what the hell genre are these guys? They are not emo. Emo is Fall Out Boy and all that...."music." They are not alternative. The Cure is alternative, as are The Dears, and that sort of stuff. They are not gothic.

My Chemical Romance is alternative rock. Aiden is emo/post-hardcore/horror punk. 30 Seconds To Mars is alternative rock/progressive rock. AFI is hardcore punk/alternative punk. Fall Out Boy is emo/pop punk. The Cure is alternative/new wave/post-punk/gothic rock. The Dears' music style varies far too much to be classified as simply alternative rock.

Electrash Fall Out Boy are not Emo. They are generally pop-punk, but they've been known to cross into emo a lot.
EDIT: Emo would be bands like Hawthorne Heights, I Hate Myself, Saves the Day, Thursday, Salem, etc.

My Chemical Romance - Pop-rock with some limited horror-punk influences Aiden - Post-hardcore (and crap, I should mention) 30 Seconds to Mars - Pop-rock AFI - At this current time, AFI is pop-rock. For large portions of their earlier career however, they were punk-revival, as well as hardcore.
Fall Out Boy - Pop-rock. Not emo at all. The Cure - They've varied quite a bit throughout their career: post-punk, goth-rock, new wave, pop, and pop-rock. The Dears - College-rock with pop influences

What are they? does it relly even matter what style they are? It makes conversation easier. Classification helps the flow of language, and leads to a greater understanding (in this case) of musical style and structure.

SarahArden GilAskan My Chemical Romance - Pop-rock with some limited horror-punk influences Pop-punk? Excuse me no, Green Day is poprock. They aren't pop-punk. Groups like Ramones, Buzzcocks, Rezillos, the Jam, or X-ray Spex are/were pop-punk. Pop-rock: A genre which blends traditional pop elements into a rock base. The genre is characterized by simple song structure (typically following the traditional "Opening -> First Verse -> Chorus -> Second Verse -> Chorus -> Bridge -> Chorus" pattern, usually), catchy melodies, basic guitar and drum arrangements, and fast (sometimes aggressive) tempo. The genre is broad, encompassing thousands of bands. The Beatles, Green Day, OK Go, The Aquabats, My Chemical Romance, Queen... just a few. My Chemical Romance is a pop-rock band because their music encompasses virtually all of the genre's conventions, though, as a whole, they're less repetitious than most pop-rock groups (save for a few songs, of course). They also, as I mentioned, take influence from horror-punk thematically, theatrically, and (occassionally) in the intensity of vocals.

All others seem to instantly stamp emo on them because of there new music. They changed so oddly through the past 10-15 years. first was punk revival then alternative, gothic, now this....blast!

While their old stuff did "encompass virtually all of the genre's conventions", they're actually losing a lot of fans for breaking out of that with their new CD. They don't cover themselves in blood, wear black nailpolish, (Gerard even had BLONDE hair for a while) or wear dramatic makeup anymore. Poprock. Ew. No.

No.They're still pop-rock, even with their new album. While they are drawing more dramatic and large-scale elements, many of these influences still seem to come from other pop-rock groups, particularly Queen. Now, their music is growing and changing. The new album, as you've said, is different than their previous work. But that doesn't change the fact that it has anthemic choruses, melodic guitars, and an upbeat tempo.
