Nick wasn’t in the best of moods, well, that was quite a understatement. He was feeling terrible, why shouldn’t he? He thought he was getting a great job for once, only to find out barely a day later he was tricked, and going to be turned into god knows what.
He sat between the roots of a tree in the shade, just by the lake. Normally he wouldn’t want to leave his room, save only for getting food and toiletries. His room was hot and stuffy after all, he couldn’t spent all his time in there. He had his headphones one, loud enough to block the sound from pretty much everything round him. He just sat there for a while, lost in though, until the MP3 died and the song cut off, and just before the best part too.
“Urgh…crap”

Ryan walked through the woods, heading towards the lake. Going for a swim sounded really nice right about then. He fidgeted with one of his elongated ears, a habit he had picked up. It was just so...weird. A litle cool as well, since he could move them a bit, but still weird. It was like when you lost a tooth, and you couldn't help probing the empty spot with your tounge.
Getting to the lake, he stripped off his shirt, exposing the long grey hairs that had started to grow on his now discolored back. He was already wearing his bathing suit, his nub of a tail just sticking over the top. Taking off his boots and socks, he started to wade into the water. It never occured to him that someone mihgt be there already.

He sighed, he guessed that meant it was time to head back to his room, maybe he’d feel like doing something when he got there. But for now, since his thoughts had focused on his situation, he just continued to stare at the ground between his feet, feeling the weight in the pit of his stomach grow steadily heavier.
Though he was soon brought out of his depressed stupor by the splash Ryan made as he entered the lake.
“Hmm?, oh one of them”
Thus far, Nick had avoided anyone who’d changed at all costs. They just creepied him out, but not more so than the thought that he’d be one of them eventually. That, and the stories he’d been told from some other informed unchanged islanders about Annie really didn’t help matters.
Best to make himself scarce, and tried to hurry off as quietly as he could, but the the ground covered in leaves, that was quiet impossible.

The water was nice and warm. For some reason, Ryan had felt colder lately. What he didn't know was that his average body termperature was lower now than a human's.
He'd made it up to his knees when he heard the sound of leaves crunching behind him, and his ears swiveled around to catch the sound. "Hello?" He said as he turned around, worry evident in his voice. It might be one of the feral islanders. "Is someone there?"
What should he do? Go further into the water? Or would he just be trapping himself?

Crap, he’d been heard. He thought and ran through his options quickly, he could just run, but Ryan had seen him when he turned around, hadn’t he? Well, he’d have to talk to some of them eventually, maybe now would be a good time ask about the changes that he was worrying about every other day.
“Oh…er..h-hello” He faked a smile as he waved politely with one hand and stuffed his headphones into his pocket with the other.

He hadn't seen him, but now that he spoke, Ryan could see where the guy was. Thank God he wasn't some feral islander that was going to rip his face off.
Once he took a good look at the guy though, he didn't feel much better. The guy was unchanged. Did he know about the island?e needed to find out if the guy knew, without actually saying it right out, in case he didn't know.
"Umm, hi. How's the, uh, island treating you so far?"

How the island was treating him? Oh lord how he could have ranted out a answer to that question. How the universe had managed to find a way to make his pathetic sucky life had just even worse. At least he got free food and a room, but that was hardly a fair trade for losing his humanity.
But Nick’s usual habit of trying to make sure people never worried about him shone through, even now.
“I-‘m fine…I-I guess” He carried one putting on the most placid face he could manage, as he tried to hold in some of the tears that had accumulated in his eyes over his sit down.

Well, that wasn't as definitive an answer as he was hoping for. He walked out of the lake, slowly, so as not to freak the guy out if he hadn't seen his changes yet. Once he got closer though, he could see the guy was on the verge of crying. That meant that most likely the guy knew something at least.
He stood at the edge of the water, where it was only about an inch or so deep. Just great, another guy on the verge of a breakdown. "I know how you're feeling right now. Don't feel you need to hold it in; it'll just be worse if you do."

Crap, he could tell Nick was lying, not that Nick was ever really good at hiding his feelings. Still, his need to hide them continued.
“I’m fine” he said that last part quiet forcefully, making it also quiet obvious he wasn’t “Fine”. He quickly wiped his eyes with the tissue that was his sleeve, and tried to make it looks like he was cleaning his glasses instead.

"Okay, okay." If the guy was having some big issues, not that Ryan could blame him. He wasn't going to press the issue though. He walked up to the guy, extending his slightly clawed hand.
"I'm Ryan, nice to meet you."

“Erm, H-hi, It’s N-Nick” He muttered, Nicks former placid appearance was fading rapidly now, as he clear choked up on barely stating his own name. And very reluctantly reached his hand over and shake Ryans. He mentally filched and the touch, or rather the though of his claws against his skin.
“Try to be nice, just for once”

"A pleasure, Nick." he couldn't help but notice the stutter, and the reluctance to shake his hand.
"Look, I'm not going to hurt you or anything. Hell, I've barely changed at all." He was slightly annoyed. He wasn't that scary, was he?

Nick couldn’t stop himself whimpering slightly, not he was scared. He was just trying to hold back his enviable burst into tears. He put his forearm to his face and carried on his pathetic attempt at hiding it while under the guise of cleaning his glasses.
“I-I know you won’t…your probably not l-like…” He choked up again before he could say “Annie “I-I’m j-just…” He trailed off, unable to continue his statement, Nick was always like this when he was emotional, completely unable to express or explain his feelings.

"Just upset about the whole thing?" He guessed. "I know what you mean, I was like that for a while." He sighed and sat down, leaning his back against a tree.
"I know this might not make sense, but you'll feel a lot better if you stop caring. That's what I did. I try not to think beyond what I'm going to do for the day. I'm not saying that's for you, but you might give it a try."

He wanted to just yell at Ryan now, he didn’t know how he felt, it wasn’t just the “Being turned into a animal” thing, this was something he’d pent up most of the past two years.
But then again, he wasn’t anyone special, not was really different in his case, the same applied to everyone on this island. Not that you convince Nick that.
Try that? It wasn’t like he wasn’t trying everything he could to feel that little bit better, though most of his attempts where pure escapism. That was his way of feeling better.
He turned away from Ryan, and carried on his increasingly useless charade.
