Large hooves clumped slowly over the hard ground as the tall stallion grazed under the near perfect circle of the moon above. The grass had been poorer since leaving the valley of D'ob but better than it had been some weeks ago. Winter, it seemed, was lessening its hold on the land at last.

Lucius raised his great head to gaze into the night sky. Some days of travel south of here his son was probably wandering the beach under this same moon, perfecting his flying perhaps.

The black-coated Aeri smiled faintly to himself; Vox was probably near fully grown by now and he couldn't wait to see the younger creature again. Introducing him to Lydia would be interesting, too. He was sure the green Nequus would get on with his slightly strange companion.

Still smiling to himself, the bone-clad Nequus bent his neck and set about cropping the grass once more.

One last flap of his butterfly looking wings and slowly the stallion known as Morpheus decended to the ground for a drink of water. The tricolored stallion had no family, or friends. Maybe it was because of his coloring, or that he didn't go away from his home that much. Whatever the reason though, he had no friends and was starting to feel lonely.

A small sigh escaped from the stallion as he looked around to see if there were any other horses that he could probably befriend. Alas, he saw nothing but many trees and the small river that he had visited many times over his life.

Bending his head down, he took a long, slow sip of the cool refreshing water. When he lifted his head back up, he decided to go for a little walk. How this stallion wanted a family to call his own, or at least a friend that he could talk to. A small snort made Morpheus snap back to reality where he had nothing but himself.

The curly-maned Nequus paused in his grazing and lifted his head, ears pricked up alertly. He was sure he'd heard a noise away and to the left, by the stream he'd drunk from earlier that night. It was certainly worth investigating; if it was Lydia he wanted to be sure she was alright and if it was a stranger he wanted to be sure they weren't a threat.

Snorting faintly to himself, the powerfully built stallion set off towards the small body of water, his orange eyes flicking about in the hopes of locating the maker of the noise.

It wasn't long before he spotted movement and came to a halt to better observe it. 'It' was a bae stallion and, though his colours were hard to make out by moonlight, Lucius thought that he could make out purples and reds.

Well, the fellow certainly didn't look like a threat but it was best to check all the same.

The orange-brown marked being set off towards the smaller equine and announced himself with a snort. "Greetings," he said, stopping an unthreatening distance from the other stallion.

As he continued to look around for someone to befriend, he quickly heard a voice of what seemed to be another stallion. Quickly, Morpheus came to a hault and turned to look at this other stallion. With the moon shining on this other stallion, Morpheus could make out that he was a redish brown coloring. The black of the other stallion combined with the darkness made Morpheus have to squint to see the other.

The smaller stallion made a note of the bones on the other stallion's face and back. Why he had them, Morpheus didn't know. Not wanting to seem like a coward, the small stallion puffed himself up and lightly bowed his head in greeting to the other.

A small flick of his head made his red and purple forelock fall behind his ear, so he could get a better look at this stallion. What was this other stallion doing? The tricolored smaller stallion asked himself as he raised his head.

"Good evening," he said his kind voice soothing. Maybe, just mabye, Morpheus could make this stallion a friend.

The black-bodied Nequus nodded in response to the other stallion's greeting. "Indeed, a very good evening.” Weel it was, beautiful for one and another day’s travel closer to the coast for another. “My name is Lucius. Is this patch of land yours? If so I assure you that I do not intend to linger overlong in it."

If it was the Bae's territory he didn't seem to be overly possessive of it, which was good. The orange-eyed stallion was in no mood for a fight that could potentially harm him and slow his travels. He'd been away for quite long enough anyway; Vox was probably beginning to wonder where he'd got to.

As the other stallion spoke, Morpheus's ears swiveled around listening intently. Thinking about the patch of land he shrugged. "I guess, I usually live here, if that's what you mean." The tricolored stallion said looking at the large stallion's bones on his body. "My name is Morpheus." The Bae said with a slight nod.

Twitching his tail a little from side to side, the stallion sighed with relief that this larger stallion wasn't here to pick on him as some others did. "What brings you here?" He asked a little curious of why this other stallion was alone.

The broad stallion nodded his head as the other male spoke his name. "A pleasure to meet you, Morpheus. In answer to your question, I am heading south to the coast," the curly-maned stallion went on. "This was this most direct route from D'ob, so my companion and I took it. I hope that our presence is not a trouble."

In general, he didn't like it when his presence caused trouble. Trouble often turned out to be time consuming and messy; not exactly what he was after most of the time. Still, from that little sigh he had picked up before the Bae had asked him about his business hadn't been an aggressive noise and that was promising.

"The pleasures all mine." Morpheus said with a small smile on his face as he continued. "No, you are no trouble at all." He said looking around the area that they were in.

Closing his eyes, the stallion lifted his head up some and sniffed at the air that was fresh and cool. Morpheus too hated violence when it was unneccisary. When it was his life, or someone he knew's life, he would fight.

The tall Aeri smiled at the other stallion's words. He seemed like a nice fellow and people who didn't treat strangers in their territory with anger and violence were always a pleasant surprise even though they seemed to make up the majority of the population. It was always the memories bad ones that stuck with you, though. Lucius frowned thoughtfully for a moment, wondering why that was and filing the train of thought away for later consideration.

"Are you alone here, Morpheus, or are there others that I ought to keep an eye out for?" the orange-eyed Nequus quizzed.

Looking around the land that the other stallion thought was Morpheus's, the tricolored stallion let out a faint smile. He didn't know any other nequus, but the meeting of this stallion, who seemed very friendly, made Morpheus wnat to meet others. When he looked back at the other stallion, he twisted his ears towards him to listen to his question.

With a small shake of his head from side to side Morpheus answered him, "No, I am the only one around here you should have to be worried about."

Lucius nodded his head and looked about at his surroundings. He hadn't seen any of the signs of a heavily populated area during his grazing. "It's a nice place to live I imagine," he commented with a slight smile behind his bone mask. "The grass is still good here despite the frost and the harsh winter that is passing now."

Perhaps that was really due to a particularly nice location, or perhaps it was due to the population of one and the resultant lack of over-grazing. Still, either way there was no harm in complimenting the Bae on his home. Looking the brightly coloured stallion over, Lucius wondered privately whether his valued his solitude or if he was lonely here all by himself. He certainly didn’t seem in a great hurry to end the conversation and have his visitor leave.

Morpheous nodded his head slowly then looked around the place that he lived. The stallion was right, this place was much better than where he used to live, in a huge herd until his father had chased him off to make a herd of his own. So far, he hadn't done a good job of that. Turning his attention back to the other stallion, Morpheous smiled.

"Yes, it is nice here," the stallion said using his hoof to paw at the ground softly. "The grass is very nice, it also tastes good." Morpheous nodded his head again, then looked at the other stallion's eyes between the bone mask that covered his face. It was true, the stallion did not at all like being alone. The stallion wanted to make his father proud and have a herd of his own one day.

Lucius watched the Bae's eyes roam about his home. No matter how long one stayed in a place, the Aeri had found, there were always new bits of it to see, or bits you'd forgotten. Maybe that's what the brightly coloured stallion was seeing right now.

"...I must admit," the orange-eyed stallion said after a moment, "I'm somewhat surprised that you are alone here. I can't see anything that would put people off the area though I suppose it's a little more out of the way than D'ob. ...Tell me, do you like it? Being by yourself I mean. If you wandered around a little I'm sure you could find Nequus who are seeking a permanent place to live if you were after company."

The big Nequus smiled slightly behind the red skull. "Forgive me if I'm being presumptuous but having only recently stopped being a loner myself... Well, I must say I'm happier having people I can call friend and visit at times. I understand not all Nequus are the same but... well yes, that's all I suppose. I don't enjoy being by myself all the time and I wondered if you did, just out of interest I suppose and to offer a soloution if you didn't like it."

Well, he'd used quite a lot of words to get to the root of his point but at least he'd got there in the end. He was getting better at applying the thoughts that floated so clearly about in his sharp mind or real words and actions but it was still something of an effort at times.

The tricolored stallion smiled at the place he called home. Everything seemed so quiet and lonely. When he heard the other stallion's voice again, Morpheous quickly turned his attention to him.

"Yes, it does get quite lonely at times. I guess I could walk around, but I'm not that good at talking to other nequus, since I dont talk to them that often." He admitted to the stallion. Since he hadn't talked to another nequus in what seemed like forever, he decided to talk to this stallion.

Hearing the other stallion's soft voice and kind words made Morpheous think a bit about going out and finding himself a few nequus to call friends. "I think I shall take your advise." He said nodding to Lucius. Looking at the stallion's orange eyes behind the skull mask, Morpheous sort of expected the stallion to be mean.

Morpheous imagined walking out to where others could find him. What would they say about his colorful coat? Would they taunt him?

It was good when folk took your advice, especially when you yourself thought it was rather good advice. Lucius smiled at the brightly coloured Bae and gave a soft snort. "Well you seem to be doing alright at talking to me," he commented with a nod. "Most Nequus are decent enough to speak with, especially if they stand to gain by being nice. As I've said, this is a good patch of land you've got here. Get one or two loners interested and I've a feeling you might end up with a fair sized group in a few seasons."

He himself couldn't imagine stopping in one place forever to manage a herd of any size. The idea didn’t especially appeal to his nature in the first place and the story of Pyrus had forever stayed with him. Just because folk pretended loyalty and that they liked your ideas didn't make it so.

"All I'll say," the blank orange-eyed stallion went on after a moment, "is to watch out for the ambitious ones. There's some who'd think that the place would be all the nicer were it theirs. It might be wise to have a few Nequus you come to trust... keep their eyes open for mutterings should you end up with her herd here."

Thinking on it, he really ought to be moving along soon. It had been pleasant to talk to this stallion but he still had to get to the ocean and to Vox. Well, lingering a little longer wouldn't hurt; he just had to be sure not to get too caught up in the conversation. He could ramble for hours if left to his own devices.
