Sometimes if you check around the pet shops, they do sell used tanks for a cheap or reasonable price.

I would be nervous of purchasing a large tank online, unless you are sure you are able to return it if you find it has anything wrong with it.

I've never bought anything like that online, so I wouldn't be able to suggest a place to you.

Before you buy something online, have a look in the paper for anyone selling their aquarium. Then you might be able to actually go see the person selling it and get a good look at the tank before you decide to purchase it. You should be able to tell if it is sturdy enough. (And you might even find a pretty nice deal, too.)

A lot of the time I see people selling tank, equipment, fish and all! A few years ago found a dirt cheap one around 70gals, but you had to take their massive Oscar along with you if you bought it.

Guah.. I should have just bought the damned thing, cause I've been lusting after a pair of Oscars lately. /regret ._.

they don't sell fishtanks over 30g though (if that) the only place i've found is aquabid.com you usualy have to pick up a fish tank you buy on there but they have a TON of choices, like i saw a local fishstores entire tank setup for sale on there once. You can also buy fish on there which is pretty safe as long as the people have good ratings and whatnot.

Also aquabid is pretty much like ebay but some people don't put pictures of their tanks up =/ but alot of ppl will tell you if there's something wrong with the tank and will have a picture of any scratches or other faults

Try craigslist.com or feecycle.org also check your local newspapers, animal shelter and shops and see if they know anyone getting rid of an aquarium. We landed a 135 gallon fish tank with stand, filters, heaters, decoration, python, scrubbers, airpumps, and more for $100.00! the only drawback is that it came with a tankbuster fish. But we loved her the moment we saw her. A Lovely African Black Belt Cichlid.
