Setting: The village. Early morning.

Alan (100%, generally resembling a grey anthromorphic donkey)

With his mane properly clipped, coat scrubbed, and freshly pressed clothing, Alan looked and felt like a million bucks. Today, he was on a special mission--to get a convert or two to the Church of Moreau.

Alan sighed happily, scanning the duplexes. So many duplexes...so little time. Smiling with his large teeth, he walked to the nearest door and knocked with his semi-hooved hands. He clenched a black leather book in the other arm.

(Ryan, 75% Mostly Anthropomorphic, his tail and snout haven't grown all the way, and his fur isn't completely grown in.)

Ryan had been sleeping soundly in the remains of his mattress; he'd long ago clawed the center of it into tiny peices of fluff, which made sleeping with his ridged back easier. The lights were off, and the windows covered with dark cloth. The whole room felt like a cave; like a burrow.

Grumbling at the knock, he stood up, brushing peices of his mattress out of his fur. Reaching over to his nightstand, he tied the towel that passed for pants these day around his waist. "I'm coming!" He yelled at the knocking.

He opened the door about a foot, wincing as the bright light hit his eyes. He coulddn't see well enough to get a good look at whoever was knocking. "Can I help you?" His tone was as friendly as it could be, considering he'd just woken up. Bits of mattress were still stuck to his fur.

Alan continued to smile as the door opened, revealing the armadillo within. Dressed in a towel, pieces of mattress sticking to him...Alan's mind automatically went to the worst. This man had been WITH someone, not long ago. He would need a lot of saving.

"Hello, friend!" he said, his smile faltering slightly. "Do you mind if I come in and talk to you? I'll only take a few minutes." He pushed himself in the doorframe, making it much harder to get pushed out.

Had he been more awake, he might have been inclined to just push the guy out of his doorway and slam the door. But he'd been out late digging around in the jungle for tasty bugs and roots, and he'd only gotten to bed not too long ago.

So, for lack of better judgment, he invited the guy in. It wasn't as though he was worried about the guy stealing his stuff or anything. "Eh, sure, make yourself at home."He turned and waved the guy in. "I'm just going to get a glass of water, you want one?"

Remembering that his guest probably couldn't see as well in the dark as he could, he flipped the light on, despite how it stung his eyes. He quickly walked into the bathroom to get out of the bright light and fill a glass will water.

With the light on, Alan would be able to see that a couple walls had tally marks gouged into the drywall. Quite a few in; in fact, more than three hundred.

Alan entered the duplex eagerly, clutching his leatherbound book. Even though he had been devoutly faithful on the mainland, it was his first mission and the donkey had been nervous. It was a lot easier than he initially thought.

When the lights flickered on, however, his eagerness quickly disapated. The clawmarks on the wall...was it some sort of marking. Alan thought back to his college days--he knew what these young man thought of, and what these marks probably represented. Dear God, this man needed help.

"Oh, sure...I'll take some water." Alan leered at the supposedly promiscuous armadillo.

"So...how has the island been to you?" he asked innocently.

"Alright." Ryan filled up a couple of the glasses, which he kept in his duplex since he could drink from the faucet anymore. He strolled back into the main room, handing Alan a glass. "Don't worry, they're clean. I was them after I use them."

He sat down on the unshredded edge of the mattress, careful to move his tail out of the way. "It's definitly had it's ups and downs. I'm happy to say that being an Armadillo has been an up. I have been here long enough to get that many tally marks though." Ryan of course was refering to how many days he'd been there.

Now that his eyes had started to adjust to the light, Ryan got a good look at the animal he'd invited in. He seemed to be a donkey, the poor b*****d. "Now then, Mr...? What can I do for you?"

"Thank you," Alan said, taking the glass from the young man. He wasn't really that thirsty; the donkeyman just wanted to really be polite. Essentially, he was the representative of what he was trying to sell and being polite was just one of the small things that gave him credibility.

Having a personal interest was another. Alan listened politely as the armadillo talked, nodding at the appropriate places. It was only when the young man indicated the marks on the wall that Alan's fascade of politeness dropped into pure shock. Enough time? Enough time for that many? He was lucky to have come here first; this was truly a lost soul.

The only words out of Alan's mouth, however, was a simple, "That many, huh?"

He shook his large head. Truly a lost soul.

"Oh, you can call me Alan," he said gregariously, trying to move on. "I'm glad to see that things have been going well for you. So many islanders fail to see the good that the doctor has done for them." The donkey nodded sagely.

"No problem." It really wasn't a problem, It wasn't like Ryan was paying for it or anything.

"Yeah, that many so far. Who knows how many it will be in the end. Of course, there are others here that have a lot more than me, though I don't know if they keep track like I do." Alan himself was in that category, though Ryan didn't bring it up; it could be a touchy subject. Although this guy seemed to be in a good mood.

"I've met some great animals here. Some of the best friends I've ever had, actually. My only complaint is that I can't really bend my back any more, and it's awkward in bed at night. Maybe once I change for the last time it'll be better."

"Oh geez, I'm sorry, I didn't introduce myself. Name's Ryan." He held out a hand that seemed to be more claw than fingers. "Coming here probably saved me from a lifetime of foodstamps. I can certainly understand why the others are upset though.

"There are others that have more?" Alan asked, surprised. These islanders...no wonder Moreau was turning them into animals! They were beasts! Alan's tail, skillfully combed and cleaned, twitched anxiously on the bed. He had a lot of work ahead of him.

At least the armadillo was on starting on the right path. "Yes, our little community here...its very much a paradise, and so much more than anything I've ever encountered back in the United States." Alan turned his head, focusing his large left eye on the armadillo. "You see, Ryan, I too was in trouble back on the mainland. I was in a bad place...and now, I'm not afraid to say that I was a bad person."

Alan nodded again, remembering the many times he had yelled at his assistants, family, total strangers...even now, the thought of his grating human voice made him ashamed.

"But here...I lost that. These changes, in addition to benefiting mankind, has helped me overcome those bad times." His voice was very serious.

Alright, now Ryan was a little confused. Why would this guy be surprised that people had been here longer than him? "Um, yeah. There's a lot of people that have been here longer than me. You have been too, I take it, since you've changed all the way, haven't you?

"Well, I'm glad that things have worked out well for you. That seems to be the exception and not the rule these days."

Ryan wasn't sure what he was getting at now. Was he trying to get Ryan to support the labs? While Ryan wasn't a supporter, he wasn't exactly a voice of dissent around the island.

Alan was shocked by the young man's lewd behaviour. Kids weren't like this in his day! "Well, son, that's the problem. For whatever reason, our culture pressures us to be no better than a common rodent."

He, of course, did not see the insult he could have just dealt the armadillo. "And I may have been here longer than you, but that doesn't mean I have more notches on my belt. You see, this island doesn't HAVE to be like anywhere else on Earth."

Alan smiled, trying to look friendly. He was doing well, even though it was his first stop. Hopefully, the rest of the islanders would be just as receptive. "I've heard several of the islanders are of the moan-and-groan variety nowadays. But there are a few others that actually get it. Have you heard of Zachary, or Jordan?"
PostPosted: Sun Feb 04, 2007 10:05 pm

Ryan started laughing at the absurdity of Alan's statement. Just a quiet laugh that would wouldn't go away for the longest time. "I'm..haha..sorry." He managed to get out once he calmed down a bit. "It's just that I know a couple animals here who are rodents, for whatever reason." He had to wipe away a tear that had formed from laughing so much.

At least Ryan finally seemed to catch on that Alan had mistaken his tally marks for something else. What he thought they were for, he had no idea. "But if you've been here longer than me, then that's exactly what you have." He jerked a clawed thumb towards the tally marks. "That's how many day's I've been here.

"I've heard of Zachary a few times, usually after he's gotten into a fight with someone. Haven't heard of Jordan though."

By this point, Ryan had been nice and polite and had engaged in small talk. Now though, he was just wanting to get back to his nice shredded bed. "What did you say you came here for? I don't rember what you said."

Alan cocked his head, confused. The laughter, the tally marks...what was wrong with this young man? It had been going so well; now is where salemanship mattered.

When Ryan explained the tally marks on the wall, he nodded his head, ears folding back against his head. Of course! The armadillo had been trying to keep track of how long he had been here; how stupid could Alan be? Mentally, he lashed himself in the back. Way to look stupid, stupid!

"I'm sorry," Alan said, embarrassed. "I...thought they were something else." Stupid stupid stupid! Quickly, he tried to change the subject and was glad when Ryan did it himself.

"Ah yes!" He smiled nervously. "Well, that's what I was coming to talk about. A few of us, Zachary and Jordan and some others, have decided that we need to thank the labs for all they've done for us. We're having a meeting tomorrow night to figure out what we can do for Moreau as a thank you."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 04, 2007 10:38 pm

"Hmmm." Ryan thought about what Alan had asked for a minute. So the guy WAS with the labs, or at least for them. Himself, he wasn't for them or against them. Amd he certainly didn't want to choose a side; that would alienate him from some of his other friends.

"I can't say I'd want to go that far. At the moment, I figure I'm giving back to Moreau already; he experiments on me, I don't ask for much and I do my best not to cause or get into trouble."

"Ah yes, it does seem like we do a lot for him, doesn't it?" Alan asked, as if expected. This is one of the answer he had been coached for. "But think about it: he could just as well keep us all in cages. He gives us all these luxuries, our own rooms and free roam of most of the island."

He nodded again. It was strange how much wiser he looked now, as a donkey. "And think of all the bull he has to put up with! All these ungrateful islanders, complaining all the time and not giving any credit where it is due."

He leaned in close. "All we want to do is give some thanks. Maybe somehow give something back."
