from the news : Quote: New Line Cinema recently asked us to promote their new movie “The Last Mimzy” on Gaia. We checked out the trailer and thought it looked pretty cool, so starting next week we will be putting some info around the site to help spread the word about the movie. There will be a special Last Mimzy Quest available (and a free exclusive item!) for those who are interested what do you think of that? i like the idea... BUT gaia claims to be a non-profit site , right? i just CAN'T see the guys from such a big company like NLC coming to lanzer and saying: Lanzer my man ! promote our new big hit ! and he replies "yea sure dude ! we'll do it for free" ... something fishy in that.. ninja

Oh no - this is *definitely* an opportunity for profit for Gaia.... *biiiiiiig* bucks, as a matter of fact.
Personally, I find this move discouraging and disappointing, but inevitable. I just hope it doesn't get out of hand. One of the things I liked about this site was the very limited advertising....
ps: I seem to recall when they switched from "donation" letters to "collection" letters, a note from Gaia Admin clarifying that they are a for-profit company, prompting the switch in naming the things...

I'd say this is a sign they're getting realistic. This site is getting much bigger & much more expensive to run. Last fall seems to have been a wake-up call to them that they can't rely on the income from the MCs to cover expenses any more. I'd rather see movie ads here than some of the stuff that gets advertised, & well-chosen movie items could be fun! I think this also shows how big Gaia has become--it is recognised that having movie items here would be advertising in itself. Gaia would be doing THEM a favor, not the other way around now. If only we'd been to this point say, when the LoTR trilogy was being made...imagine having Hobbit Feet, or real Elven Cloaks, or Gondorian helmets... gonk

i chose good idea, but i too have reservations..
i fully understand the need for more revenue, i just hope they manage to do it in a way that wont overload the site with banner ads like Neopets talk2hand
quests seems a pretty clever idea actually, as people who aren't interested can just not do them, but we shall just have to wait and see..of course there is the lure of new items, which could well be very cool though no doubt some will be extremely naff.
on the whole i'm cautiously optimistic about this..

I say its a good idea. Gaia claims to be a Manga and Anime forum website, yet theres very little proof of this. Its about time they went out and got some Anime things to put in. So what if they get money for it? Some of its bound to find its way onto the systems to increase its preformance.

I'm actually a bit curious about this movie they're starting out with, so if they do the quest in such a way that we can learn what the movie is about, I'll be happy to take it. And you know some of the items will be good & some not so good. It's the same even for plain old store items. They can't get it right all the time for everyone. I think it would be fine to just have some Home items out of it, even...a movie poster for your wall, a program book or a magazine to lay on a table....

Some of its bound to find its way onto the systems to increase its preformance. thing is , they claim on every step that they are a non-profit site and that money from 'collectibles' is only to maintain the servers and stuff ! dont tell me that the 50 or so ppl work for free ?? it'd be good if they'd get moneyz, to improve the site, but at least they could be honest about it ... xD

i take my hat off to them really, they've come one hell of a long way since Gaia was 2 guys with a couple of servers in their front room. must have been some learning curve for them. i found this old interview with Lanzer whilst wandering through Google.. http://www.big-boards.com/int.php?n=60b

They have come a very long way in a short time - only four years from the servers in the living room, to what Gaia is now. The movie/anime tie-in could be great for the site - we've been complaining for long enough that it doesn't live up to its image of being an anime-based site. 3nodding

I've not been on gaia to comment on the old days but I love the free plushie bunny heart and as long a the site doesn't become plastered with ad's I think a little sponsorship isn't bad.

I like the way they did this--a nice profile with a trailer, a quick quest that gets you to look at that trailer, and a guild to talk about it in, making it easy for New Line to find & view the feedback. It keeps it all in the exisiting Gaia structure, & if you don't want to participate, it isn't crammed down your throat. 3nodding Personally, I think the movie looks very interesting & these Mimzies are great! xd

i totally agree Eirwyn, the quest system keeps it all nice and neat.
i think the film looks pretty good, Whatsit didn't notice the 'chopped up cow' comment in the trailer did he? ninja
Mimsy is great though, lovely cute squishy thing, i wonder if it's NPC will ever be seen again once this promotion is over though? you never know, with Easter around the corner..
oh yeah! dumb Gaia, what's with the clover for St.Patrick's? they couldn't rhyme anything with shamrock so gone for the easy option?? rolleyes that does annoy me a little. a site like this has the opportunity to sneakily educate a large amount of ignorant kids, so they mis-inform them instead neutral

I like how they've done this, too, nothing pushy, just there to do if you want to - and I love Mimzy! biggrin
