Does anyone use Japanese Step by Step by Gene Nishi?
PostPosted: Sat Jan 27, 2007 9:06 am

E-V-I-L! domokun JK, but I don't like it. She's confusing and uses too much roumaji.

Gene Nishi is a girl? sweatdrop I didn't know that. I'm sorry sad

It is useful, but like Hermione said, uses too much roumaji. If it used more kana/kanji it would be better. It does, however teach intonation.

If she had taught EVERY particle, kanji, conjunction, verb usage/endings, and all the other stuff, th ebook would be really thick but be incredibaly helpful!

I don't know. When I don't know the gender of an author I choose one and use it until I find out otherwise. sweatdrop

I'm using Elementary Japanese by Tuttle Publishing. My boyfriend whom has studied Japanese for four years says it's quite a good book to use.
Check it out, I enjoy it... the only problem I have with it is that it's more of a classroom environment friendly book; it consistently has you read grammar sections of the book (dialogue cartoons) with new vocabulary without telling you EXACTLY which particles are which and which words are your new vocabulary words.
Only a teacher who had studied more Japanese, while reading it out would tell you what particles and new vocabulary words are being used.
I find myself ocassionally flipping back and forth between the cartoons trying to find which parts are the new vocab words and trying to remember how the particles work....

It's REALLY not easy to study by yourself! crying

I guess I'm just flipping through the sections of the book too quickly and not really trying to make myself remember how particles are being used and remembering important vocabulary words. You might find the book easier to use if you're much more dedicated than me! *laughs* XD

If my boyfriend would study more with me instead of being so.... bored with the newbie Japanese stuff, I'd probably learn quicker *laughs*.

I really, really liked Tuttle Publishing's practice kanji workbooks.. I looked at them and they're really newbie friendly because they give you the strokes and the boxes to practice them in.... Rather than quite a few kanji books that I've seen that give you a vague idea of the stroke order and barely any space to practice. >_> I really wish I was able to buy them when I had the chance!!!! gonk crying I'll probably buy them the next time I visit my Japanese book store in Seattle... ;_; I just hope I can afford them the next time I go! v_v;;;

Anything from Kadansha publishing and Genki and Youkoso.

No tuttle publishing!!! They tend to be wrong!

Also, there's a list somewhere...

rofl The book I bought doesn't even use ANY romanji, the whole book is in hirigana and katakana and finally kanji when you start learning it!
You might be talking about a REALLY old edition of it, I bought the 2005 edition of it.
My boyfriend has looked at it and doesn't find any mistakes and he has learned Japanese for 4 years! ^_^b
Anyways, I still think it's worth checking out.

Elementary Japanese!

*Cursing*, I should of bought the books on Amazon.com omg...... it's SO much cheaper online!!! *ripping out hair* scream

Depends on what you're talking about. Kanji cards sure, but their 250 Essential Kanji uses kana and kanji. No roumaji at all except when they introduced Katakana and Hiragana.

I use them and they are good. I've learned lots and the thread on kanji I made is based from what I learned from them. Words from my dictionary tend to be correct as do the readings typed up on my computer.
