For my University application I'm required to provide prior work in Journalism, but since my small town does not have a student internship program with the local newspaper, and the high school I go to doesn't have a newspaper, I sadly have none. I contacted the recruitment officer and she told me to write a mock article. After much debate, I have decided to write an article compairing the Party in '1984' to the Syrian government. Does anyone think that it is a bad/good topic? I'll probably post it once I've finished writing it.

Well-researched, I think that should be a fine topic for an essay. Make sure to present arguments with evidence from different viewpoints. Having resource materials from a variety of countries would certainly be helpful in this respect, I think.
