The situation was something like this: The convenience store at the corner had candy bars. Todd wanted a candy bar. Unfortunately, Todd was broke.
So naturally, he decided to steal one.
If he had his way, he would have walked in, slit the cashier's throat, and made off with everything in the store, but at home, House Rule No. 2 was No Slitting Throats (Rule No. 1 was No Eating Kittens, for reason Todd didn't feel like finding out). So that was out of the question. He could have just snuck one into his pocket, but there was no way he could do that without the cashier noticing. So he needed an accomplice.
Unfortunately, he didn't have one of those either.
So Todd wound up pacing the street outside the store, flipping one of his knives into the air and catching it by the handle, as he waited for a likely future partner-in-crime to walk past.

And who would walk down the street but our loveable japanese fable, Bijin! His hair was starting to get longer, but what made him really look like a girl.........was the fact he was wearing a girl's school uniform. He had started a loud and long fight with his mother about wearing it, since it was more girly than anything he had ever worn before. But in the end, his mother gave him to let him be who he was. So now he merrily skipped down the street to the local store for some candy wearing his white shirt, blue jacket, and pleated blue skirt. He also had thigh high tights on and mary jane shoes!
He stopped when he noticed a young boy near his own age tossing a knife in the air. He thought it was was rather strange and approached him with a large smile.
"Ohayo! What are you doing here?"

What. The. Bloody hell?
Todd's eyebrows wrinkled as he looked the newcomer up and down. Boy? Girl? It was very, very hard to tell. Finally he settled on girl, if only because he couldn't imagine any self-respecting boy wearing a skirt. Or tights.
What a wierdo. Still, the kid could be useful. He did need a distraction, and this schoolgirl could be just what he needed.
"Nothin' much," he drawled, flicking the knife into the air again. "Trying to steal some candy. You wanna help?"
"You can have a piece if you do it right," he added as an afterthought, to give her some incentive.

Bijin looked at him with a confused look.
"Why do you need to steal candy? Why don't you buy it?"
He reached into the pocket of his skirt and pulled out what was left of his allowance after buying his new outfit. He smiled brightly at the other boy, not really noticing that he thought Bijin was a girl.
"I have some money, maybe we can both get a candy bar."

"Buying stuff's boooring," Todd drawled, continuing his knife-twirling, only half paying attention to the "girl." "Besides, I'm flat broke, 'an stupid parent won't give me any money, and- what?"
Money! Todd's second-favorite thing in the world. He flicked his knife shut and shoved it into his pocket as he leaned over to inspect Bijin's riches.
"Well.... okay, sure," he said, feeling a bit deflated. He'd been hoping to pull off a good heist, but he wasn't about to turn down free candy either.

Bijin smiled happily and walked into the store with Todd. Bijin knew stealing was wrong so he didn't want to get into trouble. After all, his mother might take away his new clothes. But thats not to say the idea of tricking people to get what he wanted didn't appeal to him. He just wanted to do it for something more interesting. He bought both him and Todd some candy and some pocky for his mother. The clerk smiled down at Bijin, having seen the boy buy pocky before.
"Ah, see your mother got you a new outfit eh Bijin? You best be careful though. The other boys might make fun of you."
"Thats ok, Mr. Gibbs. I don't care what they say, I like it! Its pretty!"
With that, little bunny chipper offered said candy to Todd. He really didn't care what the other boys said. The skirt was breezy and nonrestrictive like pants. The only restrictive thing he would ever wear was his kimonos.
"Guess I didn't introduce myself. I'm Bijin. What's your name?"

Wait. "Other boys?" What the bloody hell?-
"Your'e not a girl?" Todd said. Or tried to say. Since he currently had three-quarters of a Milky Way bar in his mouth, it came out more like "Mrr-ort a rrl?" He scowled, swallowed his candy and tried again. "Not a girl? Then why do you have a skirt?"
Not that he was prejudiced- he liked, or perhapse disliked everyone equally, no matter what they wore. But he didn't get the reason. Skirts were too... girly. Frilly. Whatever.
"Errr.... I'm Todd," he said, taking another bite of his candy bar. Then, pointing to the box of Pocky, "what's that stuff? Looks like sticks." He didn't know very much about Japanese culture- he was European, through and through.

"Hai, I am a boy. I like wearing skirts. They are pretty and not as tight as pants are. Pants just seem so......confining. Like they'd squeeze the life out of you. I normally wear kimonos, which while tight in the top are rather comfortable around the legs. But I saw this and demanded to have it."
He smiled brightly, Todd didn't seem to upset that he was a boy in a skirt. He seemed more confused than anything, and that was better than being picked on. Bijin nibbled on his 3 Musketeers before looking at his Pocky.
"Then it is nice to meet you Todd-san. This is Pocky, a chocolate coated bread stick. It is a japanese treat, I get them for my okaa-san. My mother. We are both from Japan so it is nice to have a little bit of home here in this town."

"Uh.... okay, then." Todd looked Bijin up and down again. He still looked girly. "I guess that makes sense." He gave his own baggy jeans a quick glance, but they didn't seem too "confining."
Whatever. Each to his own. Todd lived with an owl-winged ninja wannabee and a mysterious alien baby, so this was pretty low on his wierd-s**t-o-meter.
Pocky, on the other hand, was currently ranking very high on his yummy-treat-o-meter. "That looks good," he said, swiping one out of Bijin's hand before the other boy could do anything about it. "Where's Japan? I think I'm from England, but I don't really know. It's sort of fuzzy." He couldn't remember much of anything about the story he'd come from, except a vague suggestion of sharp pointy things and blood.

"Anou!! Those are for my mother!"
Bijin pouted as Todd took one of his boxes of Pocky. But maybe the other boy just liked sweets. He'd figure out a way to make him pay for the pocky later.
"Japan is very far away. It is a large island with a few smaller islands. But Pocky is one of the more well known desserts in my country. We are also known for sushi, which is fish wrapped in rice and seaweed, and kimonos which are silk clothing that is very fashionable."
The young fable tilted his head with a cute ? look on his face.
"You do not know where you are from? Do you know your fable? I don't know mine, okaasan said she'd take me to Japan soon so we could do some reasearch to find my fable."

"Well, it's mine now," Todd said, biting into the pocky. It was good, sweet but crunchy. Not as good as candy bars, but not bad either. He resisted the temptation to snag another. No point in getting the other boy mad at him.
"Japan sounds pretty cool. But how do you wrap fish in seaweed? Wouldn't it get all slimy?" He wrinkled his nose at the idea.
"And nooo... I dunno where I'm from." Todd shifted his feet, feeling a little awkward at having his ignorance caught. "Taylor- I think she's my oka-whatever-you said- doesn't know much about stories so she can't help me. Neither do my brothers."
"So... uh... maybe I need to go to wherever I'm from?"

"It might bring back memories. Lately I've been having some strange dreams. Okaasan says its from my fable life. So she has been researching my dreams, trying to figre out where in Japan it is located. Then maybe we can find my fable. Maybe you can look at your dreams to figure out your fable."
Bijin promptly hid the rest of the pocky but smiled as he tried to help the other fable find himself.

Todd frowned at the loss of the pocky. He'd been begining to think about stealing another piece, but now he'd lost the chance. Drat. This boy was a sneaky one, suking around in girl's clothes and taunting him with Japanese foodstuff.
"Dreams?" He fidgeted nervously, sticking one hand into a pocket to feel the handle of his knife. He didn't like sharing things with other people. Especially not dreams. He hadn't had many, but there had been a few. He'd never met another Fable before, so he didn't know this was normal.
"Just... stuff," he said finally. "Stuff. Blood. Hair. Sharp things. I'll tell you more if you tell me your dreams." No way was this going to be a one-sided deal.

"hmm, well, in my dreams I'm usually running through a forest of some kind. But I'm real down low, like I'm an animal. Then something stops me, like I'm trapped and can't move. I'm very scared. Then something releases me, its very kind but I can't make out what it is yet. So I tell the thing that I will help him. It thanks me and...well thats when I wake up. It gets a little longer every night though, so soon I will see the whole thing. If I can only figure out what traps me and who the thing is that helps me. And how I help them. Now its your turn!"
He had started walking since Todd seemed to be figitty. That way he had something to concentrate on. He smiled brightly at his new friend, not really caring that he had a knife. Knifes made food.

Todd listened quietly to the dream story, interested in spite of himself. "Any idea what kinda animal you are? Like, how tall? Maybe that'll be a clue..." He thought for a minute, following Bijin with short, hurried steps. He had no idea the boy was trying to help him, but walking did make him feel a little better.
"I guess when you see the whole thing, it'll make sense. Right now it doesn't so much... what could an animal do for a person? If it is a person?"
Oh. Right. He had to do his dream now. He missed a step and stumbled a little. Sniffing, he straightened, walking calmly as though there hadn't been any mistake.
"Right. It's like, I'm a lot older, and I'm running a store or something. And this guy comes in and for some reason I'm really, really mad at him- I can't tell why- and he sits down in this chair or something." He was looking up at the sky, trying to hide the fact that his cheeks were getting red. He wasn't entirely comfortable with this part of the dream. "Okay, and I've got something sharp, not one of my knives, it's sharper then that- and I walk up to this guy and WHAM." He made a jerking motion with one hand, sliding an invisible knife across an invisible throat. "Blood everywhere. And that's when I wake up."
He kept looking up, not wanting to meet Bjin's gaze. At this point, the boy was the closest thing Todd had to a friend, and he didn't want to scare him off. How was he going to react to THIS?
