Has anyone but me read any George Orwell books?? I have read Animal Farm, and am working on 1984. He is the BEST!

Orwell is okay. He is not my favorite. It has been many years since I have read 1984...I will not reveal how many. I just finished studying Animal Farm. It is interesting when taken from an historical perspective. We compared to the Russian Revolution. That was interesting. As a stand alone novel it is not as great as others. I do like the allegory. I enjoyed the way he used the pigs as the human characters. dramallama

George Orwell is by far one of my favorite writers. His essays are magnificent.

1984 is one of my favourite works of literature.

Probably the most regular, as well.

He is incredible! In fact, for Valentine's day, my boyfriend bought me a hardback edition of Animal Farm and 1984 together. It's awesome.

If you enjoy Orwell, I recommend Kurt Vonnegut's "Player Piano", as well.

1984 is ok but I've read better distopian novels. Brave New World, We, Anthem...

I must agree with your thought on Orwell, and I'm glad that other people are reading 1984. It is a vital book for this day and age. Sure Orwell got the year wrong, but maybe I'm wrong and all that has happened can be traced back to Mcarthery in the '50's I think...It was in that administration that ended privacy.

I just finished "1984," and I read "Animal Farm" in my history class last year; they were both really good. I think I was the only one who enjoyed "Animal Farm," everyone else complained about it. It makes a really good analogy for the failure of Soviet communism. 3nodding

Mm, Anthem doesn't even compare with "Atlas Shrugged", and "The Fountainhead". Being the little Ayn Rand nerd I am, I had to sneak that in there.

"1984" never really caught my interest (Though I did read it all the way through), and I still need to get a copy of "Animal Farm", I've sadly only seen the oldschool movie.

I have a much battered and beloved copy of 1984 that I've read close to ten times in the past six months. I read Brave New World right before it, too, which made a good contrast still keeping with the same theme.

I'm going to try Brave New World next. The idea of distopia books is interesting to play with. I've read... quite a few!

Agreed. Really great book! I never got into many of his other books, but I really enjoyed Player Piano. I really liked 1984, too--I liked it better than Brave New World, honestly. Hooray for a good dystopia!

Yes, it is interesting to compare the two. Brave New World was definitely far more...radical. sweatdrop But I loved it nonetheless.

As for Vonnegut, I'm currently reading God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater , which is also a really good satire.
