I know I've been a loud advocate for 'No, Zuko really is that stupid,' but I can't help but think, is it possible he could have been brainwashed by the Dai Li when Azula captured him in 'Crossroads of Destiny?'
We don't really know how much time passed between the time he was captured and when he was thrown in the cave with Katara, though I know it wasn't horribly long. Maybe it was just long enough to get a really stupid fire nation prince brainwashed.

Or Zuko is still stupidly selfish. :[
The Dai Li didn't seem to have brainwashed Zuko though. If they didn't, why did Zuko look like he was all stressed out thinking of what will he do when Azula and Iroh were "fighting over him"? Wouldn't he have just got to fighting along side Azula right after he got brainwashed and not get thrown into the pit with Katara?
If there was any brainwashing at all, I believe it was Azula simply tricking Zuko into helping her using those speeches she said.

*shrugs* It was just a thought, an option I hadn't seen before. Brainwashing is supposed to be discreet at its best, though I suppose if it was that discreet it would be almost pointless.

If Zuko was brainwashed (assuming the Dai Li did it like they have done), someone would have said a phrase like "The king has invited you to Lake Laogai..." to "activate" him. No one did.

...Wow. I didn't think of them brainwashing him. It's possible. I don't hate him for doing what he did. He was always one of my favorite characters and still is. He did tell Katara that he changed so maybe he did. For better or worse, we will find out soon...

hoshinoame I don't hate him for doing what he did. I do! He's a loser. I was just reviewing alternate options. 'Oh, I've chanced! Oh, it's the avatar! Die avatar!' That kind of thing needs to stop.

Mysterious_Eyes If Zuko was brainwashed (assuming the Dai Li did it like they have done), someone would have said a phrase like "The king has invited you to Lake Laogai..." to "activate" him. No one did. That would be entertaining . . . the reaction, I mean. Suddenly his eyes go all black and half the fangirls in the world scream : XOMG IT IS SASUKE, I TOLD YOU!

Ithink that Zuko still really truly believes that he can go home and be reinstated as prince. So no he was not brainwashed, as you said earlier he would have gone straight to fighting alongside Azula. But Jet was brainwashed and he didn't turn against the gang as soon as he saw them. Hmmmmmmm, very complicated all this. I still think it is just a little plan that Zuko and Iroh have! I know he is good! I just know it! eek 4laugh

I just think that Zuko is a sadly lost soul (for anyone who watches Teen Titans, he's like Terra).

~TokyoRider~ AirGirl Phantom I just think that Zuko is a sadly lost soul (for anyone who watches Teen Titans, he's like Terra). i tottaly agree! Haha, you make a good point there. So far, with the brainwashing thing, I don't think it could ever happen to Zuko, since he was willing to join Azula, there was no need to. For others, yes I agree to how Zuko became a jerk, still wants the avatar, his throne, joins Azula etc. I really didn't like the way he turned his back to ever becoming good. But I still believe that he still has that good side to him, but just not mature enough to turn away on his pride and desire for power.

Hmm... if someone brainwashed him, wouldn't it be more likely Uncle Iroh? Or, something similar? Because he's NOT acting like himself, until he starts fighting at least.

I think that was just because of prolonged exposure to the hypnosis that caused that. Because when Jet was brainwashed, he didn't get creepy. He wasn't quite himself, but he didn't get creepy like Ju-Dee.
And, as far as him feeling a little guilty, of course he felt a little guilty. He acted on an impulse that if he could have thought about he probably wouldn't have followed through. He went through a "metamorphosis," remember? The Zuko from that episode and the one Azula is used to bullying around with her mind tricks are two different people. I think she'll see that next season. Or at least I hope so. Because I really like Zuko, and I don't want him to be a villain.
