Name: Zayn Age: Ieldi equivalent of 23 Race: Ieldi, Flame Bowerbird Class: Rogue (Thief) Occupation: Wandering Artisan Current Home: Wherever the road takes him, though he does own the inn Phoenix Rest in a pocket realm of Sabilasi, accessible from the top of Durem Tower. Eyes: Bright red, edged in black markings due to his Flame Bowerbird heritage as an Ieldi. Hair: Bright red and casually messy. It is long in the front than it is at the back, though even then his bangs only reach around chin level. Interesting Features: Two large wings rise from his back, mainly red, but tipped in gold and black. Small feathers expand from his wings to cover his shoulders and the area around the wings themselves with a downy-like substance. The same effect takes place around his tail, though to a slightly lesser degree. The down gives way to dark gold skin, which fades into black at his hands and feet. His bones are hollow, meaning he can easily glide with his wings, though not actually fly. Clothing: Zayn wears sturdy clothing fit for travel and all manner of art. He prefers tunics or shirts, worn over long pants. He tends to favour drab colours such as brown when travelling - anything else stains too easily. Splotches of paint and art materials can often be found on his clothes. He always carries at least one bag and a pouch or two, which always include a sketchbook and some pencils. Zayn isn't much of a flyer, so when he is at home, he is mostly found in robes. He has two main sets of clothes - work/art clothes and social clothes. His social clothes are generally bright and festive, in colours designed to set off his red-and-gold plumage. As an artist, he ensures that nothing clashes or looks garish. His work clothes are more simple in cut and are made from rougher fabrics in subdued colours. Zayn is well aware of how messy his art can be and several tongue-lashings from his mother at a young age impressed on him the need to wear less expensive clothes when painting or sculpting. Zayn's home clothing tends to be almost toga-like, though sometimes with loose pants on underneath and shorter togas, and sometimes just the long robes themselves. When painting, he will often go without a shirt and just wear pants, or wear a loose mid-length toga to allow for movement when rushing back and forth between his art materials. Likes: Art, travelling, beautiful things. Dislikes: Heights, cities, Deities of Chaos, certain rules of society (such as "thou shalt not steal") Strengths: Creative, caring, determined Weaknesses: Absent-minded, prone to panicking/worrying, physically weak General Persona: He is rather solitary if left to himself - a bit absentminded, able to get caught up in his work and forget he should be eating, cleaning, going outside and meeting others. He's not shy by nature but is a bit reticent until you get onto a subject he feels passionately about. If he decides he wants something, he'll do just about anything to get it. He'd be very demonstrative when courting, or trying to sway people to his point of view. He can be very messy at times, leaving his art supplies lying around his house and forgetting to clean paint off his hands or face before it dries. He's the kind of person who makes you think someone really ought to be looking after him. He loves beautiful things, especially creating them or capturing them in an artistic manner (although he can sometimes also have light-fingered tendencies ^^;; ) Zayn's sense of beauty is more attuned to his art and nature, more than any sort of material wealth or possessions. His kleptomania seems more an inborn instinct than any true desire for the objects themselves. Weaponry: Carries a dagger or two for protection when travelling, but isn't the warrior-sort, so he won't use anything larger than that.

A long time ago in another world there lived a race of beings known as the Ieldi. They were a humble people, quite content to live in harmony with nature, never really concerning themselves with what lay outside their forests. The Ieldi were an avian race, born with the ability to fly, and thus their most treasured thing was their freedom. Their arboreal cities were vast and beautiful, often spanning for miles, but never coming close to the ground, which the Ieldi feared greatly...
Part I: The Sleeping Beast and the Birth of Oluine There was an old legend that told about a great beast that slept underneath the soil. It mattered not that other creatures, such as the kyunru, lived on the ground. It was the Ieldi that this creature wanted. According to this legend, it was an Ieldi priest that trapped the evil thing deep underneath the earth, to stop it from eating the children. Because this was before the race had grown wings, and they were quite vulnerable to predators. In this early time, the Ieldi were much like humans.
However, before the beast was sealed away completely, it said to the priest: "You will regret this deed. As each new birth takes it's first step upon the earth, I shall devour it's body set it's soul to the ether." With that, the creature fell into a slumber deep underground.
The priest, desperate, went immediately to the gods, telling them what happened and begging them to help his people. And so the gods said to the priest: "Fear not, for with each new birth, your people shall gain the sky, forsaking the ground and it's hidden danger. But, harken, before the next child arrives, you must all leave the ground. You must never touch it again, or our blessing will not save you from the beast that has cursed you so."
So with that, the priest returned to his home with the bittersweet news. His people welcomed him, making him a hero for ridding them of the terrible beast that had hunted them for so long. They wasted no time in moving their cities into the trees. For word of the priest's valor and its cost had spread across the land. It was difficult for them at first, being so used to living on the ground. But it took five months for the entire Ieldi populace to migrate to their new homes.
It took six months for the next Ieldi infant to be born. And indeed, the child was born with feathered wings. It was smaller and lighter than normal, and was named Oluine, their word for 'Free'.
And as the gods promised, all children born were winged, and it was not long before the entire Ieldi race took to the skies.
Part II: The Beast Awakens A long and prosperous time followed. The Ieldi remained very shy and reclusive, too afraid to leave their forests. For even though they could fly, and had grown graceful and swift, they could not endure long periods of flight. So it was made that no one was to set foot outside of the forests. It was too dangerous. In the trees there was little chance for someone to fall to the ground, and only the Hunters lived below the undernets that prevented young Ieldi from falling whilst they learned to fly. It was just too dangerous for an Ieldi to venture out of the forest, and risk getting tired and not having a tree to rest on...
But of course.. it was bound to happen. It is untold who finally set foot upon the ground. Some say it was a child who fell while trying to sneak past the undernets to see the Hunters at work. Others say it was an Ieldi scientist born long after the Turning, who didn't believe the old legends and wanted to prove they were false. There are even other tales that it was a lone Ieldi, who left the forest in search of adventure, only to tire in mid-flight and fall to his death...
Regardless of who did it. It happened, and it took only moments. The ground opened and the beast was freed. It set upon its prey with the fury of a thousand years of smouldering hate. Their bodies fell away as the spirits were pulled from them, stuck between this world and the next. In the blink of an eye, the beast devoured all of their bodies and was forced back underground. The cities lay empty, nothing but the Ieldi had been touched.
Part III: To Live Again The spirits of the people hovered invisibly in the air for a long time, not realizing what happened, too confused to do anything but be. Slowly there came a consciousness to them again, and they began to wander. It didn't take long after that for the first of them to contact the gods, who were mildly perplexed about their disappearance.
The kindest of the gods came to them with a smile and a gift. It was a small, delicately carved statue. She said to them that she would grant them life again through these statues and a very special ritual. So it was that slowly, with the patience of this gentle goddess, that the Ieldi were brought back into the world.
But this time of rebirth was short-lived. There came an intrusion into their world. A group of highly powerful wizards opened a Gate that bridged into the world of the Ieldi, sending the natural balance into chaos. The Wizards were not around for long, one of their own having angered the very goddess who had helped nurture the Ieldi. The once gentle goddess became death incarnate and slew many of the intruders.
As the remaining wizards retreated and began to close the Gate.. the disturbance in energies caused a sort of magical black hole effect, sucking the entire populace of spirit Ieldi through the Gate and into Gaia.
They were trapped. In this world, there wasn't enough magic to support a continuous corporeal manifestation. They could barely be seen or heard, most often they were feared as evil ghosts when they showed themselves to people. And here... away from their gods... there was no way to summon the spirits into a body. So they were stuck...

In his original life in Sabilasi, Zayn was a young adult living in a rather small village. He was no longer viewed as a child, but was not seen as being responsible enough to have been an adult or elder either. Although he had a family - parents and a younger sister, Zayn moved out on his own in order to have his own space for his artworks. As the village artisan, he made necessities such as plates, bowls, vases, etc. but above all he loved to make sculptures and paintings - his 'true' art in which he could capture true beauty and express his creativity. He kept mostly to himself when in a creative mood, not leaving his house and often forgetting to eat, consumed with his work. He loved beauty in all forms, but especially those of nature and various art forms (painting, sculpture, poetry, dancing). He tended to focus on the painting and sculpting for himself, but liked to watch of listen to the others. Although not the most social of creatures, he was still rather well-known in his small village. On the rare occasions he attend social gatherings, he was content to observe the happenings around him, unless discussions turned to art or subjects he felt passionately about. At these times, he lit up and became very animated as he spoke - he could be quite the charmer, when he put his mind to it (but that wasn't often). He also had small tendencies to "borrow'" items that didn't belong to him, but it happened rarely and he tended to undercharge for his services as an artisan, so most people let it slide. When pressed, he would return the items and mend his ways for a time but he always seemed to slip back into this bad habit as easily as he continued his art. Preferring his own village, he still managed to travel several times in his life. Most of the time, he was convinced to travel with or by his family, who used the argument that he should see what forms of art were present in other villages or cities. Needless to say, after his visits to other places that he had no particular ties to, people would notice several bright or sparkling objects had gone missing... Zayn's family eventually caught on and stopped inviting him to travel with them. Zayn was happy with his life, even if his family wished they could change certain things about him. Although a late bloomer, Zayn eventually realised he wanted someone else in his life. He was in the process of courting a lovely songstress when disaster struck and the Beast was released.

Kali: Zayn's mother, who spent months luring and reassuring Zayn's spirit form before he agreed to be reborn into Gaia. An amateur bird watcher from an early age, Kali leapt at the chance to attract and raise an Ieldi. She was also an amateur artist, so her use of artistic materials as a lure resulted in attracting an artistic spirit like Zayn. She was a traveller, saying she wanted to see the world while she was young. It is likely Zayn inherited his wandering nature from all the traveling they did while he was young, as he certainly wasn't the type to travel in his previous life. What she hadn't revealed to her son until it was too late was that Kali had leukemia. Her adventurous spirit wouldn't allow her to waste away in hospital, so she was spending her last years traversing the world instead. She lived to see Zayn grown to a young adult, before finally succumbing in her sleep one night at Phoenix Rest Inn. She was buried next to the inn, and over the years Zayn made a small grove as a memorial around her burial site. Chronos: (originally played by Youkochilde, presently played by Sosiqui)It was thanks to this member of the Kyendi Pantheon that Kali and Zayn's relic made it out of the tree alive when Valesti attacked. Even within his relic, Zayn could sense to presence of one of his gods. Chronos' reassurances that the ground was safe meant a lot, added with Kali's. Without Chronos, it is doubtful as to whether Kali alone could have convinced Zayn that ground was a safe thing. So not only was Chronos the first other Kyendi being that Zayn encountered, Chronos also had an important impact on his life and development. If the first Tree had not been destroyed, and the Kyendi all fleeing to different ends of the world, it is likely that Zayn would have taken Chronos as his patron god. Odilen: (played by Sosiqui)This graceful dancer and storyteller was one of the first Ieldi to be reborn into Gaia. Unlike Zayn, she was born before the first Tree was destroyed by Neruheru, and so had reason to enjoy life among the branches and retain the Ieldi's inborn fear of the ground. Odilen and Zayn met as children, when Zayn was only newborn, but were then taken separate ways by their respective mothers. Zayn met Odilen once again when both were caught up during a quest for the Crystals of Gaia. They spent much time together in a tiny inn/tavern that the Elysian action seemed centered around. They even attained mooching moogles at the same time. Odilen is the kindest, prettiest person Zayn knows. The fact that both are Kin means he is automatically at ease around her. As fellow artisans and wanderers, they formed close bonds and travelled together for a time. Despite eventually parting ways, they still meet when both visit the pocket-realm of Sabilasi on top of Durem Tower. Zayn always looks forward to meeting Odilen again, for reasons he has yet to admit to himself... Imriel: (played by Paperghost)The first of the Ieldi to be reborn, Imriel has led a solitary life. Her mother, La Karasu, died when she was young, and although Karasu's ghost remained, Paperghost had lost her memories of her daughter, leaving Imriel by herself. It is only recently that Zayn has met Imriel once more, after he and Odilen discovered that Imriel was butchering the souls of the Kin into making Pala. Zayn's worry dissolved after learning Imriel was simply trying to create more Ieldi to ease her loneliness. His heart goes out to the solitary Ieldi. Even if she can be stubborn, sulky and standoff-ish, Zayn believes that the six existing Ieldi should be there for one another. He's resolved to keep in close contact with Imriel.

Despite his love of wandering, Zayn does actually have a house! Not in a city, of course, he prefers living closer to nature... And closer to his home world. This portion of Sabilasi exists as a pocket dimension, reachable from a special portal on top of Durem's clock tower. Although Zayn was given a house up in the Great Tree, the events of his rebirth left him with a fear of trees that most Ieldi reserve for a fear of the ground. Many years ago, Zayn's guardian traded the house with Quinny to instead live in the inn, Phoenix Rest. The third floor has been transformed into Zayn's private rooms and art studio. There are spare rooms left on the second floor, potentially for visitors, although Zayn prefers his solitude most of the time. .
