to Matt's Rant) that I can't saying anything about that.

I really liked Halo's CoOp. mode, it was really fun. Multiplayer I THOUGHT was pretty cool and fun, because on certain levels once you kill everything you can mess around with the Banshee's. The fun part is when you are messing around, you can teleport someone to the side of a cliff and watch them helplessly plummet to their detah again. My brother used to do that crap to me all the time...I thought it was funny. One time I got reloaded on top of a tree, twas interesting trying to get down without killing myself. BUt I guess none of this matters seeing that I haven't played Perfect Drak so I guess I should have an oppinion.

I liked Halo, the beginning can be slow and boring when the guy is preping you when you wake up, especially if you have played before. That I have a problem with, because you should be able to skip most of that, but it doens't allow you too. That can be annoying.

Sure it doesn't have a butt load of weapons, you crash landed on a giant ring, I wouldn't expect to find a whole lot of anything either.

No offence, because I mean none, but When I saw you guys playing Perfect Dark, some of the levels were from 007, I guess it was too hard to make up new levels to make Perfect Dark it's own.

But I guess I can't be a judge of that because I haven't played the game.

Now, now, don't get me wrong. I'm liking Halo, too. Ignoring the fact that more often than not, it's infuriating me to the point of seeing red. I like it, and after starting the second (which I think the enemy design is MUCH better. Also, the weapon selection has improved GREATLY) the story is very good. I mostly posted that in a fit of rage over dying for the twentieth time on one spot (over and over and over). I needed a break and to let off some steam. And it did the trick. I didn't mean for that to be an attack on Halo (as you have apparently taken it as), in fact, I probably should have posted it in the rant thread... whoops.

And the only reason I compared it so heavily to Perfect Dark was because of frequent arguments I've had about which game is better *cough* James and Josh *cough*.

I still haven't got the chance to play Halo's multi player, and I hope to soon. My point now is that I simply don't see why it has the following that it has. WAAAAY overrated.

I like Halo (and I do agree with you on this point.), but I wouldn't sacrifice my first born to the Xbox gods, mainly the Halo god (ironic?). The first one is by far my favorite, because I like how the guns don't have the stupid kick like they do in the second game. It doesn't make sense that Master cheif suddenly became weak with random cyborg fatigue. That I don't like, but the graphics are better, the covenant is better, and the story prgresses, which is always a plus.

I can understand why you were huffy at the first game, it can do that, but no reason to anger the Halo fans (the ones who don't sacrifice their first born, or even sacrifice, or even those who do sacrifice...granted they are a little "special".) we are people too, and we like our Halo games. What I don't understand is why a nintendo game and a xbox game are even being compared. They are for different systems, their story (as far as I know) are different, they were made in different years, and there are plenty other games I could compare them to, which would seem stupid, because it would be no differnt than comparing Halo and Perfect Dark.

What makes sense is to compare a xbox game against an xbox game, and a nintendo game against a nintendo game. Even then it would be kind of rediculous, because they were made before or after eachother.

So basically it would be like comparing 'Duck Hunt' and 'Metoid Prime" for the DS. Now if I'm not mistaken, that would be silly. I can keep going.

Plus from what I read (and I could be wrong as a Halo fan.) the makers of Halo, didn't expect for it to sell as well as it did. Granted I doubt they could tell the future. I htink the only reason it did as well as it did, is because of the mass amount of advertising, and the word of mouth. Plus having friends play with you, and you can do all sorts of crazy stuff, would definantly make it a funb game. PLus it didn't take itself too seriously, the people who raved about it took Halo seriously, therefore xbox took advantage of that.

That is all...for now.

Okay, Halo 2 is seriously redeeming the first. As far as I'm concerned, they improved it in almost every way (except the kick on the machine gun. I hate that).

The enemies have more detail (and a larger variety) and are a lot less cartoonish. The story is very in-depth and interesting (the alternate story is bad-a**, too). The graphics are better (of course). the weapon selection is MUCH better and more fun. Also, weapons that sucked in the last game suck less now! And best of all; the levels don't repeat themselves over and over! I feel like I'm actually going somewhere when I move about! Each place is NEW! Makes me very happy.

Ok, I dont know why you brought up the PD over Halo arguement...how long ago was that last said ^ ^?

Anywhoo, God of War 2 comes out Tuesday. I have beaten God of War again to prep myself to beat the second, and the movie 300 could not have had a better time to release ^ ^. Woo!

Hey Matt, One of these Thrusdays or Fridays we should Co-Op Halo 2 so you get that part of it as well.

Yeah, but it's too bad that they're going to be loosing the PS2 emulator and being a lot less backwards compatible than they already are. So you go ahead and buy your $600 paperweight.

Bullet Witch is neat, but I'm glad I didn't buy it. Too many glitches and graphical errors, as well as the tendancy to piss me off easily. Either I'm starting to suck, or video games are getting harder. The game is pretty neat in some of the spells you get, such as lightning, but that's about all that impressed me. The controls are awkward (left trigger is dodge/jump?) and there is very little variation of enemies. Some of them are pretty Silent Hill-esque, but beyond that, unimpressive. For example, I'm about halfway through the game and I've encountered the following enemies: The main grunts, which are like intelligent zombies (with guns and sometimes grenade launchers) that wear human skin as scarves. They sound pretty cool, but that's ALL they are. Each one is identical. Then we have the "Walnut Heads" which are guys floating in the air with MASSIVE BRAINS that produce shields and throw crap at you. Kind of neat, even though the shields are a tad cheesey. Then we have the human monster thingies. They're humans with some kind of weird, swollen head. They walk about as if on strings and their chests open up into a rib-cage mouth (neat WOD idea, actually). Oh, and they spit fire. Other than the bosses (kinda cool) there si no other variation.

I did. I just can't wait to sink my teeth into that GoW II. Hearing DJ talk about it is almost enough to make me buy it. Of course, the lack of money is enough to keep me from buying it.
