Bill C-38 has been passed by the House of Commons, and now just has to go through the Senate. The Senate rarely rejects anything the House of Commons passes, the last one was in 1991, for legalizing abortion or something surprised

Nonetheless I am so happy right now, I'll be happier once it actually gets legalized. Making Canada to be the 3rd country in the world to legallize Same Sex Marriage 3nodding After two years or so of debating and threats.. IT IS DONE =D!!! Bwah bwah bwah!! This is why I voted for the NDPs(last election), because they'd end up voting with the Liberals, I wasn't so ready to vote for the Liberals because of the financial scandal.

Aye it may be taking a long time but it is inevitable for Canada's future. It would be a greater surprise for us not to legalize it.

It was in Dose this morning comparing the last couple of years to a play-by-play of a sumo wrestling match, complete with water colour illustrations of the match with one of the players in a rainbow mawashi (the belts they wear in the match). Go pick one up while you can! (Canada only. PST and GST are negligible. Americans may cross the border in search of it, but know that I'll likely scan it in the next few days.)

This is the first time it's reached the final third reading. Senate might not let it pass since the only thing they are really barred from not being able to stop legislation on is bills regarding government funds, and instituting marriage on a federal level has very little to do with money, since, by changing the definition, implications on existing tax legistlation, and other rights and responsibilities involved will be minimal. I wouldn't be surprised if moderate-leaning Liberal Senators took the chance to lay a new claim to fame for their declining political careers, by breaking party lines. Just because he's won over the Commons, the House of [Not-So] Sober Thought might not be inclined to stick to what their successors have said on the matter.

Not that I've heard of, though I don't know exactly what the filibuster rule is.

We do have that pesky appended part of the Constitution, that allows regions to opt out from federal programs using the "Notwithstanding clause" which Alberta is still threatening, though it's almost over and done with. Plus the invocation of it has to be renewed every five year, so it's pretty bothersome and time consuming. Most Conservatives are giving up while they still have a shred of dignity.

Filibuster basically allows every representative to speak his or her piece of the matter on a bill. Since the House(?) only has a set amount of time to deal with everything that is proposed, representatives would "talk a bill to death". Meaning, they'd debate about everything the bill could do positively or negatively, and then run out of time, forcing the bill to go through the system next year. Thus, a name was made for it: The filibuster.

I was wondering if Canada has this, because if they did, it's be much like the US' stand on Abortion. Talked to death on every bill, so none passed and everything stayed as is.

If Canada has something like the Filibuster, I'd assume that is what would happen with Gay marriage. Frequently debated, nothing done about it.

I see something happening about it soon. I hope they don't do the Notwithstanding Clause with this issue. That would be lame. You live in Alberta don't you Keithing? I like in Nova Scotia. I think we're a pretty gay province. xd

... Or not. Spain just went through with it, so Canada would be 4th, now.

Two what? I'm in Massachusetts. The one state out of 50 where any two consenting adults can tie the knot wink

Like I said, it's only going on to third reading. Personally, I don't care what number we are on the list, as long as it goes through soon. Shouldn't that be what matters most?

Just one more reason why I wish I was in Canada instead of America.
