do any of you actually drive an old (lmid 1900's) volkwagon bus? im getting my liscense soon and i really want one, but ive been having trouble convincing my dad. online, ive found sites where really good/working condish buses are being sold for a few thousand dollars, or broken ones for a few hundred dollars (that i could possibly fix...does anyone think thats crazy? my dad does, but im totally willing to learn mechanical stuff and spend hours on it) vintagebus.com is one of them....
but anywho pros and cons, would it be worth it, do they break down a lot b/c of their age...? id really appreciate some firsthand feedback.

Nope, I can't drive yet.. But my dad drives a 1973 Volkswagen Thing. Here's a picture, since many people don't know what it is. The white one is my dad's, and the orange is my grandad's.

Ooh, it's one of my goals to get a VW Bus. I know there is a blue one sitting in a storage compound in Pennsylvania. I stare at it every time my dad takes me home on sundays. Right now it's blue. I wonder if the owners would sell it to me if I offered a good amount.
For me, I would paint it any and all colours I could. Then, I would paint some Beatles lyrics, a couple of Incense and Peppermints lines, and probably a couple from the White Rabbit song. And as a final touch, I'd paint lots of strawberries all over the place. And pay for a personalised license plate to read "Ringo". I name stuff. n_n I'm an odd bird.
I d'unno much about this, but if you were to redo or restore it with possibly some help, it probably wouldn't break down much, but it might need to have an exact maintenence schedule, just to make sure it's okay. Again though, I'unno about upkeep for one or about restoring it. I'm only 16. crying And I live in New Jersey. gonk So I have to wait, and maybe look into seeing if that one in Pennsylvania is up for sale by the owner.
I wish you luck in getting one though, sprynqinox! mrgreen

Good idea to learn about mechanical doings if you plan to purchase an old VW camper van. If in good repair they can be reliable, but if you do some extensive touring, there's going to be times when it breaks down.
Some people try top get ahold of newer VW vans, like the Eurovan. IMHO, bad idea. A Eurovan is equipped with some shitty brakes, generally speaking. They've got a bad rep. Avoid!
Then again, some owners have no trouble at all with their Eurovans. It's a crap shoot, I guess.
Numerous resources exist for those with an interest in these vehicles. And, the subject of van maintenance/repair was always a topic under discussion around various hippy campfires and whatnot.

I'd really LIKE a vbus like that! I could run it on vegetable oil and i could paint it green or brown or both and travel around the Americas SPREDDIN THE LOVE! I would LOVE to live in a vbus like that.
I was actually thinking recently that I would try to buy an old school bus and fix it up. I'd paint it psychadelic colors, take out all of the seat (or most of them) and put in couches, a small fridge, blankets and stuff, then I could travel around picking up random hippies and take them anywhere they wanted to go. I'd have a veggie oil party bus! DAMN IT that would be SO COOL.

I had the good fortune to ride around in a fully restored and tricked-out VW bus when my more-mechanically inclined friend got his hands on one for $500. Those things can really haul if you fix em up and maintain them, it's really a tribute for anything that still works long after it was intended. They really built them to last. 3nodding He actually put a waterbed in there, it was not the most practical perhaps but how many people can say that they've rode around town lying on a waterbed.
