Hop, hop, hop.

The snow white rabbit twitched her whiskers as she hopped along – not a care in the world. The rabbit appeared to be fairly young, probably not even a year old. The dew sparkled on the forest floor as she slowly made her way to… wherever she was going. The sun’s rays were shyly peeking over the horizon, and the rabbit seemed to feel quite secure.

What she didn’t know was that she wasn’t alone. Crouched down, behind a tree or two, was a young wolf who thought she looked just tasty enough for a meal. The wolf’s pelt was colored in patches of navy blue and gray, causing him to be slightly camouflaged. He tried his hardest to tread very quietly on the wet morning grass. Alexander, though young, was turning out to be a fine hunter. He had to learn early to feed himself or his life would have been in even greater peril than it had been already.

He stepped slowly; scruffy blue paw followed by scruffy gray paw. Finally, Alexander decided he was close enough and crouched even lower, preparing for the pounce.

What the young puppy going after that rabbit couldn't know, and most certainly didn't know, was that a certain blue wolf had spotted that very rabbit. She had utmost intentions of going to retrieve it for play, have a racing match, or simply roll around in the snow as she tried to unearth its burrow.

That's when her eyes had spotted the black, blue, and cremey colored wolf slowly lowering himself to the ground. Pavati had only been taught hunting by Kara, and that had been minor things. For the most part she'd refrained from killing anything, and always thanked Thinks Like Fire for every meal they now had. Mother probably thought it was rather strange. It was the only time that Pavati used Kara's name and it became the name of the river and the spirits of the world. Because that was what Pavati was, the keeper of Kara's spirit. The spirit of the river, and she would tell anyone and everyone of this fact.

So of course, the small blue figure crouched there shoved a series of worried thoughts into the bright blue puppies mind, and she had long began an attack on this bundle of dark fur.

She released a blood-churning cry and launched herself at the blue wolf to keep him from the unspeakable act he was about to commit, screaming, "NO! DON'T DO IT!" as she slammed headon into his side.

Without giving it a hundredth of a second’s thought, the rabbit bolted off through the forest, startled by the bright blue wolf’s cry. The white meal was long gone before Alexander even got a chance to blink. But, unfortunately for him, he couldn’t even chase her down because he was being attacked by another puppy! Giving a surprised yip, Alexander’s body shook, and would have toppled at the sheer surprise of it all if he hadn’t been so near to the ground already.

Quickly, the blue male hopped up onto his toes, ears and tail up, and spun a circle to face his attacker. His hackles rose slightly before he realized it was just a young, female pup. This realization smoothed his features, but he was still annoyed at losing his breakfast.

“What was that for?” Alexander demanded, exhibiting his familiar alpha pose. If the pup was after the rabbit, then why did she pounce on him? Why not the prey? What was wrong with this girl’s head?

Pavati had ended up sprawled all over the earth, wrapped in happy puffs of snow. She paused to lick them and feel the wonderful tingle on her tongue before turning her head up and over her back to gaze at the blue one upsidedown.

She grinned, obviously oblivious to any intention of breakfast he may have had. Her features quickly changed to serious, however, as she distinctly remembered the act that he was about to commit.

"You were going to kill my playmate!" she told him, thankful the rabbit had scurried off somewhere to safety. Besides, they were no where near any rivers at which to thank Kara, and that was certainly not something that Pavati would let him do.

"Do you know what happens to people who don't love the river!?" she demanded of him, spinning onto her feet and looking him in the eye.

That’s it. This girl was crazy. Completely insane. And that was that. At least, that’s how it went in Alexander’s mind. He stared at her in disbelief for a for moments, letting the breeze absentmindedly ruffle his scruffy puppy fur. This was just rude, Alexander thought. Plain rude to interrupt someone’s breakfast. Tasty, filling, rabbit… breakfast. He felt his mouth begin to water and knew he had to get to the bottom of this outrage.

Alexander remained outwardly calm, but didn’t show any signs of content. He cocked his head to one side at the female odd behavior and odder words. “The river?” He repeated quietly. They were nowhere near the river! The blue male snorted in confusion. He dipped his nose slightly, looking her in the eyes. “Yes I was going to kill it. I’m hungry.” He said simply. “Why did you ruin it?”

Pavati stared at him wide-eyed. He truly didn't know? It seemed no one actually knew of this truth that she simply had to fill everyone in on. It should have been common knowledge.

"Kara watches over us. We pay our respects to things when we kill to keep ourself alive, and she smiles upon us." She nodded sagely and slunk a little bit closer to whisper into his ear. "But when we do not show our love and gratitude, she becomes angry, and eventually we will all die and her river will reclaim us." Pavati wasn't exactly sure what this meant, but she knew to keep the peace with everything around her so that she may be granted safety in the river with Thinks Like Fire.

"Club should know this," she told him, and thus gave him his new name.

Other than that, it was good luck getting much out of Pavati. She tended to be overly quiet unless talking about things that interested her, or setting wrongs to rights. It was her duty in the world, and like mother always told her, someday she would be the greatest shaman ever.

What Kiros failed to fill her in on was that only those with special inner powers could become thus, no matter how great their heart, and so she went on believing.

Alexander didn’t move. He barely even managed to think, trying to process all this “nonsense” was hard work. In his whole life (which isn’t much) the pup had never heard anything like this before. Now, Alexander wasn’t the kind of wolf who just thought he was right all the time. He could appreciate others’ viewpoints and even accept them as his own, but this one was a little… out there.

“Did you fall on your head?” Alexander asked bluntly. He was usually very polite, but unfortunately Pavati had both caught him at a bad time and ruined his mood. He was hungry, and annoyed about being so close to such a tasty meal. On top of that, it was morning again. Alexander was definitely a creature of the night, being much more comfortable in the dark. He flicked his ears around casually, hoping to hear signs of some more prey in the vicinity.

Pavati watched him for a moment. He seemed to be very thick skulled and unable to hold the true masterpiece that was life. That was okay, most could not understand it, so it was up to her to hold the beliefs and traditions. She would teach it to her own children, and they would all know of Kara to the end of their days. There would be no death if the memories lived on.

She shook her head at Club, her head now occupied with other thoughts. She watched him carefully, studying the patterns of his fur. He was a lot like her in a way. A subtle blend of lighter and darker shades, then vibrant patches. She, however, was far more blended and her poiniant marks were far more pronounced.

But she had no semblence of the color which adorned his coat. It was all a black and white to her eyes. All wolves were forever the same.

Alexander cocked his head to the side curiously. There was definitely something different about this girl, but he couldn’t put his paw on what it was exactly. Her bright colors were attractive to him, seeming to shimmer in the early morning sunlight. He started walking absentmindedly around her, sniffing lightly to get to know the girl behind the crazy ideas.

Suddenly, Alexander wondered if his own sister had been like this girl. He had been too young to really get to know her before she died. The blue male’s ears twitched, still listening for any sounds that would replace his breakfast. His mood calmed while he thought about his family and Alexander decided to give this girl another chance.

“What’s your name?” He asked, trying to make a fresh start.

It was not a good question to ask Pavati in any case scenario. Mostly for the fact that she'd tell you, quite simply, she was Blue Wolf, because she was blue. But in this case, there was something rather strange about this other. A small secret desire to please him, and she knew just what he wanted.

Her real name.

She never gave it out to anyone, not because she was afraid, but she knew Blue Wolf fit her far better. She was of course, so people told her, a blue wolf, and every animal should be named after what they looked, not what their mother's perceived of them.

"Pavati," she told him, watching him carefully. She would much rather have him call her Blue Wolf, so she hinted at it. "And I'm blue, Club."

She didn't ask for a name in return, they already had a name. "If you want, we can find you another breakfast, and I can show you the ways of the river?" It was at least curteous to ask.

Alexander could see the concentration on her face, and he wondered what she was thinking about. He waited patiently for the bright blue’s name, and was finally rewarded with it. Pavati. Strange. However, what came after it was even stranger. She was blue? Well, of course she was; he had eyes…

Ignoring the name she called him, even though he didn’t understand, Alexander casually replied, “So am I, Pavati.” Her next statement was also strange and confusing. The ways of the river? Alexander couldn’t help but slant his head again in curiosity. He figured if he was going to someday have his own pack (which was an aspiration of his) he should learn as much as he could about other wolves.

“Okay,” he agreed. As a follow-up statement, Alexander added, “But you might have to be patient with me. I don’t know how fast I’ll learn.” He wasn’t a slow learner by any means, but this river stuff was weird.

Of course he was blue, but more than anything he was a club. For he was perhaps the most muscular puppy she'd ever seen (him being the first one other than her brother), and most certainly the most violent. For she was sure he had intented to club that rabbit. It, as a fact, had nothing to do with the strange marking by his eye, for she had no idea what it symbolized, except perhaps a tree. Except for there were no oaks in her pathway of life, and she saw them from very far down, and didn't make a connection.

But that didn't change his name from Club. Pavati found him rather amusing. At least he wished to learn, unlike most of the adults, who'd rather call her a crazy puppy full of dreams, and then move on with their busy lives of fretting. Life should be simple. Things were born, things died and once more lived with the river. If you were good to the river, good things would happen to you. If you were not, then the river would take your soul and throw it to nowhere and you wouldn't get a second chance.

Mostly, Pavati knew as much as she loved the river, the waters would never take her life as they had Kara's, and in return the river would grant her powers to heal, she was sure of it.

Little did she know of the dream she was living.

"Pavati has never taught anyone before," she told him carefully. It wasn't as though it was any big secret, but no one wanted to learn. "So I shan't be the best teacher in the world." Never the less, she strode forwards, her nose stuck to the ground, searching for that familiar roar of the river that made up her lifetime.

It took her some time to realize there was no river in any place for miles, that she should probably be getting back home, and any lesson she'd teach Alexander would have to be through words. She sighed and settled down onto her haunches to think about just where to begin.

"The river is far, but I'm afraid I'll teach you wrong anywhere else. It won't be breakfast, but more like dinner for Club."

Alexander silently cursed himself for straying so far away from the river. He always remembered where it was, though. A wolf should never forget where the river is, or he will be in big trouble. At least, that’s what Alexander thought. Having to travel a great distance for water was a burden on anyone, strong or small. However, so many wolves hunted by the banks that prey were sometimes scarce. Hence, Alexander was forced to stray from his comfort to feed himself.

The blue pup yawned wide, sticking his tongue out and giving his head a quick shake afterwards. Following the yawn, Alexander gently shook out the rest of his coat in preparation for some lengthy traveling. “That’s fine,” he began, both replying to her novice teaching and the distance of the river. “I’m not completely starving,” he added. “…yet.” He gave the smaller female another glance and added as an afterthought, “You talk weird.”

Pavati gave him a strange look.

"I talk normal," and that was that. She broke into a trot and started ahead of him, towards the river she knew so well.

- - - - - -

She hadn't talked to him the whole time, her head was focused on the dirt, and everything else around her. She had to make sure she kept counts on every scent, twig, cloud in the sky. If she broke her concentration, that was it, she'd lose her way. That meant the way back home, and the way to the river. But she'd done it, been okay, and now the water rushed dangerously close, the roar filling her ears with age old tales of those less fortunate than she.

She stared at it for a time, feeling its mist and pure power ruffle her fur. It felt foreign, with another wolf here, and a sudden fear gripped her throat, as though she couldn't teach this one right, and he certainly wouldn't understand in the way she had. Still, she had to try, the adults surely didn't get anything.

"You ever seen someone drown in a river, Club?" she asked him suddenly, her eyes never wandering from the danger so close to her feet.

“I talk normal.”

Those were last words exchanged for a long time. Though Alexander disagreed slightly, he would not say this to his companion. Pavati seemed to live in her own little world, and Alexander didn’t want to be the one to ‘burst her bubble’. His puppy mind hadn’t had any chances to dwell on fantasies – something he sorely missed. Having to fend for yourself day after day took its toll on a wolf pup before long. For Alexander, the loneliness claimed his childhood instead of his life.

The blue pup paced along ever-so-slightly behind Pavati. She was leading the way, but he wasn’t about to trail far behind like a lowly omega wolf. Alexander kept his nose even with her neck for the entire journey. He may not have been right next to her, but he was close enough. Alexander allowed himself to sniff the ground and the air along with the female, becoming familiar with the path they took.

Silence was no stranger to this pup, but he was thankful when it ended. Though, the words that shattered the silence were as cold as the rushing waters before them. Alexander turned his gaze to Pavati and offered his answer. It was a simple, yet strong, “No.”
