Talner

Talner was happy to note that the floor changed from wood to marble. He wouldn't want to tick off Nara by telling her that her floor was burnt. The librarian was already mad about that. His hand, though shoved into at least five oven mitts, was feeling the heat from Nate's hand rather intensly. He just hoped that that crazy girl would know what was wrong with the boy and could fix it.

Nathaniel was trying to keep up with Talner's quick pace, but was starting to wear out. Luckily, he remembered that this was close to where Nara had made him stop hurting. He was panting when the pair stopped at Nara's door and Talner knocked, hoping that the relic was in today. It hadn't crossed his mind until now that she might not be...

With a heavy thud, Nara snapped the book she was studying shut. With a groan the woman slid her chair back and headed to the door. Unlocking it the woman opened it. "Hel-..Oh." The woman stared at Talner, ice dripping from her voice. "May I help you?"

Talner's forced smile faded as Nara's tone changed upon seeing him. "Uh... yeah... You see... He burns things..." The man gestured to Nate, who peered up at Nara, rather worn out.

"I feel hot..." The boy quietly stated.

"And he's not kidding..." Talner added, pointing to the charred marks on his clothing.

Nara gestured for Nate to come in, shooting Talner a dirty look. "Come in Nate. Do you remember what your scroll is?" The woman asked kindly, her demeanor a stark contrast compared to how she treated the boy's 'guardian'. She may not like kids but hey. If being sweet to Nate emphasised her distaste of the man who left her unconsious on the cold stone floor for two hours.. Well, she'd turn into a fairy godmother.

The boy cheered up some and walked in, careful not to touch anything. "Uh... I think mommy said it was a... kamet?" He thought that was what she'd said, though it'd been a while ago.

Talner definately felt uncomfortable. It seemed that Nara didn't like him now for some reason. Well, okay, so she'd never really liked him to begin with, but... surely she could at least pretend to tolerate him.

"A comet, huh," Nara said smiling. Heading to her desk she reached for a book and flipped through it. Nodding to herself she turned back to Nate and kneeled down.

"Did your mommy explain to you about the scrolls?" she asked, trying to figure out how much Nate knew already.

Now the boy shook his head. "Mommy said I came from a piece of paper... but nottin' about any scrolls..." Nathaniel was a bit confused now. What was Nara talking about. "What's a scroll...?"

Talner decided to take a seat on his own, considering that Nara was ignoring him. He was sure that she would've offered if it weren't for the fact that Nate's condition was something of a concern...

Talner would have been sorely mistaken if he had visited Nara at any other time. She probably would have made him sit on the cold stone floor, without any rug under him.

Nodding at the boy, she sat down a little more comfortably. "A scroll is a piece of paper. But in our case, it's a little more special. See, something went different from how we were supposed to come out. Somehow it's tyed into what kind of writing was on the paper we came out of. You came out of a comet scroll and it seems like you got some of their properties. What makes comet's so pretty to look at in the sky is that the radiate off a lot of heat. You're doing the same thing."

Nara paused looking at the boy. "Do you understand so far?" she asked.

Nate's brows furrowed as he took in what Nara was saying. "So I'm... ray-dee-ate-ing," the boy slowly worked out the word, "heat." He paused to think for a moment. "That means that I'm really hot...?" Did that also make him pretty? Well, if it worked for comets...

Talner listened in as well, wondering just how all of this affected the boy. So he had some properties of a comet. What next? Would he start dissolving into gas that would float along in a trail behind him?? And just how would this help the fact that he made anything he touched burst into flame?

"Exactly," Nara said with a smile. "But, unlike a comet, you can learn to control it so you won't be so hot all the time. Unfortunately you won't be able to today. We don't have the teacher here right now." She straightened up. "But we might have a few..heat resistant clothing in one of our storerooms. Do you want to come take a look?" Nara almost offered the boy her hand, but quickly thought better of it. From the looks of the boy's new 'father', it would be quite painful.

Control it? That sounded hard. "Okay..." He peered sadly at his own scorched clothing. And he liked these... With a sigh, Nathaniel shuffled forward to follow after Nara.

"Uh, so... when will the teacher be here?" Talner could only hope that it was very, very soon. As in, tomorrow.

Drat, that stupid man was still following them. "I don't know," Nara replied sweetly, "We're still interviewing candidates and then who knows how long it'll take for them to start." Ah, sweet sweet revenge. The woman almost broke her ploy by chuckling evilly.

Finally they reached a storeroom after much twisting and turning. Unlocking the door, Nara gestured the two in, following right behind. The room was an ecclectric collection of hodgepodge, though mosting from Earth circa the 20th century.

Nara moved directly to one of the boxes and began rummaging around. Finally she found an old fireman's outfit and dumped it on the ground. "We have that..." she pointed out.

Talner's face fell. That wasn't a good thing. Hopefully they'd get moving faster on that. Especially since there was now a walking fire hazard around.

Nate's face, on the other hand, lit up as he spotted the outfit. "I can bes a fire figh'er?!" The boy almost danced with joy. This was better than just getting to put on a helmet and pretend. This was an actual uniform!

"Sure thing!" Nara said, pitching her voice to some semblance of fake enthusiasm. Turning to Talner she smiled sweetly again. "I'm sure your dad won't mind shortening it a little to fit you better."

Talner would've given Nara a glare if it hadn't been for the fact that Nathaniel's little face beamed up at his new father. He forced himself to nod and not grimace. Great, now he had to learn how to sew... Oh how he hated this woman.
