Do you think that, an otherwise well written fanfic, is ruined when it has some quite obvious spelling and/or grammatical errors? Say for example, a fanfic that has a good plot, good characterization, flows well and is just generally awesome can be ruined by those errors, or can you overlook it?

Whenever I notice a typo I just breeze over it, but if there are too many in one book then I start dissecting Haribos.

Well... I must admit, if I find a spelling mistake, I will always find myself drawn to it every time I read the article or paragraph, etc. However, I don't start murdering sweets... that's just cruel!! crying

If a fic is done very well I can overlook grammar problems. I do critique them harshly, if such is an option. But I have never found a fic that is done very well and has lots of grammar problems; most writers understand and want to follow the rules when they mature enough to write well.

Usually I can stand misspellings and the like. The only thing that will make me stop reading (besides bad plot) is no puctuation and leaving the story one giant paragraph. There is an enter button for a reason!

I often over look them when the fic is good. Most really good fan fic writers are more likely to take time in writing though, rather than just write something to quickly post.
Quality over quantity.

I have always believed that if the person who writes the fanfic is illiterate, a giant mosquito will come down from Mars and kick their a**. But, if the fanfic is decent in the ideals of a plot, I am confident our mosquito friend will pay mercy on the poor, poor illiterate author...
But yes, to a certain extent bad grammar can totally maim and murder a plot and turn the author into mosquito food!

Well, yes, horrible, horrible grammar and spelling add an air of unsophistication about the fanfiction, like someone wrote it in three minutes, but I'm willing to overlook small to medium errors as long as the plot is half-decent.

I'm okay with a few grammar and spelling mistakes. We all make them. But when I start to see them completely invading the entire story (which usually has a bad, generic plot to it) I start to hate the author and stop reading. But if the plot sucks too, I won't read it anymore. The second I see horrible grammar all over a page, I run away as if avoiding the plague.

I once read a fanfic with horrible spelling and incorrect tenses all over the place. I actually corrected it as I went along, I couldn't stand it! It was a good story but the errors did ruin the experience for me.
Here are some of the errors:
"I can't believed it!" Cid exclaimed with at top of his voice.
Cid couldn’t believe his ears. But come to think about it makes perfect sense.
In the inn, there was a girl sitting at the counter. A girl filled with grace and style with long black hair flowing freely down her back. The way she occasionally stroked her hair backwards made her extremely attractive. If there was perfect beauty in this world, she will be the one that will come first.
She was thinking how would it feels being called as Mrs. Strife, having kids and all sorts of things.
Ugh...it's just bad...

I couldn't read the bad grammar at first, until I started looking for minor ones. Whenever some of my friends who are illiterate try to getme to read their fanfics, I tell them that I'm busy posting in several other guilds. Then I just say it's good in a post. whee

I can overlook some spelling and grammar errors, as spelling is one of my weak points. If the story in otherwise well written, the overall experience is not ruined by the mistakes. In my experiences, however, well written stories generally have few mistakes, while the ones with plot lines that are... lacking, for want of a better word, are the ones with many mistakes.

It can be hard to spot your own mistakes, no matter how many times you read something through. Generally one or two won’t bother me unless they’re something a spellchecker really would have picked up (that just shows they aren’t smart enough to run it through one, or don’t care enough.) If it is obvious the problem is stupidity rather than anything else and there a great deal I would most likely stop reading.

&heartsWhen I see mistakes like that I just try to pass over them, but when there are to many, even if the story is good, I start to get annoyed. It just catches my eye to much and takes away from the total awesomeness of the story, no? &hearts
