Soft chirpping from birds met the ears of a small female wind soquili that was standing against the sun with a deep frown on her once peaceful face. It was etched so deeply into her expression that it was almost frightening how she was able to even pull it off. Death's gentle gray eyes were filled with morbid anger, most of it at herself but some of it directed at the situation in general.

Here she was, stomach bulged out on both sides wider than any mare she'd met that had been pregnant, even her wings could barely hide it anymore. But when she should have been feeling happiness... instead Death felt like she had betrayed her love. Khairi didn't even KNOW about the foal or foals they were about to have, mostly because she'd been to afraid to tell him.

Did he want them? They had come too fast.

What if he wasn't happy about it, what if he told her to leave?

Of course she didn't believe deep down in her heart that Khairi was really like that, but the shyness that came wih the pregnancy was making her think thiings that weren't really true, to see things that hadn't been there before or warping them if they had.

In her mind Death didn't quite know what to do. Should she go and find him to tell him? Should she run(Not that she even COULD, she loved him too much to do that to him)? Should she stay where she was and see if he found her?

It was all a blur, Death didn't even KNOW what she should do any longer, she could only wrap her wings around her belly and drop her head forlornly as she thought of how much torment he must be in now that she had been gone for so many days straight. He had to be worried, odds were good he might even snap at her for dissapearing on him... but she didn't know what else to do. She couldn't let him see her with this pudgy belly, or could she?

Khairi snorted and threw his head. The brisk morning air was chilly, but the sun was a reminder that winter was drawing back again. Grass poked through in green patches - from a distance it was almost like emeralds scattered across a pearly surface. Sunlight gleamed on the wet grass and glittered on the snow.

Or maybe that was just the poet in him coming out. He grinned and picked up the pace to a trot. There was something... magical about this morning.

His breath steamed and was left curling in the sun behind him as he sped forwards. His muscles bunched - he could almost feel the energy coursing through him, tracing it's way down his legs and compelling him forwards. His hooves pounded on the forest loam and crunched through frozen puddles that dotted the path. The blue stallion broke into a canter and rounded a blind corner -

And skidded to a halt.

"Little ghost?"

She looked so unhappy! It pulled at his heart to see her frown like that. Her's was certainly a face more ment for smiling. But she was more lovely than anything! She was whiter than the snow, and brighter than the patches of wet emerald grass!

... and rounder than a ripe berry.

"... are you?" Eyes wide, he trotted forwards. A smile grew on his muzzle, replacing the shocked expression. It grew until it was nearly splitting his face - love bubbled up until he thought he must burst from it!

Wings snapping to her belly and eyes widening from instantanious fluster, Death backed up a bit when Khairi cantered around the corner as if nothing had ever happened. It took everything she had not to take to the sky, the only thing keeping her from it being her deep love for Khairi and her knowledge that if she took off her babies might be hurt. The strain of flying might even kill them and that would break her heart.

"K-K-Khai...ri." She blushed heavily and fluttered her wings a little at her sides as she swallowed and tried to force herself to not sidle away.

The love in her chest made her heart flutter like her wings and the tiny wind mare gazed up at Khairi despite the differance in their sizes. Another blush spread over her snow white cheeks and she ducked her head, it seemed the more she thought of how she loved him the more embarassed she got and that wasn't doing her ANY good right now.

"Y-yes... I am..." Death cleared her throat cautiously and looked straight down at her hooves, "... pregnant..."

There it was, all out there for him, now what was he going to do? The mare closed her eyes tight and grimaced as she waited to see what he would do. If he would run, if he would yell, if he would accept it. Something... she just prayed it wasn't one of the first two or both.

"Really? This is really happening?" Khairi couldn't pull the grin from his face. It was stuck there, forever. He threw his head back and let out a laugh. A father! Him! It was so amazing... their love would make way for new life in this world.

"A father..." Khairi's gaze settled back on his love, and his grin faded. She looked nervous and upset and... maybe she didn't really want children? Maybe she wasn't ready for foals. His heart sank. If she didn't want them... well, he could raise them on his own once they were old enough to be away from her.

But they needed a mother. And he -knew- Death would make a wonderful mother, a perfect one! Khairi nuzzled her. "Are you alright? ... I'm... I'm sorry if this wasn't what you wanted."

What would he do? All he wanted now was a family - one he could raise together with Death to the best of his ability. If that wasn't what she wanted, and if he'd done this to her... he didn't think he could bear it. She was so small! What if she couldn't handle the stress? What if it hurt her, what if... he couldn't finish the thought.

"I... " What could he say? What could he do?

The laughter... wasn't expected at all. In fact it lifted her heart a bit to hear it come from him. Only to let it plummet once more at his words.

"NO!" the ghostly-ness of her voice dissapated as her fear for his words filled her huge heart. "No Khairi of course it's what I wanted I just... I didn't know if you.... if you wanted them."

Her voice got quieter and quieter until the end of the statement where her her head was hanging and her wings slumped so he could see the huge bulge in her once tiny belly. Her thin back was so broad that her small human companion could have sat on her and her legs would have almost been completely straight out.

One of her ebony hooves scuffed at the grass beneath it and she let a strained smile spread over her white muzzle.

"I was so scared that you... might not want this just yet... I didn't know if you would yell or get scared or..." Her voice choked and cut off as her eyes shimmered slightly at him, full of tears for her own idiocy. "I didn't want our foals to not have a father... if you didn't want them, or if you didn't want ME because I had them."

At that she looked away.

His words seemed to stick in his throat, caught and held by something he couldn't force them past. She thought -he- didn't want them? His heart ached at the thought of the pain she must have endured, waiting for him to find out! No wonder he hadn't seen her around recently...

"Oh, little ghost ..." Khairi's voice was hoarse. "No, I... this is more than I could have ever wanted, more than I ever dreamed of having!"

How could he explain? He'd always wanted a family to raise, sons and daughters to teach and watch grow. Grandchildren, calm evenings with his love, spending a lifetime - and afterwards, and eternity - together. There was nothing more in this life. All he wanted was a family and peace.

"I am as responsible for this as you are, after all." A smile flitted across his pale muzzle. "I couldn't abandon you -" he paused, glancing at her round stomach, " - or them, anymore than I could abandon my own conscious. You're stuck with me, love."

Such a beautiful, sad, lovely, wonderful day! So full of life and love. He only wished he'd known earlier!
