Okay, at the beginning of 2006 there were several sites with tabs that we could all easily use... and most of them have been pretty much decimated all because "IT'S COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!!! *WHINE* BUY THE TABS BECAUSE YOU'RE STEALING OUR MUSIC!!!" by some record labels or something. Don't remember who, but as far as I know, ultimate-guitar's still the only one standing...
Is it really copyright infringement to tab out a song that's merely an interpetation of a song written out BY EAR? If we write down something to show a friend how to play a certain song, is it copyright infringement? No matter how great or talented a guitar player is, the way all guitar players learn is learning from other guitar players. I'm sure even Hendrix learned some stuff from other guitar players he met and played with. Tabs is just one way we communicate and helps us a lot easier. Indeed: "At what point does describing how one plays a song on guitar become an issue of copyright infringment? This website [and tablatures], among other things, helps users teach eachother how they play guitar parts for many different songs. This is the way music teachers have behaved since the first music was ever created. The difference here is that the information is shared by way of a new technology: the Internet..." - from guitartabs.cc
What do you guys think?

So, they ban guitar tabs. I've always learned songs by listening to songs... So does that mean they are going to ban me from listening to the music? IS THAT COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT?

Van91 So, they ban guitar tabs. I've always learned songs by listening to songs... So does that mean they are going to ban me from listening to the music? IS THAT COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT? They didn't say anything like that, not that I'm siding with them. Just sharing your instrument tabs with others is "wrong", which is ridiculous.

I tend to do it by ear, but sometimes tab can be a big help.
I don't see why sharing it is such a big deal, I mean I show friends thing's I've figured out. Am I infringing the copyright laws?

Technically, it is copyright infringement. The songs are the intellectual property of the musician.
I don't give a damn, though. Were I as loaded as those musicians, I'd publish my tablature ON Powertab Editor to make it more easily accessable. It's not really the musician's fault, though. The record companies are trying to leech more money out of the songs that they publish.

I think that is totally lame as hell.
Tabs are a huge help. Espically if you cant figure something out.It gives you that little boost to get it done.
And yes...Tabs are done by ear. So is that really infringement? I mean techinally it is a person representaion of the music that is in question. Which would mean its the person own take on the music.
So technically to me that would be a completely diffrent song. Its like doing a cover tune. Its always changed and done diffrent but as close as possible. and its not like we are sharing music files, just text.

BlackestShadow Technically, it is copyright infringement. The songs are the intellectual property of the copyright holder. Changed for accuracy.
