A Girl Like MeThe above is a film about African-American girls in today's society. It's fairly short at about 7 minutes long. It was featured on Youtube which is why and where I found it. I really like this film because it strikes close to home on how I've been feeling about the media and its effect on people with African heritages. I want to hear other people's ideas about it here and not the rude comments so common on Youtube.
[Edit] The film is by Kira Davis.[/Edit]

*watches video*
Wow. So sad, and yet, still true, what they said about black females and society.
It's still surprising when you hear people say it, though. *Edit* I was surprised at what the kids said, not at the fact they picked the white doll over the black one.
One other thing. That one girl's aunt (the one that lives in Honduras).......that woman's got issues. Getting her kids skin bleaching cream? WTH? She's causing her kids just as much mental damage as the rest of the world. It's bad when the world doesn't like your skin because it's too dark (according to them), but to have your own mother think your skin is hideous? That's just messed up. stare

That was really sad, especially about the the thing with the dolls. The little girl, when asked which doll was bad, and which one looked like her was very disheartening. People say that "race doesn't matter" and "race doesn't exist." Has biologically true as that may be, how can you ignore race when you have 4 year olds pretty much telling you they're ugly and socially unacceptable. That's why it's so important to instill a sense of pride in our children.

I agree with what Cominatcha! wrote. A lot of it is our fault. Not all of it, but a good amount.

Pretty Leaf I agree with what Cominatcha! wrote. A lot of it is our fault. Not all of it, but a good amount. And alot of people have self-hate issues and don't even know it. If you ask them why they see Eurocentric features and things as better, they can't even give you a real answer because they've been so brainwashed they don't even see it as a problem.

I agree with Cominatcha (whatta name o_O). We do have a lot of self hatred among us. We have people like Al Sharpton that wants to blame all of the white people for our problems but what he fails to realize that a lot of our problems are caused by us. (I personally blame the media -rap music- but that's another issue)
I've known SO many black people will self-hatred issues. When you try to tell them about it, they don't want to hear it. I've lost many a friend that way and I've learned to just not bring it up. I mean, you can tell a person to change their heart. They have to do it them selves.
My first experience with black people who have self hatred issues was with a girl who liked Korean stuff. A group of us used to hang out and talk about anime, manga, and boys. :3 One day I was sitting by myself with one girl from the group. She started telling me about how she hated the ghetto people at our school then she told me she hated black people, and being black. It really offended me even though she didn't see me in the same "league" as the "rest of them."
Next experience was a couple of people actually. I had a best friend who was light skinned. Her mother and her other friend who were dark skinned always made comments about me being dark and they'd always complain about how she had it "lucky" because she was light-skinned.
After that was a guy in my HS who had a thing for Asians. To him, nothing could compare to an Asian. He always made comments about me being dark skinned. He wanted to compare each other's skin tones (he was slightly lighter than me) and he even told me that I would be hot if I were an Asian. Once he even called me an Asian. When I told him that I didn't appreciate being called an Asian, he told me, "You should be happy. I said you were Asian. It's a compliment." That even offended my friend who was Asian because she knew what kind of person he was. Besides that he has other issues too so I'm glad we don't talk anymore. talk2hand
The current person I'm dealing with isn't really that bad compared to the others I've dealt with. I think he hates himself more because he doesn't have the body type he thinks all women desire. But I do get the feeling that he doesn't like his skin color. Once he had he feel his hair because he was growing it long. I told him that I liked it because it was very similar to mine. We talked about it some more and we both agreed that we didn't think black guys should perm their hair. (Personally, I prefer guys to keep their hair natural) Awhile later, (I think someone might have said something to him) he permed it and then because he doesn't know how to take care of a perm, he eventually had to have it cut. When he told me this, I told him, "Oh that's great, you can get your afro back again." He told me, "Hell no! I like having something I can comb through." Even though I can understand where he's coming from, I thought he was perfectly fine with his natural hair. I feel that he's trying too hard to be like his best friend (he's half PR/Italian) because apparently his friend gets all of the girls. rolleyes

This is so horrible. You have little kids that are already saying something is bad because its black, its the 19+20th century all over again.
People like to say race doesnt exist, but in reality it does. Scientifically no, but when you look at who the cops shoot, who gets jobs, who appears on tv, what most people want to identify with and etc. then you know that race exists.
This isnt a problem just in the U.S either, this bullshi!t is all over the caribbean , south america, and Africa and surprisingly Asia.
Indians are known for their skin lightening creams, and the japanese were the first to make skin lightening pills. Africans and blacks/Asians are the largest consumers of these products.
Its sad, deeply sorrowful, what a ******** world we live in huh.

Whoa, I wish that would've been longer; I'd have liked to see what else they had to say.
I can't say anything on the matter -- I sometimes think that it'd have been nicer to be white. I agree that it's the media's fault more than anything. Most cartoons have the main characters as white. Even anime has pretty much all white characters despite the setting taking place in Japan, so it's no wonder kids are bred thinking that European is better.
But, nearly every black person knows the problem exists. If anyone ever says 'I've never wanted to be white', they're lying.
