Vale wandered without true direction through the tall grass, mindful of her footing. The sun sat low in the late afternoon sky, casting a warm glow across the valley. Coming to a slow stop, she lifted her head into the wind, baring her neck to the cool breeze that curled her mane about her cheek.
It was quiet. Perhaps too quiet after so long with her melodious friend. No doubt he was up to mischief. Her lips curved into a knowing smile.

Maverick walked through the tall grass but paused at the sight of beauty. The figure of a mare, her hair blowing in the wind as the sun began to set from behind her. It was not that unusual of a sight to see, but something about the mare caught his eye. Maverick slowly approached the mare and smiled, she was indeed natural, a true beauty. He began to approach her with a greater speed and smiled as he got closer. "Hello there," he said proudly.

Vale's left ear flicked towards the sound of hooves and she turned just in time to come face to face with a tall, dusky colored stallion. She stiffened in surprise at the unexpected and unfamiliar face, before catching his greeting and welcoming smile.
"Hello," she returned, taking in the stripped pattern of his coat and copper eyes. Another zebra? But no.. the pattern wasn't quite right. Her brow arched curiously and she spared a quick glance to either side to check for others.
"How can I help you?" She asked, politely.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't help but notice you across the field, you are just so...," said Maverick, taking a pause. He wasn't the type that was flirtatious by any means, so he wasn't quite sure if he had the confidence to tell her the truth. "Well, you were so beautiful that i had to meet you." Maverick gave a smile to her, hoping that he wasn't blushing, although he felt that he was. As Maverick examined the mare a bit more, he noticed very faint stripes on her, stripes similar to Maverick's father, a zebra. Hopefully this mare was not a relative! "This may seem really weird of a question but...are you related to any zebras by any chance?" asked Maverick.

She paused for a minute, unsure of how to reply, but the faint hint of a blush across the stallion's face put her at ease. His openness reminded her of Demyx. "Thankyou..." Her previously diminished smile brightened. It's not every day you get such a genuine compliment from a fine looking stallion.
Vale was pulled out of her musings by his sudden question. "Well yes," she nodded slightly. "I am a zebra, though my coloring may mislead you. I see you have similar markings?"
She shook her head absently. "My name is Vale. What's yours?"

"My name is Maverick," said Maverick, delighted to hear that she is a zebra, but worried that she may be a relative nonetheless. Although, it wouldn't be the worst thing having a relative, Maverick would find it awkward to think that a relative of his is beautiful and attracted his attention in the way it did. "I am a zorse, half-zebra, half-horse," said Maverick with a smile. "You are not related to a zebra by the name of Tholynak by any chance, are you?" Maverick gave a hopeful smile to the mare.

Interesting, she thought to herself. That certainly explained the curious pattern of his coat.
"No..." she paused for a minute to think. "I don't think I know any zebra by that name. A friend of yours?" Vale turned her head towards the now purple-pink haze in the western sky that heralded the setting in of night.
It was getting late.
"Do you live nearby? I'm not familar with the area, I admit."

"No, he's my father," said Maverick, seeming ashamed. Maverick did not really have fond feeling for his father, always leaving him and his mother alone to tend to his own business. It wasn't till years later that Maverick learned the truth; that his father had a secret family out in the savanah, a bit further beyond the desert. "Yes, I do live nearby, I live in the woods, a rather quiet resting place. I don't really settle in anyone place in the woods, I like to wander a bit until I find the perfect home."

Vale's brow arched at the curious tone of Maverick's voice.
"Well," she purposefully lightened her voice. "Will you show me your woods? I travel quite a lot, myself..." Her thoughts turned to her previous charges. "A few good friends of mine were not very good at sitting still."
She side-stepped in the general direction she remembered him appearing from. "Unless there was something else you needed to do?"
Vale turned fully then, and started a slow walk towards the trees. A little presumptuous perhaps, but with those two... Assertion was always a necessity. And besides, if allowed, she would enjoy the company.

"Sure thing," said Maverick with a smile. He turned a bit, nudging his head to direct Vale's attention and indicate her to follow. Maverick began to walk over down to the woods, it wasn't going to be a far walk at all.
"I wasn't really going anywhere specific," explained Maverick. "More of just...wandering around. Looking for something to do, someone to talk to. Then I met you, so I guess I found just who I was looking for."
Maverick turned to Vale with a smile.

She picked her head up and followed him, a half-step quicker in her stride to make up for his greater height.
"I suppose so," she nodded her head. Cute. "We have a lot in common." "Someday I hope to find a place that I will not leave even if I am able. Raise a family... Perhaps join one. It's not in our blood to always be alone, I think." She wondered whether it was appropriate to mention families to new acquaintances, but shrugged it off. It was was the truth and (courtesy for new friends aside) there was a familiarity for her in talking with another of her striped kin.

"I haven't thought to much of having a family of my own, probably because I haven't really found someone to start a family with, or at least know well enough to make that decision," said Maverick with a broad grin. "It's not that I don't want a family, I certainly do, I just think that a companion, a mate, for instance, should be the first step in starting the family."
Maverick noticed the words coming out of his mouth strangely. They were how he felt, yet, things he never thought he'd really mention on the first time meeting someone, especially to a mare. And more especially to a mare as beautiful as this one, one who would normally make Maverick act strangely and embarassed. Perhaps Maverick was feeling strange and embarassed and thus admitting all his secrets.

Vale smiled and nodded. "You will have to excuse me. Families come in all shapes and sizes, blood kin or otherwise. I am overused to the company of many."
Were she to think about it, that would be another notch towards her ease in talking to Maverick. He had been, not more than a few moments ago, a complete stranger. In a large group, there is always a new face to meet... therefore openness is familiar instead of confusing.
The previously discontinuous spattering of trees started to thicken and the edge of a forest began to fill her view. The wind died down in the less open space and Vale's nose twitched at the woody scent.

"I'm not used to the company of many at all," said Maverick. "In fact, I spend most of my time by myself. I just get uncomfortable in certain social situations, mainly in larger groups with involving those who I don't know. I can handle one on one situations and situations with other Soquili I feel safe with."
Maverick thought for a moment, there actually weren't many that he was close with. Orah, Kimi, Diallo, Zahariah...those were perhaps the only Soquili that Maverick felt comfortable with. Well, and Vale, but he had only just met her.
"So, tell me a bit about your family," suggested Maverick.

"Ah," Vale canted her head to the left, musing. "There is Demyx, my water spirit. He's very young. Has a little wolf friend. Complete mischief, the two of them." Her smile softened. "They've both gone looking for Sephiroth. He's... Well... He's very serious. Demyx followed him home to me in the first place, which makes it no surprise that he's gone after him now. There's a bond there that I don't suppose I understand. But, if Sephiroth..." And she was careful not to lapse into silly nicknames, despite his lack of attendance. " ...hasn't killed him yet, perhaps it's all well and good."
